BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Police found 30 more apparent victims of the sectarian slaughter ravaging Iraq -- most of them beheaded -- dumped on a village road north of Baghdad on Sunday. At least 16 other Iraqis were killed in a U.S.-backed raid in a Shi'ite neighborhood of the capital.
In all, at least 69 people were reported killed Sunday in one of the bloodiest days in weeks. Most of the dead appeared to be victims of the Sunni-Shi'ite fighting.
BODIES FOUND: Police said the bodies were found north of Baghdad after police and soldiers responded to a report of killings in Mullah Eid, a village near Buhriz, a former stronghold of ex-President Saddam Hussein's Baath Party.
Authorities gave no immediate information on the identities of the victims or on who might have been responsible. The dead were transferred to a morgue in Baghdad, Police 1st Lt. Thaer Mahmoud said.
BAGHDAD RAID: Accounts varied. Aides to Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and Iraqi police said it took place at a mosque. Police said 22 bystanders died and al-Sadr's aides said 18 innocent men were killed.
The Americans said Iraqi forces backed by U.S. troops killed 16 insurgents in a raid on a meeting hall after gunmen opened fire on troops.
"No mosques were entered or damaged during this operation," the military said.
Videotape showed male bodies with gunshot wounds on the floor of what was said by the cameraman to be the imam's living quarters, attached to the mosque. Shell casings similar to ammunition used by U.S. forces were scattered about the floor.
INTERIOR MINISTRY RAID: Elsewhere in Baghdad, U.S. troops raided an Interior Ministry building Sunday and briefly held about 10 Iraqi policemen after discovering 17 Sudanese prisoners in the facility, Iraqi authorities said.
Maj. Gen. Ali Ghalib, a deputy interior minister, said the Americans quickly determined the Sudanese were being legitimately held and hadn't been abused.
Playing down the significance of the raid, Ghalib said, "It is normal for the friendly forces to enter the building."
The Sudanese were being held for violating residency laws, Ghalib said, adding that the U.S. troops later transferred them elsewhere and released the detained policemen.
IN NAJAF: Earlier, a mortar round hit the ground near anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's home in Najaf. He was home but wasn't hurt, an aide said.
Shortly after the attack, al-Sadr issued a statement calling for calm.
"I call upon all brothers to stay calm," he said. Calling upon the Iraqi army to protect the pilgrims, he said the Nawasib militants are aiming to attack Shi'ites every day.
Najaf's police chief called the assault a cowardly attack by Hussein loyalists whose aim is to divide the Iraqi people. |
