A general strike has started to paralyze, since this morning, the northwestern Iran. Cities, such as, Marivan, Bookan, Sardashat, Mahabad, Baneh, Saghez, Piranshahr, and Sannandaj are affected by the popular action.

Many governmental employees, local businessmen and farmers have refused to show up at their usual work. Threats made were not enough to dissuade a population exasperated by over two decades of dictatorship.

Iranian Kurds, Persians and Azaris who're living in the region, which is composed by the two provinces of Kurdistan and W. Azarbaijan, have given hand to hand and stayed home. The streets are empty and given up to the Islamic regime forces.

The population intend by this way to show the rejection of the Islamic regime and to protest against human rights abuses in Iran.

The call for this kind of Disobedience Movement was made by several groups and was especially echoed by several abroad based Persian satellite TV and radio networks. It follows over two weeks of unrest and violent clashes that have resulted in tens of deaths and injured.

The situation in the region is very tense and the Islamic regime has deployed unprecedented number of security forces and materials.

Mullah: 'Lack of information cause of unrest'

Aug 7, 2005, 19:19

Interior Minister mullah Mousavi Lari on Sunday blamed lack of correct information as cause of recent unrest in western parts of the country.

Talking to reporters at the sidelines of a gathering of commanders of Islamic Republic of Iran Police (IRIP), mullah said majority of people had no information about the true identity of the culprit who was killed by IRIP in a western city.

Stressing that opposition groups took advantage of people's lack of information, he explained that the killed person was not a political activist but a culprit who was accused of several cases of moral and financial offenses.

Noting that there were currently no security problem in the cities of Sanandaj and Mahabad in western country, the minister said that a delegation has been assigned to probe into the case and report the results of their investigations to people.

Asked about the assassination of Judge Masoud Moqaddas, mullah said he had no detailed information on the case but quoted the Information Ministry as having already announced that some clues have been found.

On the several cases of bomb explosions in the country which took place in June ahead of presidential elections in the country, the minister said certain elements tried to make the country seem unsafe prior to elections.

He further said he believed the explosions were not planned by counter-revolutionary groups.

Turning to the fate of a report recently compiled by his ministry on the cases of violations during the 9th presidential elections, he said the report has been handed over to the judiciary with a demand for urgent follow-up.

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 08 – Relatives of those arrested in the Kurdish town of Saqqez, northwest Iran, during last week’s anti-government protests have continued their gathering and vigil outside the town’s central prison where they have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their family members.

Last week, deadly clashes rocked Saqqez as agents of the SSF opened fire on demonstrators from military helicopters.

The relatives of the political prisoners who had gathered outside the prison since Saturday have spent two nights outside the prison, lighting candles as a symbolic gesture and protesting their children’s detention. They have said that they refuse to leave the site until their loved ones are freed.

There is a strong military presence in Saqqez and the town is currently under a de facto martial law. Many shops have been shut down and storeowners have refused to come to work as part of a general strike against the government’s use of force.

At least 13 people have been reported killed as a result of the government crackdown.

The clashes in Saqqez came in the wake of a series of protests that have swept Kurdish towns and cities in Iran for the past month. Hundreds of protesters have been injured or arrested by government troops in several towns.

Just needs a tumbleweed or two, and two gunmen facing each other in a showdown!

By the way, when the Ceaucescu regime came down in Rumania, the unrest started among ethnic Germans in the western mountains, and just kept unraveling from there. Perhaps things will happen the same way in Iran now!

Twenty Killed in Clashes as Unrest Sweeps Iran
8/9/2005 KurdishMedia.com

August 08, 2005

kurdmedia.com http://www.kurdmedia.com/news.asp?id=7454

Concern is escalating at the escalating crisis in Iran’s north-west Kurdish regions that has left at least 20 dead and numerous wounded and imprisoned. Protection of human rights has deteriorated rapidly as protests and civil unrest in the cities of Saqiz, Sine, Mahabad, Serdesht, Piranshar, Meriwan, Shino, Baneh, Divan and Dareh have been met by excessive force by state security forces, plainclothes agents and paramilitary Islamic vigilantes. The government has implemented de-facto martial law in many areas, and has reportedly deployed over 100,000 troops and helicopter gunships to the region.

Human rights violations reported have included the gunning down of civilians by military helicopter, the harassment and imprisonment of journalists and human rights defenders, indiscriminate arrests of civilians including children, the torture or ill-treatment of detained Kurdish protestors, and the closure of two newspapers.

The crisis threatens to escalate yet further, with implications for the security of the wider region. The depth and breadth of the situation, coupled with the Iranian government’s refusal to provide adequate information, demands the immediate attention of the international community.

The Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran (PDK-I) has released the names of 17 of the dead, all of whom were Kurds.

Journalists and human rights defenders confirmed to have been arrested include:

Madih Ehamedi (human rights defender and journalist)
Jalal Qavami (journalist and member of the editorial board of the journal Payam-e Mardom)
Eclali Qewami (human rights campaigner and journalist)
Roya Toloui (editor of Rassan - a periodical that highlights the situation of Kurdish women in Iran)
Mahmoud Salehi (spokesperson for the Organisational Committee to Establish Trade Unions)
Dr Ruyai Telyi (activist and writer)
Azad Zamani (activist in the Association in Defence of Children’s Rights)

The whereabouts of several of the detainees are still unknown.

The unrest was ignited by the killing of Shivan Qaderi [1], a key figure in Mahabad’s Kurdish national movement. According to eyewitnesses, Qaderi was shot at point blank range. Then still alive, he was reportedly tied to a Toyota Jeep and dragged through the streets. Local Iranian authorities assert that Qaderi was killed by security forces while attempting to evade arrest.

The unrest, ranging from peaceful sit-ins to violent clashes, soon escalated, spreading to many other cities in the region, as many in the Kurdish population expressed dissatisfaction with the cycle of violence, arrests and oppressive behaviour of Iranian forces.

There are nearly 9-million Kurds in Iran, constituting between 11 and 16 per cent of the population. The recent presidential election, which was heavily boycotted by Kurds, brought to power hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is suspected of involvement in the assassination of PDK-I leader Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou in 1989. Many Kurds feared his ascension would usher in a worrying rollback of the little reform that had occurred under Mohammed Khatami.

Kerim Yildiz, Executive Director, says, “We are urging the Iranian Government to provide access to an independent team of observers to ascertain the true nature of the crisis. Proper investigation is also required into the killings, arbitrary arrests, and use of torture or ill-treatment. It is imperative that security and military forces act according to recognised international standards of conduct and international human rights treaties.”

Mass strike brings Iran’s Kurdish provinces to a standstill Mon. 8 Aug 2005

http://www.iranfocus.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=3222

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 08 – Several Kurdish towns in northwest Iran have come to a standstill after people launched a mass strike against the crackdown by authorities on anti-government protests that had erupted in the provinces of Kurdistan and Western Azerbaijan over the past month.

People in the restive town of Mahabad, where much of the unrest began, heeded the call en masse for a general strike. Locals reported that usually busy areas such as Taleghani-Sharghi Street, Taleghani-Gharbi Street, Jame-Jam Street, Kargar Street, Mowlavi-Sharghi Street, and Mowlavi-Gharbi Street, as well as Esteghlal Square, Shayegan Park, and Tanakoura Bazaar were all virtually deserted.

State Security Forces and Revolutionary Guard units have been placed at key locations throughout Mahabad, which is currently under a de facto martial law. Eyewitnesses reported that the security forces approached gatherings of more than two people and detained people not carrying identity cards.

The Friday prayers leader in Mahabad has unsuccessfully appealed to the people to end their strike.

The town of Sardasht, close to Mahabad, has also been the scene of deadly clashes between angry people and agents of the SSF.

Eyewitnesses described the central bazaar as completely empty. There was however tight security throughout the town with eyewitnesses reporting that military helicopters have on three occasions circled above the town in an attempt to prevent sporadic attacks on government offices by angry people.

Kurds in the town of Rabat, which is only 15 kilometres from Sardasht, have also joined the mass strike, locals said.

Piranshahr, a hotbed of anti-government violence, has been on general strike for several days. There has been a large military presence in the town and three military helicopters have been continuously circling above the town, residents reported.

They also reported that Beheshti Street, Jomhouri-Sharghi Street, Jomhouri-Gharbi Street, Azadi-Sharghi Street, Azadi-Gharbi Street, Esteghlal-Sharghi Street, Esteghlal-Gharbi Street were virtually empty.

KDPI Secretary General letter to the UN and EU
10 August 2005
KDPI
KDPI Secretary General letter to Mr. Koffi Annan, Secretary General of United Nations

http://www.kurdmedia.com/printarticles.asp?id=2711

Koy Sanjaq – Kurdistan August 8, 2005

Your Excellency, Mr. Koffi A. Annan, Secretary General of United Nations

We would like to draw your attention to the recent peaceful demonstrations by Kurds in Iran within the last few weeks on the anniversary of our late leader Dr. Abdulrahman Ghassemelou’s assassination, and to protest against the election of Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Islamic Republic of Iran assassinated Ghassemelou on 13th July 1989 in Vienna, and there are strong indications that Ahmadi Nejad had a vital role in our leader’s assassination.

Unfortunately, the security guards of Islamic Republic of Iran, who use oppressive means against Kurds and spill blood in Kurdish cities, violently cracked-down on the peaceful demonstrations of Kurds in Iranian Kurdistan. Dozens of protesters have been killed due to the excessive force of the various security forces against demonstrators. Listed below are the names of some of the victims who have been killed by armed forces during the last few weeks:

1. Sayed Kamal Asfaram,
2. Omar Amini,
3. Bayzid Mairoufi,
4. Mrs. Jamileh Khezri,
5. Mrs. Hakimeh Sour,
6. Loghman Nasrollahi,
7. Mohammad Shariati,
8. Ababs Ramazani,
9. Hosein Ramazani,
10. Farzad Mohammadi,
11. Shadman Mohammadi,
12. Hossein Abdi.

Furthermore, over 300 people have been injured so far, and several hundred have also been arrested, who have been relocated to unknown detention centers, and may indeed have been tortured or ill-treated. So far, four bodies have been handed back to their families in the city of Mahabad, with clear indications that they had been tortured.

Currently, all the Kurdish provinces - West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah and Ilam - are under martial law. The security forces do not hesitate to use live ammunition on the civilian population. Medical staffs are not allowed to treat the injured people, who are mostly kept in custody for interrogation. As a result, most people are too frightened to take their wounded family members to hospitals for treatment. Usually, the families, for fear of further persecution and maltreatment, do not claim the bodies back from the authorities. Gatherings of more than two are also prohibited in public places. The people of Kurdistan are not allowed to travel, not even to visit family or friends. The security of life and Kurds’ properties are also under threat on daily basis.

The Kurdish people are disappointed to see the disregard of international community to the human rights violations against them. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been condemned over 20 times by the UN Commission on Human Rights, yet there are no improvements in the government’s treatment of Kurds and other minorities. The recent cruelties against the peaceful demonstrations in the Kurdish cities is further material evidence of this regime’s brutality against Kurds.

The Kurds, under the leadership of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, have long struggled for freedom, democracy and the safeguarding of the rights of different ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, within a democratic and decentralized framework. It is rather unfortunate that the struggle of all the Iranian people are forgotten and allowed to be victims of the state.

Regarding the recent events in Iranian Kurdistan, we urge the United Nations to take these immediate actions:

- A UN delegation of Human Rights commission to visit Iran and Kurdistan to investigate recent events in Kurdistan

- The release of all the people detained by the Islamic Republic of Iran during the recent protests

- The injured people to be given treatment without any fear of detention or torture

- An independent inquiry to be launched, led by the UN, to investigate the recent killings and crackdown of peaceful protesters

For the sake of protecting the civilian Kurdish population and to bring stability to the region, these are the least actions we expect the United Nations and its human rights body to take.

We look forward to seeing the United Nations’ urgent actions.

Yours sincerely,

Mustafa Hejri
Secretary General
Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan

c.c.: United Nations Commission on Human Rights
