NDLO objects to National Geographic over distorting Persian Gulf on maps

Tehran, Nov 27, IRNA -- The name of the Persian Gulf originated from historical, geographical and scientific documentations and it will be a distortion to give another name for the Persian Gulf, deputy head of National Deeds and Library Organization (NDLO) Kianoush Kiani said on Saturday, protesting to the Washington-based 'National Geographic', over using a distorted name in the latest atlas it published by placing the distorted name within parentheses.

He deplored the fact that the 'National Geographic' has also used 'Qeis' instead of 'Kish' and 'Sheikh Sha'b' instead of 'Lavan Island'.

He said that the atlas published by the National Geographic is not authentic.

Kiani said that the maps drawn up by Arab cartographers Estakhri, Ibn Hoqul, Al-Moqaddassi and Edrissi all use the name of the Persian Gulf.

He said that the Persian Gulf will remain Persian forever and the desperate attempts to distort the correct name will prove futile.

Initiatives for upholding Iranian identity

LONDON, Dec 1 (IranMnaia) - Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ahmad Masjed-Jamei proposed that the Cultural-Artistic Persian Gulf Festival should be held to thwart the threat against the Iranian identity of the Persian Gulf.

According to Fars News Agency, Masjed-Jamei, who was addressing the second nationwide conference of director generals of the ministry, added, "At this juncture, we need to seriously defend our Iranian identity. We should not allow the faking of history as well as names for Iranian areas. We can defend our Iranian identity in the form of arts, literature and cinema. Thus, by holding the Cultural-Artistic Persian Gulf Festival, we can use valuable cultural traditions as the subjects of different films."

He stressed that the historic cultures and traditions as well as the Iranian identity of the Iranian edifices and islands can be conveyed through cinema.

"It is necessary that young filmmakers accomplish this objective by making attractive films for boosting the image of Iran at the national and international levels," he said.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the minister stressed that the rich potentials and capacities of country's provinces should become themes of locally produced movies so that people would know more about Iranian culture and identity.

"It is crucial that our filmmakers increase their knowledge about Iran and Iranian studies," he said.
