Russian Expert Says Israel Likely to Bomb Iran in Spring

Israel could launch a missile attack on Iran in the upcoming spring, Director of the Russian Political Research Institute Sergei Markov was quoted by Interfax as saying Saturday.

“Israel is in the state of a bitter cold war with Iran and might become the first victim of a nuclear weapon attack: therefore, I deem it very likely that the Israeli Air Force could launch missile strikes on military, nuclear targets in Iran as early as this spring,” Markov told Interfax.

This move, however, would create serious problems for Israel, Markov said. “This would lead to a significant destabilization of the situation in the Middle East, including a dramatic increase in [terrorist] attacks by Islamists on Israel,” he said.

At the same time, the international community will be increasing pressure on Iran, Markov said. In particular, Iran might be subjected to economic sanctions, “which would at first be mild but would then grow tougher and tougher, up to an embargo on purchasing Iranian oil,” he said.

Of Western Media Hype And Iran

The United States has decided to invade Iran and change its regime. The invasion will start on March 19 with bombing raids against "sensitive targets" in Iran by the US Air Force operating from Turkey, the Mussandam Peninsula, and the island of Massirah.

This is the gist of a number of articles, news items and "strategic analyses" published in the Western media over the past two weeks.

Wow! But is this really true? Since journalists should not engage in fortune-telling, we cannot offer a definite answer.

WASHINGTON -- Republican and Democratic senators said on Sunday the United States may ultimately have to undertake a military strike to deter Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but that should be the last resort. "That is the last option. Everything else has to be exhausted. But to say under no circumstances would we exercise a military option, that would be crazy," Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Turkey Warns Iran on Nuclear Issue After EU

http://www.zaman.com/?bl=hotnews&alt=&trh=20060114&hn=28619
Turkey called on neighboring Iran to avoid any move that could erode its dialogue with the international society.
"Turkey hopes that Iran would immediately engage into a full and transparent cooperation with the tripartite European Union (EU) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to overcome the crisis of confidence," the statement from Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
The statement came a day after the EU trio warned Iran that the talks with Iran on nuclear issue were in deadlock.
Iran announced that it would resume nuclear research program following failure of the talks with the EU countries including France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Iran says that its nuclear research program was for peaceful means.

Opinion by Barry Rubin
High-ranking Turkish officials have started speaking, even publicly, of their concern about Iran’s drive to obtain nuclear weapons. This view is quite understandable, but how would this new development affect Turkish interests and is it inevitable?
