Health of imprisoned journalist causes concern, another gets jail sentence
Reporters Without Borders today voiced concern about the state of health of jailed 75-year-old journalist Siamak Pourzand, it deplored the 18-month prison sentence just passed on freelance journalist Ensafali Hedayat, and it voiced outrage at the UN Human Rights Commission's failure to condemn the Islamic Republic during its 60th session.
The organisation warned that Pourzand's life could be in great danger if he is not released immediately and given appropriate treatment. He has been paralysed for months and suffered a heart attack on 31 March that left him in a coma for 36 hours.
The refusal to free him on medical grounds suggests that the authorities have failed to learn any lesson from the death of photojournalist Zahra Kazemi on 10 July 2003 from a beating received in detention, the organisation said, calling for the release of all 12 journalists currently imprisoned in Iran.
In a continuing crackdown on freedom of expression, Hedayat was sentenced on 14 April by a court in the northwestern town of Tabriz to 18 months in prison, of which a year was for "insulting senior officials of the Islamic Republic" and six months for "propaganda against the regime."
At the same time, the title of "Best Leader of the Year" has just been awarded to Tehran state prosecutor Said Mortazavi, who as head of a "press tribunal" has been responsible for the closure of about 100 newspapers and the arrests of many journalists, and who has been directly implicated in Kazemi's death.
The award of this title to Mortazavi "would be the height of absurdity if the situation were not so tragic," Reporters Without Borders said, adding that the Islamic Republic was just highlighting its arbitrary and repressive nature by celebrating this travesty of justice.
"Amid these sinister developments, it is outrageous that none of the member countries of the UN Human Rights Commission, not even the countries of the European Union, has until now tabled a resolution condemning Iran," Reporters Without Borders added.
A freelance contributor to several independent newspapers, Pourzand has been in prison since 30 March 2003. He is bedridden with osteoarthritis of the neck and disk problems that need an operation. He went into a coma after a heart attack two weeks ago. He spent months in solitary confinement and was forced to confess on television by means of psychological pressure and torture.
Pourzand was previously arrested on 24 November 2001 and sentenced in May 2002 to eight years in prison for "actions against state security and links with monarchists and counter-revolutionaries." He had been allowed home in December 2002 before been returned to prison in March 2003.
Hedayat was arrested on 16 January 2004 on the orders of the Tabriz court when he returned from Germany. He was previously arrested on 16 June 2003 at Tabriz university while covering student protests.
With 12 journalists detained, Iran is the biggest prison for the press in the Middle East.
Plea from Banafsheh...
My father's had a massive choronary heart attack on Saturday and was finally after weeks been taken to the hospital and chained from his hands and ankles to the bed yesterday with two thug bastards standing over his head, guarding him as if he can run away. He was told by Mortazavi who is the midget fuckwit who killed Zahra Kazemi, that he would not be freed as he'll make too much noise.
I've started a reign of terror on the regime now and am bombarding them from all sides with articles and interviews from all sides, Iranian and international media. I would be grateful if you would be so kind as to help with this. He's in DESPARATE shape and needs for every single one of us to rally on his behalf now.
We must SCREAAAAAAM...PLEASE get media to write...ALSO the other political prisoner, Mehrdad Lohrasbi is in HORRIBLE shape and we need to let the world know about his condition too...

VIVA STEFANIA,
AFTER 3 HART ATTACKS IN PRISON JUST THIS MONTH, POORZAND REFUSED TO GO TO MULLAHS JAIL HOSPITAL!
SIAMAK POORZAND'S MESSEGE FROM EVIN:
"I REFUSE TO GO TO EVIN'S SPECIAL MEDICAL CENTRE! I PREFER TO DIE IN PRISON! I WILL ONLY ACCEPT MEDICAL CARE IF I CAN CHOOSE THE PLACE AND DOCTORS!"
HIS DAUGHTER TALKED TO IRANIAN MEDIA IN EXILE, ON BEHALF OF MR. POORZAND AND COVEYED HIS CONCERN:
"IRI'S SPECIAL HOSPITAL FOR PRISONERS OF EVIN AND THEIR DOCTORS ARE NOT TRUSTABLE. THEY WANT TO TAKE PRISONERS IN NEED OF MEDICAL CARE THERE IN ORDER TO ASSIST THEM WITH THEIR DEATH OUTSIDE THE PRISON! THEY WANT TO GIVE ME AIR INJECTION AND ANNOUNCE MY DEATH IN THE HOSPITAL!"
IMAGINE THE BRUTALITY OF THESE MULLAHS!
AND GOD DAMN ' UNITED NATION' FOR NOT SERIOUSLY CONDEMNING IRI'S HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE. |

Outraged at Siamak Pourzand's treatment in hospital
Reporters sans frontières - Statement
Apr 20, 2004
The organisation will hold the Iranian authorities responsible for the deterioration in the journalist's state of health
Reporters Without Borders has expressed outrage at the treatment in hospital of jailed journalist Siamak Pourzand. The 75-year-old, who is very seriously ill, is chained to his bed by his feet at Tehran's Modares hospital, where he was admitted on 18 April.
The international press freedom organisation called for his immediate release on medical grounds.
"We are revolted at the treatment of Siamak Pourzand. We have protested for years to the Iranian authorities against the harassment of this journalist. We will hold them responsible for the deterioration in his state of health," said the organisation.
"We call for Pourzand's immediate release and we support the family's request for him to be transferred to an independent private hospital," it said.
Pourzand, unable to walk and held up by two warders was brought to the prison visiting room to see his sister on 18 April. Barely able to speak, he nevertheless told her not to sign anything in connection with him. A few hours later warders told her that Pourzand had been transferred to the intensive care unit of Modares Hospital.
Pourzand, who worked as a freelance for several independent newspapers, has been imprisoned since 30 March 2003. He has been deprived of the most basic rights, including that of being able to see his own lawyer. An associate of Tehran's prosecutor-general, Said Mortazavi, has been assigned to defend him.
The journalist has spent months in solitary confinement and suffered physical and psychological torture forcing him to make a confession on television. He is suffering from arthritis in the neck and serious back problems for which he needs an operation. He was left in a coma after a heart attack on 31 March 2004, before being transferred again to Modares Hospital on 18 April.
Pourzand was arrested on 24 November 2001 then sentenced in May 2002 to eight years in prison for "undermining state security through links with monarchists and counter-revolutionaries". He was allowed out on licence on December 2002 before returning to prison in March 2003.

Imprisoned Veteran Journalist chained to bed after heart attack
SMCCDI (Information Service)
Apr 19, 2004
The imprisoned prominent veteran journalist, Siamak Pourzand aged 74, has been chained to his hospital bed following a coronary heart attack on Saturday. The heart attack happened as Mr. Pourzand was mistreated, again, by the regime's Intelligence at the Evin Political jail located in N. Tehran.
Pourzand was rushed to the Modaress Hospital, more by fear of the consequences for the regime than his life, and chained from his hands and ankles to his bed while being placed under the close watch of two strongly build Intelligence officers.
On April 7, Amnesty International issued an Urgent Action Call on the case of the veteran journalist and slammed the Islamic republic for his mistreatment.
As of today, no real articles have been allocated by "pro-reform" US newspapers, such as, New York Times or Washington Post on the case of their Iranian colleague let to be die in order to avoid disturbing the chances of the regime's reformists. Only few principled US media sources, such as, the National Review have published articles on the case of Mr. Pourzand.
The article published by the National Review was written by Banafshe Pourzand, the journalist's daughter, and entitled "Let My Father Go!".

The news about Iran's political prisoners is most disturbing these days.
IRI thugs not only inflict all kinds of physical and psychological tortures on our policical prisoners but they are also known to use CHEMICALS which induce HEART ATTACKS. This is also use as one of their "hidden ways of eliminating political activists outside prison". [Can someone find which chemical this is? I forgot its' name. heard it a few years ago.about 4 years ago we had the highest rate of heart attacks amongst the young political activists]
Just now there is another report of a yound student's heart attack in Karaj prison near Tahran: Ebrahimi the student activist was refused medical attention by IRI thugs despite doctors' recomendation for immidiate care. (a prisoner recently freed from the same jail reported today to Peik Iran -farsi news agency abroad)
HOSPITAL ORDERED NOT TO ACCEPT ANY VISITOR FOR POURZAND
peik Iran latest news on Pourzand situation
Pourzand's sister got a call today from Modares hospital, leting her know that the hospital had ORDERS from the Officials to BAN all CONTACTS to pourzand! _________________ Paayande Iran |

latest news from Tehran,
two of the prison officials have hurried in to CCU and took the CHAIN off Siamak's feet! then left immidiately!
also officials told the privat hospital that "there was a mistake, and they meant NO VISITS for the JOURNALISTS! so pourzand's only family member, his 80+ sister, could visit him if she wanst!"
Meanwhile tens of other journalists, hundreds of students, and hundreds of thousands activists are still in IRI captive, for voicing their opinion against the oppressive fascist regime.
10 other journalists are in desperate need of medical attention, and officials refuse them medical leave from Evin!

4 British Judges to be guests of mullahs notorious Judiciary for one week of sightseeing! and exchange (of who knows what)!
So that's why they were trying so hard to somehow "get rid of" loud mouth activists in Prison and send them to hospitals, or underground hidden jails!
Last week mullah's official Media showed mullah 'shahroudi' visiting Evin prison. This must have been just to make sure they WASH THE BLOODS FROM THE WALLS! before the British visit. Shahroudi supposedly only visited Evin's Library, Kitchen, and conference room!
British Judges are most likely to come back from this visit and cheeringly announce to the world that: IRAN'S JAILS SHOULD BE A MODEL FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD TO FOLLOW!'
