Thousands descend on Tehran airport to greet Nobel laureate
Thousands of residents of the Iranian capital descended on Tehran airport for the homecoming of Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, AFP reporters at the scene said.
As the area surrounding the city centre Mehrabad airport was brought to a standstill by bumper-to-bumper traffic, people were seen abandoning their vehicles and covering the final few kilometres (miles) on foot.
Most of the crowd outside the airport terminal were women, clutching bouquets of flowers and pictures of the Nobel winner, and singing patriotic hymns. Most of them were also wearing white headscarves.
An organising committee set up by supporters of Ebadi to plan festivities for her return from Paris had called for women to make the symbolic gesture of wearing white rather than the usual black preferred by the Islamic regime.
Ebadi was due to arrive in the Iranian capital some time after 9:00 pm (1730 GMT) on Iran Air flight IR732 from Paris, where she had been on a short trip when the announcement of her prestigious prize win was made on Friday.
