Commons committee to visit Iran
Epolitix - Report Section
Oct 15, 2003
The move comes at a time when the Islamic republic is facing growing international criticism.
Authorities in Tehran are locked in dispute with the international community over Iran's possible development of nuclear weapons.
And with reformers and clerics locked in a power struggle, the country continues to face a degree of instability.
Earlier this week Iranian human rights campaigner Shirin Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in a further sign that the international community is attempting to support government reformers.
The Commons committee was invited to visit the country by its counterpart committee in the Iranian parliament.
The MPs will be flying to the country this weekend, and will visit Tehran and Isfahan before returning on October 24.
"I and my colleagues are very much looking forward to this visit, which is taking place at a vitally important time for British-Iranian relations," said committee chairman Donald Anderson.
He said there were "many significant issues for us to discuss" and added that meetings had been arranged with key people in Iranian political circles.
"No-one can doubt that Iran is a country of great geo-strategic significance, with a proud history and cultural heritage," said the Labour MP.
"Our goal is to achieve a greater understanding of the modern Islamic Republic of Iran and its people.
"We can only do this by visiting Iran, seeing it for ourselves, and holding discussions with Iranian opinion-formers and decision-takers on a wide range of issues."

Hey Stef - the euro will still probably play some games, however - things look like they're moving in the right direction! Lets cross our finger... _________________ Haleh -
