Voices From Inside Iran, Can the United States Aid the Iranian Opposition?
November 25, 2003
American Enterprise Institute
AEI
Iran remains the most influential religious and political laboratory in the Middle East. A coherent U.S. strategy toward Iran is increasingly necessary as dissent among the Iranian populace grows and evidence of both an aggressive nuclear weapons program and terrorist ties mounts. With international support, the Iranian opposition could bring about the end of the theocracy, but much of what we know about these opposition groups comes filtered through the media or intelligence analysts. Can the tyranny of the mullahs be ended, can the internal Iranian opposition take on the task, and should the United States assist opponents of the regime in any way?
AEI will host an unprecedented Iranian-American town hall meeting with leaders of the opposition inside Iran. A panel of experts and activists at AEI will join a panel of opposition leaders in Iran to discuss the future of Iranian leadership, possible paths of reform, and the potential American role in this process. Audience members at AEI will have the rare opportunity to ask opposition leaders direct questions. This meeting will be live and simultaneously broadcast via KRSI radio (Los Angeles) into Iran. (Please note that this event will take place entirely in Farsi, with simultaneous translation available for our Washington audience.)
Introduction: Danielle Pletka, AEI
Moderator: Reuel Marc Gerecht, AEI
** Please note that for security purposes, the names of panelists in Iran and Washington will not be disclosed in advance.
Start: Wednesday, December 3, 2003 11:00 AM
End: Wednesday, December 3, 2003 1:30 PM
Location: Wohlstetter Conference Center, Twelfth Floor, AEI
1150 Seventeenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036 |

This is a really good idea.
My 2cents?
Setup organisations, international unions etc. with funds for striking workers.
Use US presence in Afghanistan & Iraq to boost and or relay satellite transmissions from LA and prevent any further jamming. This is a psychological victory for the opposition. The people view successful jamming of satellite media by the Mullahs as a sign of victory for the Mullahs. Reverse it and it boosts the people psychologically! Its important for the people to know and understand that the Mullahs can be beat by better technology or more support from outside. For them, satellite is jammed = Mullahs are winning. Satellite is not jammed = they are winning!
And get RP to assume leadership more aggressively! There is no other leader, and people have been waiting for long enough. Time to accept the facts, he's the best known and recognised leader for the uprising, and the time is now.
Keep a lid on when and how to do things. No more daily broadcasts of when and where until the time is right, as in there is enough momentum to prevent a crackdown. Concentrate more on psychological victories, increasing broadcasts, building public awareness campaigns inside and outside Iran, keeping messages from the white house consistant and not conflicted.
And last but not least: Expose the EU blind support of the genocidal Mullahs through all the media broadcast into Iran on a daily basis. Hammer this one day and night! Nothing pisses off Iranians more than greedy foreignors supporting their thieving oppressive rulers, and also they need to know!
And this has been my dozari |

Spenta, very good points.. I especially agree the concept of the THE WHITEHOUSE KEEPING MESSAGES CONSISTANT & UNIFYING A PROGRESSIVE & HUMANITARIAN DRIVEN APPROACH TO THE IRANIAN SITUATION! this meeting held by the heritage foundation sounds like it may very important - possibly a KEY move in the IRanian resistance - revolution - opposition movement that we must hope and believe is united with strong elements of the American Gov. Bottomline is EUROPE would be wise - to assist as much as possible in support of the Iranian people and end the decades of assistance to one of the most terrorist REGIMES in the world. Everyone will gain from a free iran and a democratic Middle East - whether EUROPEAN govs want to believe it or not...
lets do something RIGHT! |

Bear in mind that each and any increase in US support for the rebels will automatically mean increased support (<i>sub rosa</i> and overt) for the mullahs from (old) Europe. Counter-strategies need to be planned and ready to go; for example, seeking increased support from new Europe. Nations recently freed from Marxist oppression make good partners for freedom in Iran. |

You're totally right - , most members of old Europe don't work well with others and apparently have too $$$ much to lose if they help out the Iranian people and the goals of America to support democracy in the Middle East.. So it is likley that we have already begun to intensify ties with new europe and devising plans on how the next 5, 10 years will playout with their support.. It would be wise however for Old Europe to screw the mullahs and join the Ambitions of freedom - lovers worldwide.. |

Yes, but the Mullahs will be supported regardless... the US must fund and support the Iranian resistance inside Iran!! |
