Tehran criticizes France's "extremist decision"

TEHRAN -- Iran on Sunday criticized French President Jacques Chirac's "extremist decision" to back a ban on Islamic headscarves and other conspicuous religious signs at schools.

"We regard this as an extremist decision aimed at preventing the development of Islamic values" in France, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said in his weekly press conference.

"This decision goes against civil rights and will undermine the image of France in the Islamic world," he added.

Asefi asked the French government to give up "this proposed law, by taking into account the traditions and the culture of the French Muslims".

After months of heated debate, France's so-called Stasi committee of experts last week recommended banning "conspicuous" religious insignia -- including the Muslim headscarf, the Jewish kippa and large crucifixes -- from state schools, which are in principle strictly secular.

In a speech Wednesday, Chirac came out in favour of the ban, which he wants written into law by the start of the next academic year.

As if flogging women for improper veil, physically assualting women on the streets for having their veils slip back is not extreme

France's decision is nowhere near as extreme as Iran's forced veiling laws, and routine physical assault and battery of women for improper veiling! In view of how many young mulsim girls in France are physically forced to wear the veil, brutally killed for not wearing it, or gang raped in the muslim slums by Islamists for not wearing one, I fully support the French government's ban!

The only thing i approve of Chirac's policy.

I've just seen on TV the images of muslim and not muslim women protesting this choice and shouting "freedom, freedom"-..

as you says, Spenta, these people don't even remember all the women which are forced to bring the veil !!!!!!
