This past weekend Jews around the world celebrated Purim, a festivity in remembrance of the failure of a plot by Haman, an Amalekite adviser to the King of Iran, to kill all Jews throughout the Persian Empire, which at the time consisted of more than 120 provinces extending from the borders of India to those of Sudan, from central Asia to Libya. The Jews, since the reign of Cyrus the Great, had been one of the most loyal of peoples to the Iranian Kings.

According to the story of Purim, Esther, a young Iranian Jewish woman, is taken by her uncle Mordechai to the King of Persia to become part of his harem. The King, who does not know that she is Jewish, falls in love with her and makes her his Queen and the Queen of Persia.

Discovering the plot by Haman, Mordechai persuades his niece to speak to the King on behalf of the Jewish people. Esther fasts for three days to prepare herself and then approaches the King. The King of Iran discovers that Hanan had planned the killing in his (the King’s) name. He issues an order to stop the plan and his directive reaches all corners of the Empire within the three days, something unheard of given communication in those days. To make a long story short, the Jewish people are saved and Haman is hanged by the King.

Esther remained the Empress of Iran.
The King in question was, of course, Xerxes.

Isn't Xerxes the same as Khashayarshah? Greeks have a weird way of spelling/pronoucing things.

Xerxes is indeed Khashayar-Shah. Thank you for pointing it out.

Thank YOU all [for] your interest.

Oh, and Asher, your letters did not go unnoticed. I faxed them two nights ago to Canada (I used large fonts for the shorter one), when I learned that yet another Iranian, Mr. Khodadoost, was about to be deported within a few hours. He was a political activist in Iran, where he underwent such barbaric torture that he lost an eye. While in Canada, he participated in many Monarchist demonstrations. Yet this record did not stop Canada from deporting him. (I've not heard of him nor of his case since). Canada, it will be remembered, was the initiator of the UN resolution some two months ago to condemn the IRI for human rights abuse!!!

The name "Xerxes" is a transliteration to Greek. The "X" is a combo of K and S=X (also G and S). I'm taking Greek right now so I was able to see the transformation. First the Kash goes to Ksh, but since there is no Sh in Greek, it went to Ks and finally to X. The ayer is just "er". The last bit of "shah" seems to have the way of the first "sh". The "e" in the English of Xerxes is really an eta in Greek (long E). It doesn't go to the same last letter. The "s" is used at the end of Xerxes because most masculine names end in S.

Indeed, one of my favorite stories from the bible
I guess that Haman is the origin of the Ayatollahs, lol
Anyway, the Jews were saved, and "all of Shusan(the Persian kingodm) was joyous and exultation"
Persia will rise again!!!!!!!!

I understand the Biblical prophet Daniel (he of the lion's den and the "handrwiting on the wall") is also buried in Iran. Is his tomb marked? How about the apostle Thaddeus, who attempted a mission to Persia in the very early Christian era?
