Gunmen Kill 21 On Iran Border

(RFE/RL)
March 17, 2006 – Iran's national chief of police says gunmen have killed at least 21 people in southeastern Iran. Iranian authorities say the gunmen are linked to ethnic tensions near Iran's southeastern border with neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The killings reportedly occurred about 90 kilometers south of the Iranian city of Zabol late on March 16 in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan Province. The area borders Afghanistan's southwest province of Nimroz and Pakistan's southwest province of Balochistan.

General Ismail Ahmadi-Moghaddam says the gunmen posed as security forces. He says they stopped vehicles traveling along Iran's Zabol-Zahedan highway and then killed the drivers and passengers.

Moghaddam says he thinks the gunmen may have fled to Afghanistan. He also suggested that U.S. and British intelligence agents helped instigate the attack. But he gave no details to support that claim.

There have been ethnic and religious tensions in southeastern Iran between Shi'a and Sunni Muslims. There also have been frequent clashes in the area between drug-traffickers and Iranian security forces.

Tehran, Iran, Mar. 17 – Twenty-two Iranian government and provincial officials were killed in an ambush in the south-eastern province of Sistan-va-Baluchistan in the early hours of Friday morning, the government-owned news agency Fars reported.

The incident occurred at 1:20 am as a convoy packed with officials was returning from a gathering in Zabol to the city of Zahedan.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the convoy close to Shileh Bridge killing 22 and injuring seven officials, the report said.

Among those injured in the attack was believed to be the governor of Zahedan, Hossein-Ali Nouri. The report said that he was shot five times and is in critical condition. The head of security of the Zahedan governorate also died in the attack.

The report quoted an “informed source” in a hospital in Zabol as saying that 50 individuals were killed or injured in the attack.

Sistan-va-Baluchistan Province is home to Baluchis, a predominantly Sunni Muslim ethnic minority. Iran has witnessed escalating unrest in recent months in areas populated by Baluchis, who complain of discriminatory and repressive policies by the Shiite clerics who rule the country.

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Sunni rebel group said on Friday it was behind an attack that killed 22 people in a remote region in southeastern Iran that officials had blamed on bandits, Al Arabiya television said.

A caller speaking for Jundollah (God's Soldiers) said the group had attacked the convoy of a provincial governor, killing 22 soldiers, and took seven hostages, including a senior security official, the satellite channel said.

The group, which has kidnapped Iranian soldiers, demanded the release of members detained by Iran, Arabiya said.
