Of course, the "Modern Citadel" was not destroyed in the earthquake; not one person was injured there. It's too bad Mr. Rafsanjani couldn't be bothered to ensure such modern, rigorous building codes for the rest of Bam: Tens of thousands of died; one out of every two people in the city was killed in the quake. Sex Slave Jihad

Before the Islamist-Communist Counter-revolution:

A measure of Islamic fundamentalists’ success in controlling society is the depth and totality with which they suppress the freedom and rights of women. In Iran for 25 years, the ruling mullahs have enforced humiliating and sadistic rules and punishments on women and girls, enslaving them in a gender apartheid system of segregation, forced veiling, second-class status, lashing, and stoning to death.

Joining a global trend, the fundamentalists have added another way to dehumanize women and girls: buying and selling them for prostitution. Exact numbers of victims are impossible to obtain, but according to an official source in Tehran, there has been a 635 percent increase in the number of teenage girls in prostitution. The magnitude of this statistic conveys how rapidly this form of abuse has grown. In Tehran, there are an estimated 84,000 women and girls in prostitution, many of them are on the streets, others are in the 250 brothels that reportedly operate in the city. The trade is also international: thousands of Iranian women and girls have been sold into sexual slavery abroad.

The head of Iran’s Interpol bureau believes that the sex slave trade is one of the most profitable activities in Iran today. This criminal trade is not conducted outside the knowledge and participation of the ruling fundamentalists. Government officials themselves are involved in buying, selling, and sexually abusing women and girls.

Many of the girls come from impoverished rural areas. Drug addiction is epidemic throughout Iran, and some addicted parents sell their children to support their habits. High unemployment 28 percent for youth 15-29 years of age and 43 percent for women 15-20 years of age is a serious factor in driving restless youth to accept risky offers for work. Slave traders take advantage of any opportunity in which women and children are vulnerable. For example, following the recent earthquake in Bam, orphaned girls have been kidnapped and taken to a known slave market in Tehran where Iranian and foreign traders meet.

Popular destinations for victims of the slave trade are the Arab countries in the Persian Gulf. According to the head of the Tehran province judiciary, traffickers target girls between 13 and 17, although there are reports of some girls as young as 8 and 10, to send to Arab countries. One ring was discovered after an 18 year-old girl escaped from a basement where a group of girls were held before being sent to Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The number of Iranian women and girls who are deported from Persian Gulf countries indicates the magnitude of the trade. Upon their return to Iran, the Islamic fundamentalists blame the victims, and often physically punish and imprison them. The women are examined to determine if they have engaged in “immoral activity.” Based on the findings, officials can ban them from leaving the country again.

Police have uncovered a number of prostitution and slavery rings operating from Tehran that have sold girls to France, Britain, Turkey as well. One network based in Turkey bought smuggled Iranian women and girls, gave them fake passports, and transported them to European and Persian Gulf countries. In one case, a 16-year-old girl was smuggled to Turkey, and then sold to a 58-year-old European national for $20,000.

In the northeastern Iranian province of Khorasan, local police report that girls are being sold to Pakistani men as sex-slaves. The Pakistani men marry the girls, ranging in age from 12 to 20, and then sell them to brothels called “Kharabat” in Pakistan. One network was caught contacting poor families around Mashad and offering to marry girls. The girls were then taken through Afghanistan to Pakistan where they were sold to brothels.
In the southeastern border province of Sistan Baluchestan, thousands of Iranian girls reportedly have been sold to Afghani men. Their final destinations are unknown.

One factor contributing to the increase in prostitution and the sex slave trade is the number of teen girls who are running away from home. The girls are rebelling against fundamentalist imposed restrictions on their freedom, domestic abuse, and parental drug addictions. Unfortunately, in their flight to freedom, the girls find more abuse and exploitation. Ninety percent of girls who run away from home will end up in prostitution. As a result of runaways, in Tehran alone there are an estimated 25,000 street children, most of them girls. Pimps prey upon street children, runaways, and vulnerable high school girls in city parks. In one case, a woman was discovered selling Iranian girls to men in Persian Gulf countries; for four years, she had hunted down runaway girls and sold them. She even sold her own daughter for US$11,000.

Given the totalitarian rule in Iran, most organized activities are known to the authorities. The exposure of sex slave networks in Iran has shown that many mullahs and officials are involved in the sexual exploitation and trade of women and girls. Women report that in order to have a judge approve a divorce they have to have sex with him. Women who are arrested for prostitution say they must have sex with the arresting officer. There are reports of police locating young women for sex for the wealthy and powerful mullahs.

In cities, shelters have been set-up to provide assistance for runaways. Officials who run these shelters are often corrupt; they run prostitution rings using the girls from the shelter. For example in Karaj, the former head of a Revolutionary Tribunal and seven other senior officials were arrested in connection with a prostitution ring that used 12 to 18 year old girls from a shelter called the Center of Islamic Orientation.

Other instances of corruption abound. There was a judge in Karaj who was involved in a network that identified young girls to be sold abroad. And in Qom, the center for religious training in Iran, when a prostitution ring was broken up, some of the people arrested were from government agencies, including the Department of Justice.

The ruling fundamentalists have differing opinions on their official position on the sex trade: deny and hide it or recognize and accommodate it. In 2002, a BBC journalist was deported for taking photographs of prostitutes. Officials told her: “We are deporting you … because you have taken pictures of prostitutes. This is not a true reflection of life in our Islamic Republic. We don’t have prostitutes.” Yet, earlier the same year, officials of the Social Department of the Interior Ministry suggested legalizing prostitution as a way to manage it and control the spread of HIV. They proposed setting-up brothels, called “morality houses,” and using the traditional religious custom of temporary marriage, in which a couple can marry for a short period of time, even an hour, to facilitate prostitution. Islamic fundamentalists’ ideology and practices are adaptable when it comes to controlling and using women.

Some may think a thriving sex trade in a theocracy with clerics acting as pimps is a contradiction in a country founded and ruled by Islamic fundamentalists. In fact, this is not a contradiction. First, exploitation and repression of women are closely associated. Both exist where women, individually or collectively, are denied freedom and rights. Second, the Islamic fundamentalists in Iran are not simply conservative Muslims. Islamic fundamentalism is a political movement with a political ideology that considers women inherently inferior in intellectual and moral capacity. Fundamentalists hate women’s minds and bodies. Selling women and girls for prostitution is just the dehumanizing complement to forcing women and girls to cover their bodies and hair with the veil.

In a religious dictatorship like Iran, one cannot appeal to the rule of law for justice for women and girls. Women and girls have no guarantees of freedom and rights, and no expectation of respect or dignity from the Islamic fundamentalists. Only the end of the Iranian regime will free women and girls from all the forms of slavery they suffer.

By JENNIFER KAY, Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA - Dr. Christopher Born got the telephone call at 2 a.m. the Saturday after Christmas: An earthquake had leveled the ancient Iranian city of Bam, and the United States was sending help.

Hours later, he joined about 60 other surgeons, nurses and paramedics from the International Medical Surgical Response Team on the first U.S. military flight to Iran in 24 years.
They would have little time to think about diplomacy. Early estimates numbered 20,000 dead, probably more.

"I was thinking ... if these numbers were true, how tired we would be," Born, an orthopedic surgeon at Temple University Hospital, said last week in Philadelphia.
In tents set up amid the rubble, without running water or X-rays, the team treated 727 patients in four days — stabilizing and evacuating patients with crushed limbs, delivering six babies, even operating on an Iranian soldier who had accidentally shot himself in the leg.
"Once we started taking care of patients, and we were working day and night to take care of these people ... I think most of those political questions were resolved," said Dr. Susan Briggs, a trauma surgeon from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston who leads the team.
The United States and Iran broke diplomatic ties in 1979 after Iranian revolutionaries seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held U.S. diplomats hostage for 444 days.
U.S. officials stressed the team's humanitarian purpose. "We saw a need and we responded. We offered and our offer of aid was accepted," state department spokesman Lou Fintor said.
The emergency response team, based in Boston and assembled in 1999 after attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa, was already on stand-by because of the national orange-level terrorism alert when the state department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (news - web sites) asked for their help in Iran.
The team operates under the National Disaster Medical System of the Department of Homeland Security and trains throughout the year to deploy with just a few hours notice. Their past missions include responding to the World Trade Center attacks and a 2002 typhoon in Guam.
In Iran, the magnitude-6.6 earthquake devastated Bam's health care system. Three hospitals collapsed. Dialysis patients and children with pulmonary disease worsened by dust from the mud brick rubble looked to the American team for help because their own doctors had died.
In the end, the death toll rose to more than 41,000.
Residents living in tents outside their wrecked homes suffered post-traumatic stress. One man who hadn't eaten or spoken in five days walked into the field hospital and collapsed, said Briggs, 60.
"It's incomprehensible to lose 30 or 40 members of your extended family all at once," she said.
Respecting Iranian cultural beliefs, women on the medical staff made head coverings from triangular arm slings as the team improvised with whatever materials were available.
Jacqueline Nally, 40, a clinical nurse supervisor at Mass General, said IV bags and cardboard boxes heated with outdoor lights doubled as bassinets and blankets for the newborns.
Iranian soldiers armed with AK-47s guarded the Americans, said Born, 55.
"Because of the diplomatic situation, we were kind of a high profile group," he said. "Many members of our team, myself included, had moments of fear that somebody would make a statement, using us in a way."
When the team left Bam on Jan. 6, they donated their generators, tents and more than $1 million in medical equipment to a new international Red Cross and Red Crescent hospital.
Their Iranian patients found many ways of expressing their gratitude, returning to the field hospital with cold juice and flowers or to take pictures with their doctors.

Born said, "I had a few people tell us on the side, looking over their shoulders, how glad they were to have us there."

BAM, Jan 28 (IranMania) -- According to Iran's State News Agency (IRNA) British Ambassador to Tehran Richard Dalton said that though world countries hardly come to terms on any issue, coordination of affairs by Iran made the governments and people of diverse nationalities to get along properly in extending rescue operations and humanitarian relief in the quake-stricken Bam city.

Appreciating the close cooperation of Iranian officials in charge, particularly those from Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in rescue operations, he told IRNA that the immediate response of the Iranian rescuers following the tragic earthquake which has been going on for more than a month should be praised.

"According to my past experience, the process of providing the quake victims of Bam city with humanitarian relief has been among the best throughout the world and I believe that It was coordinated perfectly.

"IRCS proceeded in perfect harmony and was actually a front-runner in coordinating and supervising a wide range of relief and rescue operations launched by the Red Cross and Red Crescent rescue teams from 20 countries,"
he added.

Destruction in a residential area of Bam
The The Iranian Red Crescent, with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has set up the first 12 of a series of tent camps in and around the southern Iranian city of Bam to house survivors of the devastating earthquake which struck the historic city on December 26.
The Iranian government estimates the earthquake killed more than 41,000 people and made another 75,000 homeless. A Red Cross spokeswoman, Marie-Francoise Borel, says many of the survivors are camped outside their houses. She says they are reluctant to leave and are trying to salvage what they can from the rubble.

Ms. Borel says 1,400 families, or 6,500 people, are living in the tented camps. She says plans are under way to erect more camps to house thousands of other homeless people.

"The advantage of these camps is that you group people together and they will have access in these camps to proper sanitation systems, proper systems of health care, proper water systems, et cetera," she said. "It is much easier and much more effective to distribute all the assistance that you need to distribute in a camp setting than it is in scattered tents all over the city."

Ms. Borel says one of these camps, named Hamadan, will shelter 3,000 people injured in the earthquake. By grouping the injured together in one camp, she says, it will be easier to provide them with the medical care they need.

Although the needs remain great, she says that in some ways the situation in Bam is stabilizing and life is returning to the battered city.

"Babies are being born in the field hospitals," said Marie-Francoise Borel. "We have now passed the mark of 50 babies born since the earthquake. So, there is some sort of normalcy. In these camps, we are also setting up social areas, recreational areas and some schools. So, it is stabilized. We are trying to get back to some normalcy, but it will take a long time before the city is rebuilt, before people find jobs again, before they can get over the grief."

Ms. Borel notes that nearly half of Bam's population died during the earthquake. She says the Iranian Red Crescent with support from the federation is running a large psychological program in the city to help the residents deal with their trauma.

DEVELOPMENT-IRAN: Quake Survivors Blighted by Politics, Opium

Survivors of the Dec. 26, 2003, earthquake in which up to 50,000 people died say they have yet to see millions of dollars worth of international relief supplies airlifted to Iran in the aftermath.

BAM, Iran -- Survivors of the Dec. 26, 2003, earthquake in which up to 50,000 people died say they have yet to see millions of dollars worth of international relief supplies airlifted to Iran in the aftermath.

"Let the people of the world know that we, the quake stricken in Bam, have received almost nothing of the foreign relief unloaded in Tehran or Bam or Kerman airports," one volunteer told visiting journalists and aid workers. Countless others among the city's 90,000-odd homeless residents echoed the sentiment.

"Scrutinize everywhere. Can you find a single Russian, American, or even Saudi or Kuwaiti tent anywhere?" asked another man, his family's tent branded with the emblem of the Iranian Red Crescent.

Residents blamed election-year politics.

"Both camps (the government and opposition) are preoccupied with power struggles and only show off that they are thinking of us in the local media," said Hamid Pourhamidi, 34, an ex-shopkeeper.

Hamid's family survived and his wife, Niyer Dehgan, 30, now runs a small makeshift nursery school in a tent. The only supplies she had received were some pencils and notepads from the U.N. Children's Fund.

"The children and their families live in conditions of appalling sanitation," she added. "This area is going to be very warm within two weeks and prone to contagious diseases." Niyer said.

Local officials denied a request for brightly colored school uniforms, proposed to lift the children's spirits, said Maryam Asadi, 56, a retired teacher. Many children paint their families' tents for recreation; all of them, it seems, talk ceaselessly about being pulled from rubble, she added.

Fuelling that talk are almost nightly tremors and aftershocks.

"I do not think we will return to our rebuilt homes some day in the near, or even the far, future," said one woman.

Her husband, Akbar Englizi, a former English teacher in his early 60s who ran a cozy guesthouse before the quake, sounded more upbeat but couldn't explain why.

"I do not have any concrete reason to be hopeful," he said. "But my gut says Bam will regain her international acclaim and be rebuilt."

Perhaps. Local geologists have warned of further quakes because of tectonic movement in the region. On seismic maps, fault lines in the shape of a giant horseshoe ring the city as if embracing it.

Consensus on just what to do about this -- rebuild the city where it stood, move certain neighborhoods a few kilometers this way or that, or relocate the whole city -- continues to evade officials and planners, according to local media including Radio Omid, the name of which means "Hope".

The officials' disorientation translates into further bewilderment for the tent dwellers.

"Between now and the unknown future, we have to seize the moment and just seek pleasure in our tents and on the pavement," said Ahmad Hassani, 48, a conspicuous opium addict as he squatted in his tent with other addicts.

"The quake claimed my wife and children," he said with a sigh and tears in his eyes. "I have no motivation to seek a job."

Alok Kulserashta, a general practitioner at the field hospital set up and staffed by 63 Indian personnel just southwest of the city, appeared to understand Ahmad's plight.

"More than 50 percent of the outpatients coming to our field hospital every day want to reduce the distress. They are eager to talk to feel better.. Their agony is too much to bear by themselves," he said.

"Unfortunately the language barrier is big and we have asked for Farsi-speaking psychologists to provide counseling," Alok added.

Other residents, however, say they believe that the city's addicts succumbed to drugs -- chiefly opium, as Bam long had been a weigh station in the drug trade between neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"All the good and healthy died under the rubble and the tramps, looters and addicts remained .The looters came from Narmashire and other nearby towns and stormed here to pretend that they too were victims and to loot furniture under the guise of salvaging it," said Kobra Dehghan, a 40-year-old housewife and mother who lost her brothers, sisters, parents and nephews and nieces -- 36 relatives in all -- to the earthquake.

"Unless the authorities conduct a purge of tent dwellers, the city has no future for its native people," she added.

For most, housing remains the most pressing matters.

Officials have said that more than 800 prefabricated houses granted by Turkey are being equipped with locally manufactured latrines, showers and utilities. The Iranian Housing Foundation, assisted by the defense ministry, faces a target of building more than 12,000 prefabricated houses in less than two months.

International pledges have been received for a remaining 8,000 needed housing units, officials have said.

Even so, progress so far has been slow.

"They were supposed to build 244 prefabs with polystyrene inner walls sandwiched between wire mesh covered with cement with iron skeletons and firm concrete foundations within a week to be inaugurated on the revolution anniversary but as you see only about two dozen of them have been erected," Ali Jebeli, a technician at a housing project east of the city said as the Feb. 11 national holiday approached.

908. Holly Bergeim (American) I sign this petition, knowing its requests are legitimate, and knowing that neither the U.N. nor any organization in the free world which is able to make any difference at all will take a stand on global despotism and human atrocities. They all have other agendas. Agendas of power and greed. I sign this, only because history should record the names of those who see through the greed and hippocrisy in today's world that feeds despotism and atrocity - and who despise it. History should record that, even in these terrible days, some compassionate people actually existed, who place real value on ALL human life. Mexico retired professional
