For the past 4 days I have been watching a documentary on PBS, called the "Carrier". It is about the navy ship USS Nimitz & the life of its sailors. The ship was deployed to the Persian Gulf, after several stops, to support the US troops in Iraq & also keep an eye on iri. Throughout this documentary everyone, from the top admiral, to the bottom sailor constantly referred to their location as "Arabian Gulf" or Arabian Sea! These are the people that should know better!
I am beginning to think, perhaps this change of name, is a deliberate attempt by the US, & others (including Google), to show the dominance of Arabs in that region & marginaliz Iran.

Blank jan,

In the past 4 weeks I keep hearing Mrs Rice trying to bring a greater clash between Persians and Arabs by selling them weapons and saying openly Arabs have to be careful of Iranian dominant and influence in Mideast. They are now playing for the first time the Nation/Nationalistic cards on the table.

I totally agree with you. Behind all these or deletion of the name Iran in Yahoo, is USA. It is simple naive if we trust Americans. They would never help us. We have to make it ourselves. They always have been stupid in their foreign policies. Look how they betrayed Shah. They start another Arab o Persian War in these years. You will see. If Arabs win, Ahwaz will be separated. If Iran win, Mullahs will continue their rule. We are doomed!!!

Dear Ashavan:
One thing I know for sure, there is going to be an election in Israel soon, and Benjamin Natanyahou is running as a candidated for prime-minister. I am pretty sure he will be elected. He has clearly said "he will be pro-active & will not allow another holocost", in response to Antarinejad's statement that he will wipe Israel off the map. He knows very well the danger of a nuclear rag-heads, and will not wait for the West & US keep "negotiating" nonsense.... I believe he will bomb the sites that they think is providing Nukes for destruction of Isreal and the world. I also believe with the new president in France they may help Israel behind the scenes. US is preparing the Arab countries so they will defend themselves against Iranian attack on their oil reserve; & in case of closing of the Strait of Hormoz
If that happens (Israel destroying Nuke sites), I only have one hope that Iranians will rise up and start destroying IRI. This may never happen, but I hope West for their own sake will help opposition groups in Iran to uproot the IRI, by giving them, communication equipments & weapons. If the West has an ounce of brain they should know the success in Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan lies on a regime change in Iran.

Gulf Nations Steel for Iran Reprisal if Israel Attacks

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 2:28 PM

By: Arnaud de Borchgrave

Gulf Cooperation Council members Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman are getting ready for what many now assume will be retaliation from Iran if Israel follows through with threats to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities this year.

Up and down the Persian Gulf, Patriot missile batteries have been deployed around key oil installations. The Patriot system is designed to detect, target, and hit incoming missiles that may be no more than 10 to 20 feet long and flying at three to five times the speed of sound. Iran has hundreds of missiles and rockets.

In the United States, high-ranking Gulf Cooperation Council military and defense officials, including army, air force, and navy chiefs, are streaming into and out of Washington, D.C.

Gulf rulers are fearful that Israel's new government, headed by the tough, uncompromising Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, will walk away from any possibility of a Palestinian solution. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said as much when he stated: "We are no longer bound by the previous government's undertakings for the negotiation of a Palestinian state."

The Annapolis accord of 2007 for a two-state solution? Didn't happen on our watch, said Israel's new governing team. Lieberman even wants to strip any rights from Arab Israelis who are disloyal to the Jewish state.

Undeterred, George Mitchell, the new super negotiator for a Middle East settlement, went back to the region for the third time since Barack Obama became president of the United States. He sees a glimmer of hope for a peace deal with Syria that would detach the ruling dictatorship from its close ties with Iran. But a Netanyahu government in Israel is not about to give up control of the Golan Heights it has occupied since the 1967 Six Day War.

Although Iran may unclench its fist in words, as President Obama unclenched America's, no one in Israel, and very few in other countries, believes Iran's theocrats will relinquish the nuclear ambitions they have been working on secretly for the past quarter of a century. Netanyahu echoed near-unanimous Israeli feelings when he said an Iranian bomb, coupled with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejads threats of destruction against the Jewish state, is an "existential crisis" that Israel cannot and will not ignore.

Israel's moderate President Shimon Peres added a stern warning: Well strike if forthcoming talks with Iran don't yield results. But, he added, this cannot be done without the United States. Israel's military intelligence chief, Amos Yadlin, told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the emergence of a nuclear arsenal in Iran is now "mainly dependent on a political decision."

The assumption among most Gulf Cooperation Council rulers is that Israel will launch bombers against some of Iran's 27 nuclear sites as soon as it becomes clear the mullahs won't agree to surrender their nuclear option at upcoming six-power talks. The United States and Iran will be at the same negotiating table along with China, Russia, Britain, France, and Germany for the first time since the Iranian Revolution ousted the shah 30 years ago.

Iran's next presidential elections are scheduled for June 14, when Ahmadinejad may lose the presidency to a candidate Western powers judge to be comparatively moderate. But the latest word from Iran watchers is that the supreme religious leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, favors the re-election of his extremist protege. This would be another green light for the Netanyahu coalition government to order an attack.

Interestingly enough, not all the ruling Sunni families in the gulf are against an Israeli attempt to disrupt Iran's nuclear plans. Most feel threatened by nukes in the hands of a Shiite clerical regime that dreams of dominating the gulf, as the shah once did when Britain in 1968 gave up all its commitments east of Suez. In 1971, the shah seized three strategic islands near the Strait of Hormuz Abu Musa and Lesser and Greater Tunb that Britain had entrusted to the ruler of Abu Dhabi. The mullahs refused to return them and then militarized them with naval guns.

There is plenty of tinder up and down the gulf for a major conflagration throughout the region should Israel strike Iran. The mullahs with their revolutionary guards and far-flung intelligence services possess formidable asymmetrical retaliatory capabilities. They also have at their subversive disposal Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, coupled with a growing influence in the West Bank.

Morocco recently severed diplomatic relations with Iran after its agents were caught proselytizing against Sunni Islam and King Mohammed VI. Dubai, one of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates, has 400,000 Iranian residents, including scores of undercover agents. Saudi Arabia's eastern province, where most its oil fields are located, as well as the world's largest offshore oil terminal at Ras Tanura and the kingdom's oil nerve center at Abqaiq, also has a large Shiite minority.

And in the kingdom of Bahrain, headquarters for the U.S. 5th Fleet, a majority of the population is Shiite and subject to frequent agitation against the ruling Sunni family.

Qatar, which now enjoys the world's highest standard of living with a per-capita income of $78,000, straddles the gulf fence with both ears to the ground, a somewhat ungainly posture but one that's deemed far more secure. The firebrand satellite television station al-Jazeera was created by Qatar's ruling al-Thani family and is headquartered in Doha, the capital.

But the United States also was authorized to build a base in Qatar with one of the world's longest military runways. Qatar is forward headquarters for the Tampa-based Central Command headed by Gen. David Petraeus. For the past 15 years, the charismatic Sheika Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the Qatari emir's wife, spearheaded an educational drive that brought several leading U.S. universities to establish branches in Qatar.

If attacked, Iran also could jeopardize an orderly U.S. military exit from neighboring Iraq in 2010. The two countries fought a war from 1980-1988 that killed about 1 million soldiers from both countries. Iran is influential in the western region of Afghanistan.

Oman, which faces Iran across the Strait of Hormuz, always has made good relations with Iran a top priority. But the prudent Omanis also have the gulf's best internal security system.

Do you remember this? from "Iran's Foreign Agents of Disinformation"

http://activistchat.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8330&start=15

Guess what his new job is in Obama's administratin.

"Update on Dr. Vali Reza Nasr: Baztab, the VEVAK (Vezarate etelaat va amniate keshvar) website, carried an article by former Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC/Pasdaran) chief Mohsen Rezai (now Secretary of the IRI's State Expediency Council) on October 26, 2006 praising Nasr's rise to prominence as an expert on Shiite political power. The article notes that both Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have met with Nasr, but that Nasr's advice that the US should accept Iran as a regional power, and start negotiations and come to terms with Iran's leaders has not yet been accepted as yet. Rezai calls Nasr's policy recommendations as "realistic and inclusive" as they accord the Shiites more power, as opposed to Orientalist Bernard Lewis' approach that gave greater control to the Sunni with hopes to democratize Iraq and the region. Rezai's article has disappeared from Baztab in the last few days, but it seems that he feels Vali Nasr is doing a good job. Given Rezai's background and his current position in the regime, we should wonder why Nasr is receiving his approval. Looks like Vali Nasr is telling it just like Tehran wants it told."

Iran Divides Obama, Netanyahu

Monday, May 18, 2009 11:28 AM

By: Kenneth R. Timmerman

http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/Iran_Obama_Netanyahu/2009/05/18/215421.html

Despite pledges from both Israeli and U.S. officials that the White House meeting between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today would offer no fireworks, fundamental differences on how to deal with the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran divide the two men and their administrations.

Last week, the Obama administration reportedly dispatched senior State Department adviser Vali Nasr as a special envoy to Tehran in the hope of persuading Iran to resume high-level talks between the two countries.
Although Netanyahu does not oppose a diplomatic approach, he believes tougher measures will be needed to stop the Iranian nuclear weapons program, starting with tougher economic sanctions, which Obama has rejected.

During an interview with Newsweek that appeared just hours before the White House meeting with Netanyahu, President Obama called his approach toward Iran superior to anything that has been tried before, even though his strategy of offering talks and trade in exchange for concessions on Irans nuclear program is virtually identical to the approach of the Bush White House.

Senior U.S. government officials met with their Iranian counterparts 22 times during the Bush administration, with little to show for the meetings.

The last high-level talks, led by undersecretary of state William Burns, who has maintained his position in the Obama administration, led to a frustrating stalemate in Geneva in June.

Nevertheless, Obama explained in the Newsweek interview that the approach we are taking is one that has to be given a chance and offers the prospect of security, not just for the United States but also for Israel, that is superior to some of the other alternatives."

Top advisers to Netanyahu told Newsmax last month in Jerusalem that his administration saw the entire region through the prism of Iran.

The possibility of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons is an issue that dwarfs all others, a Netanyahu confidant told Newsmax. If Irans nuclear ambitions are left unchecked, this could be a turning point that is irreversible.

For more on this, read Prime Minister Netanyahu: Iran Is New Focus.

Although Obama said in the Newsweek interview that he understands Israels fears, his administration has insisted that it wants to see Israeli concessions on the creation of a Palestinian state before the U.S. would help Israel on Iran.

During a closed-door meeting with 300 top donors to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) this month, White House chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel made that linkage explicit.

Emmanuel told us point blank that the U.S. would do nothing to put pressure on Iran unless [Netanyahu] accepted a Palestinian state, one participant in the meeting told Newsmax.

So Israel first has to make concessions, without any idea of what help on Iran will mean. This is delusional. Its a drug trip, he said.

Vice President Joe Biden delivered that message in public on May 5, when he told AIPAC that Israel has to work for a two state-solution, code words for a Palestinian state.

CIA Director Leon Panetta delivered the message even more bluntly during a previously unpublicized trip to Israel in late April, the Jerusalem Post reported Sunday.

Panetta reportedly asked Israel to tone down its rhetoric on Iran and warned that the U.S. would not approve an Israeli attack on Irans nuclear sites at this time.

Just days after Panettas meetings in Jerusalem with Netanyahu and his intelligence chiefs, the Israeli Air Force conducted another long-range operational exercise over the Mediterranean Sea to practice an eventual bombing run on Iran.

The Obama administration has enlisted moderate Arab leaders, including King Abdallah of Jordan, to pressure Israel to make concessions toward the creation of a Palestinian state before tackling the issue of a nuclear Iran.

King Abdallah said last week during the Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Jordan that, if Israel embraced a Palestinian state, it would have immediate peace with the entire Muslim world. That is not a two-state solution; it is a 57-state solution, he said.

But Netanyahu also has been engaged in diplomacy. In a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on May 11, the two leaders focused almost exclusively on how to create a common Israeli-Arab front against Iran.
Netanyahu also will press Obama to increase economic pressure on Iran but is unlikely to win any concessions.

New sanctions legislation, introduced by Reps. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., last month, has been bottled up by the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee at the request of Obama himself.

I have no intentions of moving this bill through the legislative process in the near future, said committee chairman Howard Berman, even though he is co-sponsoring the bill.

Despite massive oil and gas exports, Iran lacks refinery capacity and continues to import around 40 percent of its gasoline. The new bill would punish companies engaged in the sale, shipment, financing, or insurance of refined petroleum products Iran imports.

It is pathetic that Obama's "special envoy" to Iran for negotiation, is an iri lobbyist...!

For better results, Obama should send Hooshang Amirahmadi and Trita Parsi along with Vali Reza Nasr to negotiate with iri Evil or Very Mad

The Death of Israel

Sunday, May 24, 2009 5:31 PM

By: Dick Morris

From Caroline Glick, deputy editor and op-ed writer for the Jerusalem Post, comes alarming news. An expert on Arab-Israeli relations with excellent sources deep inside Netanyahu's government, she reports that CIA chief Leon Panetta recently took time out from his day job (feuding with Nancy Pelosi) to travel to Israel to "read the riot act" to the government warning against an attack on Iran.

More ominously, Glick reports (likely from sources high up in the Israeli government) that the Obama administration has all but accepted as irreversible and unavoidable fact that Iran will soon develop nuclear weapons. She writes, "...we have learned that the [Obama] administration has made its peace with Iran's nuclear aspirations. Senior administration officials acknowledge as much in off-record briefings. It is true, they say, that Iran may exploit its future talks with the US to run down the clock before they test a nuclear weapon. But, they add, if that happens, the U.S. will simply have to live with a nuclear-armed mullocracy."
She goes on to write that the Obama administration is desperate to stop Israel from attacking Iran writing that "as far as the [Obama] administration is concerned, if Israel could just leave Iran's nuclear installations alone, Iran would behave itself." She notes that American officials would regard any harm to American interests that flowed from an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities as Israel's doing, not Iran's.

In classic Stockholm Syndrome fashion, the Obama administration is empathizing more with the Iranian leaders who are holding Israel hostage than with the nation that may be wiped off the map if Iran acquires the bomb.

Obama's end-of-the-year deadline for Iranian talks aimed at stopping its progress toward nuclear weapons is just window dressing without the threat of military action. As Metternich wrote, "diplomacy without force is like music without instruments." By warning only of possible strengthening of economic sanctions if the talks do not progress, Obama is making an empty threat. The sanctions will likely have no effect because Russia and China will not let the United Nations act as it must if it is to deter Iranian nuclear weapons.

All this means is that Israel's life is in danger. If Iran gets the bomb, it will use it to kill six million Jews. No threat of retaliation will make the slightest difference. One cannot deter a suicide bomber with the threat of death. Nor can one deter a theocracy bent on meriting admission to heaven and its virgins by one glorious act of violence. Iran would probably not launch the bomb itself, anyway, but would give it to its puppet terrorists to send to Israel so it could deny responsibility. Obama, bent on appeasement, would likely not retaliate with nuclear weapons. And Israel will be dead and gone.

Those sunshine Jewish patriots who voted for Obama must realize that we, as Jews, are witnessing the possible end of Israel. We are in the same moral position as our ancestors were as they watched Hitlers rise but did nothing to pressure their favorite liberal Democratic president, FDR, to take any real action to save them or even to let Jewish refugees into the country. If we remain complacent, we will have the same anguish at watching the destruction of Israel that our forebears had in witnessing the Holocaust.

Because one thing is increasingly clear: Barack Obama is not about to lift a finger to stop Iran from developing the bomb. And neither is Hillary Clinton.
Obama may have held the first White House seder, but he's not planning to spend next year in Jerusalem.

Obama Invites Iran to July 4th Parties
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 7:25 AM

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4.
A State Department cable sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates Friday said U.S. diplomats could ask their Iranian counterparts to attend the festivities, which generally feature speeches about American values, fireworks, and, of course, hot dogs and hamburgers.

The posts "may invite representatives from the government of Iran" to the events, a State Department official said Tuesday, quoting from the document. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an internal communication.

It was not clear how many embassies and consulates would invite Iranian diplomats to the July 4 parties or whether any Iranians would accept the invitations.

The cable was first reported by The New York Times.

The move comes amid the administration's ongoing efforts to engage Iran in variety of venues, including formal diplomatic meetings over its nuclear program, violence in Iraq and the situation in Afghanistan.

But Iran has given mixed responses to the overtures, which began early in the administration when President Barack Obama recorded a videotaped greeting to the Iranian people and its leaders for their new year.

Since then, the administration announced that it would be a full participant with Iranian officials in six-nation talks aimed at getting Iran to address concerns about its suspect nuclear program. The U.S. and others accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran maintains it is interested only in a civilian atomic energy program and has refused to accept a package of incentives the U.S. and its partners offered to get it to stop enriching uranium, which can produce the fuel for a nuclear weapon.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp. made public Tuesday, Obama said it is in the world's interest, and Iran's interest, "to set aside ambitions for a nuclear weapon."

Obama also said that, although he didn't want to put "artificial timetables" on diplomacy with Tehran, "we do want to make sure that, by the end of this year, we've actually seen a serious process move forward. And I think that we can measure whether or not the Iranians are serious."

The president said in the interview he believes Iran is more likely to become an "extraordinarily powerful and prosperous country" if it abandons any nuclear weapons ambitions.

The United States also ensured that Iran was invited and attended an international conference on Afghanistan at which Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke and an Iranian official had a brief exchange with a senior American diplomat.

During that meeting in The Hague, U.S. delegates passed an informal note to Iranian officials seeking information about three Americans then missing or detained in Iran.
Last month, Iran released one of the Americans, Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, who was tried and convicted of spying for the United States.
Obama and other U.S. officials have said they do not expect to see much movement from Iran until after the country holds presidential elections in the middle of the month but have sketched a rough deadline of the fall by which they hope to see positive responses to their overtures.

Candidate for presidency; Founder of Hezbollah.

"Reformist" Iranian Candidate Founded Hezbollah

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 1:03 PM

By: Kenneth R. Timmerman

The leading contender of the reformist camp in Irans presidential elections, former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi Khameneh, was a founder of Hezbollah and a key architect of the Islamic Republics dreaded intelligence services, Iranian political activists and scholars tell Newsmax.

His wife, Zahra Rahnavard, is making campaign appearances with him wearing an Iranian-style Islamic veil. Some in the West are even calling her the Michelle Obama of Iran. And yet, a recent photograph from an official Iranian news agency shows her stomping on an American flag.

Is Mousavi really a reformer who, if elected on June 12, will change significantly the way the Iran treats its own citizens and deals with the outside world?

Or is he just the latest smiling face being put forward by the regime to raise false hopes among Iranians and beguile the West, just as Mohammad Khatami managed to do in 1997?

Well, he's no reformer, in the eyes of the spokesman for the hard-left Peoples Fedai Guerillas of Iran, who uses the nom de guerre Bahram'.

He believes in the most radical ideology of the regime, but he sometimes appears more logical than the other candidates, Bahram told Newsmax. No one should expect more freedoms in Iran if he is elected.

Mousavi was one of the architects of the Ministry of Intelligence and Information when it was established in 1984, Bahram said.

That ministry, also referred to as MOIS, was modeled closely after the KGB and was established with the help of Soviet advisers.

Like its predecessor, SAVAK, the MOIS plays a key role in suppressing domestic dissent. It recruits informers, arrests critics of the regime, and tortures them brutally in special political prisons.

MOIS also has been involved in murdering Iranian dissidents overseas and has been cited as a key player in terrorism cases from Germany to Argentina. In 2007, Interpol issued its third arrest warrant for former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian on terrorism charges. Fallahian is an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

A former Iranian intelligence officer, Abdolghassem Mesbahi, tells Newsmax that he used to work for Mousavi when Mousavi headed the regimes intelligence services as Irans prime minister.

Todays reformer was yesterdays terrorist, he says.

Mir Hossein Mousavi was one of the founders of Hezbollah. Ayatollah Khomeini put him on the Hezollah leadership council when the group was created in 1982-1983.

In an interview with Payane Enghelab magazine in 1981, Mousavi called for the creation of an Iranian-controlled Lebanese militia to spearhead a military confrontation with Israel.

(unfortunately, Hezbollah is winning election in Lebanon, thanks to Mousavi and other terrorists, controlling Iran's oil revenue, and diverting it to Hamas & Hezbollah./b)

We are ready to participate with an armed force to fight Israel, he said. We have repeatedly announced that we are ready to have an actual, real and military presence in Southern Lebanon and on the borders of the occupied Palestinian lands, a euphemism for Israel.

Once Iran created Hezbollah in 1983, Mousavi coordinated the financing for it as the head of the Bonyad Mostazafan, which he chaired as prime minister.

For example, working with Mehdi Hashemian, a deputy oil minister, Mousavi set up a scheme so that Hezbollah would get a share of Iranian oil sales, Mesbahi said.

Hashemian is a cousin of then-parliament speaker Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani. Under the scheme, Hashemian established front companies for the oil transactions in France, Germany, and Cyprus, and the banks would do the rest, putting commissions into the Hezbollah accounts under fictitious names, Mesbahi said.

The Bonyad-e Mostazafan, known in the West as the Foundation of the Oppressed, or the Alavi Foundation, was created from the vast real estate and corporate holdings of the former shah of Iran, and is under the direct control of the supreme leader.

The Bonyad-e Mostazafan makes purchases for several hundred companies in Iran and buys equipment for the Iranian nuclear weapon, chemical/biological weapon and missile programs, according to the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control.

Western intelligence agencies have cited the foundation, and a sister organization known as the Martyrs Foundation, as a major funding source for Iranian-backed terrorist groups.

For many years the Martyrs Foundation was run by Hojjat-ol-Eslam Mehdi Karoubi, another self-styled reformist candidate in the presidential election.
Mir-Hossein Mousavi comes from a large clan, and is said to be a younger half-brother of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The Mousavi family originally was Arabic and claims to descend from the seventh of the 12 Shiite imams, Musa al-Kazim ibn Jafar as Sadiq.
(perhaps he is one of the thousands of arabs brought in by Arafat to help Khomenie gaatel./b)

The founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini, was also a member of the extended clan, as was Abbas Mousavi, a Hezbollah secretary general killed in Lebanon in an Israeli missile strike on Feb. 16, 1992.

Mousavi was prime minister at the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1988 when tens of thousands of political prisoners were murdered in cold blood on the orders of Ayatollah Khomeini.

Students would like to debate Mousavi on the 1988 massacre at an election rally, said Roozbeh Farahanipour, a leader of the student uprising in Iran in 1999.
Farahanipour sent Newsmax photographs of banners on display during Mousavis election rally on May 21 that read, We Want Revolution Again.
In a cell phone video recording, the students can be heard interrupting Mousavi with chants, Death to the Dictator.

Pro-democracy groups, including Farahanipours Marzeporgohar Party, have called on Iranians to boycott the elections, with one saying, This is a selection, not an election.

Debate between the two Presidential candidates, Hezbollah Mousavi and Current madman Ahmadinejad!

http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/iran_elections/2009/06/05/221998.html

Iran's Presidential Candidates Trade Barbs

Friday, June 5, 2009 12:43 PM

By: Kenneth R. Timmerman

Irans president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has accused his election opponent of corruption, lying, and ganging up with others to undermine his presidency.

For his part, his rival, former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi, has accused Ahmadinejad of taking the country toward dictatorship, and damaging Irans reputation with Ahmadinejad's infamous rants denying the Holocaust, all while he posed for pictures with U.S. servicemen during an official visit to Iraq last year.

The presidential election is scheduled to take place in Iran on June 12.

The extraordinary debate, televised live on Wednesday evening on Iranian television, marked a first in Iranian politics since the 1979 revolution, with virtually 90 minutes of uninterrupted airing of each others dirty laundry.

Ahmadinejad lumped Mousavi in with two earlier reformist presidents, Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, and Mohammad Khatami, and accused the three of conspiring to bring down his presidency.

Today there is not only Mr. Mousavi confronting me, since there are three consecutive governments of Mr. Mousavi, Mr. Hashemi, and Mr. Khatami, all against me, he said.

Mousavi led the government as prime minister from 1981-1989. After the position of prime minister was abolished, Hashemi-Rafsanjani took over as president in 1989, with Mousavi as a top adviser. Khatami succeeded Rafsanjani in 1997, again taking Mousavi as an advisor to his government.

I am not faced with a singe candidate, but with a group, whose main axis is Mr. Hashemi, who moved against me relying on the cooperation of Mr. Mousavi and Mr. Khatami, Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad accused Rafsanjanis son of corrupt dealings with the Norwegian state-owned oil company, STATOIL, a scandal that rocked Iran after the Norwegian police raided STATOIL headquarters in 2003 and discovered payments to a consulting company in the Turks and Caicos Islands with links to Rafsanjanis son.

Holding up a file and a photograph of Mousavis popular wife, Zahra Rahnavard, a university president, Ahmadinejad claimed that her doctorate degree was fake because she had entered a graduate program without taking the highly-competitive entrance exam.

That led Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to make an unprecedented statement this morning to the state-run media, urging the candidates to refrain from personal attacks.

In earlier campaign appearances, Mousavi has accused Ahmadinejad of squandering more than $200 billion in Irans oil revenues since taking over as president four years ago.

During the debate, the former prime minister made several new allegations.

Mousavi claimed that Ahmadinejad sent a letter to Barack Obama through the Swiss ambassador in Tehran last fall, offering to hold direct negotiations with the new U.S. administration to resolve U.S.-Iran tensions.

Mousavi also reminded viewers of Ahmadinejads dire public warnings before he made an official visit to Iraq in March 2008, that the United States was planning to kidnap him.

Instead, the presidents plane was refueled in Iraq by the U.S. military, and Ahmadinejad posed for pictures with U.S. servicemen and officers, Mousavi said.
