Iran Celebrates 'Victory of Light'

TEHERAN -- Iranians munched on nuts and ate long-stored watermelons Sunday while listening to tales and poems recited by elders at extended family gatherings to celebrate the longest night of the year.
Known as Yalda, the celebration dates back thousands of years to the time when Zoroastrianism was the predominant religion of ancient Persia.
The celebration recognizes the symbolic victory of light over darkness and following the night of Yalda, days become longer.
"Today, Yalda is merely a social occasion when family members get together for fun," said Zoroastrian priest Goshtasb Belivani.
