Tehran, Iran, Jul. 12 - A student in his teens has died under torture in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, Iran Focus has learnt.

Sohrab Arabi, 19, was arrested on 20 June during an anti-government protest.

His family had been contacted by authorities on Tuesday and told they could post bail for his release.

Arabi's mother had posted bail and had been awaiting his release.

She had protested outside Evin Prison with relatives of other detainees demanding their freedom.

Arabi's family were subsequently informed on Saturday that they should collect his dead body from Evin Prison.

The opposition Mojahedin-e Khalq says Arabi died under torture.

Arabi's case is reminiscent of that of Kianoush Asa, a post-graduate Chemistry student at Tehran's Science and Technology University, who was arrested on 15 June and died under torture on 24 June.

Since the 12 June presidential election, up to a million people have taken part in anti-government rallies in Tehran and other major cities, protesting the re-appointment of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following the election which they believe was rigged. The protestors’ demands soon shifted to once-unimaginable calls for regime change.

The regime is setting conditions on the victim families before they agree to release the bodies of the pro democracy demonstrators killed by the Basij and Hamas militia.
1. They (families of victims) should give a written statement/confession that their sons or daughters were a Basij and was killed by the pro-democracy demonstrators.

Also, those who are in jail can be released to their families if they agree to:

2. Give a written and video confession that they (Rioters) were operating under instructions by Mousavi.

The regime is trying to accomplish the following by doing so:

Reduce the number of pro-democracy fighters killed by Basij. (in my opinion number killed is in hundred, if not over a thousand).

Increase the number of Basij killed by "rioters."

Indict Mousavi for causing the violent uprising.

You connect the dots!

Families fear for those missing in Iran
By Lee Keath

Associated Press

CAIRO, Egypt - Several dozen families camp outside Iran's daunting Evin prison, trying to learn the fate of loved ones who vanished in postelection turmoil. A month into the government crackdown, the number of killed and arrested remains unknown, but human-rights groups believe the death toll is far higher than the official figure of 20.
Many of at least 500 known to have been arrested have disappeared in prisons, held in secret locations and barred from contact with families. Rights groups say that perhaps dozens of others have not been heard of since the protests and that their relatives still cannot determine whether they are locked up or dead.

Over the weekend, about 50 men and women held vigil in Tehran before the gates of Evin, the main prison for political detainees, waiting for news on whether their relatives are inside, a witness told the Associated Press. Some of the women read aloud softly from the Quran; others chanted "God is great" from time to time. But mostly they stood silent, a witness said.

"They will call you soon. Go home and wait for the phone to ring," a police officer told them.

But the families remained in place. The witness spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing retribution from authorities.

The crackdown on the huge rallies that broke out after Iran's disputed June 12 presidential election was chaotic. Not only regular police but also plainclothes Basij militiamen linked to the elite Republican Guards were involved in beating or firing on protesters, dragging some away in covered trucks to unknown locations.

The protests were sparked when opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi contended that he was the victor and that official results showing a victory for hard-line incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were fraudulent.

At the same time, security forces launched a sweep that continues weeks later against pro-reform politicians, lawyers, journalists, and women's rights and other activists. Many were arrested from their homes or offices, and the roundup effectively stripped away a senior level of the reform movement's political leadership.

It took 26 days for the family of Sohrab Aarabi, 19, to learn his fate after he disappeared during a June 15 protest. After weeks of asking at courts and prisons for him, his family was told Saturday that he had been shot in the chest during the protest and died, the New York-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported. But it was not known if he died immediately of his wounds, was hospitalized, or detained at any point.

Hadi Ghaemi, spokesman for the rights group, said there could be "dozens or even hundreds" of missing people like Aarabi, based on accounts from inside Iran that his group is investigating. "They are people who simply went off the radar screen. . . . There's no confirmation if they are in prison or dead. Their families are searching everywhere and not getting answers."

Iranian police said 20 protesters were killed in Tehran. The country's general prosecutor said last week that 2,500 people were arrested across the country and that of those, 500 remain in prison. He promised the 500 would be brought into the judicial system soon - meaning they would be put on trial or processed for release.

The government has produced no list of dead or arrested. Independent efforts to track the numbers are made even harder by families' fears of talking about their killed or detained loved ones. Opposition Web sites report that families of slain protesters are given their loved ones' bodies for burial only after promising that the funerals will be discreet and will not feature political chants.

"Many people believe that countrywide the death toll is 100 or more," Ghaemi said. "The trend coming to us is that it could be several times what the government has admitted."

Dozens of relatives of detainees gathered yesterday in Tehran to exchange news. The wives of two prominent pro-reform politicians, Mohsen Mirdamadi and Mostafa Tajzadeh, said they had received no news about their husbands.

"No official responded to us over the fate of detainees," said Mirdamadi's wife, Zahra Mojarradi. "This is a sign of lawlessness in the country."

Saeed Kamali Dehghan guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 14 July 2009 21.22 BST

The mobile phone company Nokia is being hit by a growing economic boycott in Iran as consumers sympathetic to the post-election protest movement begin targeting a string of companies deemed to be collaborating with the regime.

Wholesale vendors in the capital report that demand for Nokia handsets has fallen by as much as half in the wake of calls to boycott Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for selling communications monitoring systems to Iran.

There are signs that the boycott is spreading: consumers are shunning SMS messaging in protest at the perceived complicity with the regime by the state telecoms company, TCI. Iran's state-run broadcaster has been hit by a collapse in advertising as companies fear being blacklisted in a Facebook petition. There is also anecdotal evidence that people are moving money out of state banks and into private banks.

Nokia is the most prominent western company to suffer from its dealings with the Iranian authorities. Its NSN joint venture with Siemens provided Iran with a monitoring system as it expanded a mobile network last year. NSN says the technology is standard issue to dozens of countries, but protesters believe the company could have provided the network without the monitoring function.

Siemens is also accused of providing Iran with an internet filtering system called Webwasher.

"Iranians' first choice has been Nokia cellphones for several years, partly because Nokia has installed the facility in the country. But in the past weeks, customers' priority has changed," said Reza, a mobile phone seller in Tehran's Big Bazaar.

"Since the news spread that NSN had sold electronic surveillance systems to the Iranian government, people have decided to buy other company's products although they know that Nokia cellphones function better with network coverage in Iran."

Some Tehran shops have removed Nokia phones from their window displays. Hashem, another mobile phone vendor, said: "I don't like to lose my customers and now people don't feel happy seeing Nokia's products. We even had customers who wanted to refund their new Nokia cellphones or change them with just another cellphone from any other companies.

"It's not just a limited case to my shop – I'm also a wholesaler to small shops in provincial markets, and I can say that there is half the demand for Nokia's product these days in comparison with just one month ago, and it's really unprecedented. People feel ashamed of having Nokia cellphones," he added.

News of the boycott has appeared on the front page of Iranian pro-reform papers such as Etemad-e Melli, owned by the reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi. Hadi Heidari, a prominent Iranian cartoonist, has published an image of a Nokia phone on a No Entry traffic sign.

A Nokia spokeswoman refused to comment on the company's sales in Iran.

The Iranian authorities are believed to have used Nokia's mobile phone monitoring system to target dissidents. Released prisoners have revealed that the authorities were keeping them in custody on the basis of their SMS and phone calls archive, which was at officials' disposal.

One Iranian journalist who has just been released from detention said: "I always had this impression that monitoring calls is just a rumour for threatening us from continuing our job properly, but the nightmare became real when they had my phone calls – conversations in my case.

"And the most unbelievable thing for me is that Nokia sold this system to our government. It would be a reasonable excuse for Nokia if they had sold the monitoring technology to a democratic country for controlling child abuse or other uses, but selling it to the Iranian government with a very clear background of human rights violence and suppression of dissent, it's just inexcusable for me. I'd like to tell Nokia that I'm tortured because they had sold this damn technology to our government."

NSN spokesman Ben Roome said: "As in every other country, telecoms networks in Iran require the capability to lawfully intercept voice calls. In the last two years, the number of mobile subscribers in Iran has grown from 12 million to over 53 million, so to expand the network in the second half of 2008 we were required to provide the facility to intercept voice calls on this network."

In other sectors, state-run TV has also been targeted by protesters who have listed products advertised on its channels and urged supporters to join a boycott. Companies are running scared, and viewers have noticed the number of commercials plummet.

"We don't have many choices to show and continue our protests. They don't let us go out, they have killed many, we are threatened to text people or distribute emails, they have summoned people who shout Allahu Akbar ['God is great'] on rooftops at nights, so we need to look for new ways," said Shahla, a 26-year-old Iranian student.

"I can obviously see on the TV that they are facing an [advertising] crisis. This at least shows them how angry people are," she added.

The SMS boycott, meanwhile, has apparently forced TCI into drastic price hikes. The cost of an SMS has doubled in recent days. Protesters view the move as a victory.

Iran can monitor calls with our technology: Nokia Siemens
Jun 29, 2009

HELSINKI (AFP) — Finnish-German telecom equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) said Monday technology it sold to Iran in 2008 could be used to monitor calls, but denied claims it can be used for web censorship.

A petition calling for a boycott against Nokia has begun circulating over the Internet, claiming the technology had helped Iran to monitor mobile phones and read emails during the recent post-election protests.

Two US senators are calling for a boycott of European firms they say are helping the Iranian government snoop on its citizens.

That will be Nokia Siemens Networks, we assume, which has already confessed it sold technology to Iran conforming to 3GPP and ETSI standards which require mobile networks have a lawful intercept capability. Mobile networks in the US, and everywhere else, are required to provide a way for police and others to listen to phone calls. The situation is not different in Iran.

Two Senators - Republican Lindsey Graham and Democratic Charles E Schumer are backing legislation which calls for the US government "to identify foreign companies that export sensitive technology to Iran. Those companies would not be allowed to apply for procurement contracts with the US government, or renew expiring ones, unless they first terminated those exports to Iran."

Taraneh M. is a 28 year old trainee beautician who was arrested more than two weeks ago by security forces on the fringe of the rally on 7th tir (28th june).

Reports indicate that her family were told that she was in danger due to damage to her anus and womb.

According to reports, this young woman was arrested by plain clothes security forces at 6 pm after participating in the 7th tir ceremony at Ghoba mosque. While after interrogation all other detainees were brought to Nobonyad police station by basij and intelligence agents, the plain clothes agents kept Taraneh in a building near Hosseinie Ershad.

According to witnesses, while most of the participants in the ceremony were dressed in normal clothes and trainers, Taraneh was wearing chic clothes and high-heeled shoes, and caught the interrogators’ attention because of her hairstyle, make-up and beauty.

When Taraneh’s family, who live in Jeyhoun Street in West Tehran, went to look for her at Nobonyad police station, the officers at the station said they didn’t know anything about her. But the other detainees told the family that Taraneh was in custody with the Basijis and hadn’t been turned over to the police station. This made the family even more worried.

The probability the she had been gang raped increased when a couple of days later an unidentified person telephoned the family and said that after an “accident” Taraneh had been admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Karaj because of tears in her womb and anus.

After several days of searching, her family at last found Taraneh’s car, which had been parked near Ghoba mosque, and they went to inquire at Imam Khomeini hospital in Karaj. One of the nurses confirmed that an unconscious girl matching Taraneh’s description had been brought in by plain clothes forces and had been removed again after a couple of hours. This girl’s particulars hadn’t been entered in the hospital records.

This increases the suspicion that Taraneh M. may have been raped by the Basijis and security forces and may even have died. But her family won’t yet accept this and hope that if they follow the advice of the police, i.e. to keep quiet, they will be able to trace their daughter.

Taraneh’s father, who works in dental prosthetics, has suffered a heart attack since the visit to the hospital and is ill, and her mother also evades questions about her daughter’s fate asked by relatives and friends.

Still, one of Taraneh’s close friends told us that, considering the information in hand, she was very worried that Taraneh was dead. She said between the time a girl answering Taraneh’s description had reportedly been in the hospital and her arrest several days had passed. Also the mention of a torn anus and womb by the unidentified caller indicates that Taraneh may have died being gang raped by the Basijis and security forces.

We have more information by other sources which increase the worries over Taraneh’s fate. However we will wait until we have spoken to Taraneh’s family before releasing this information. Meanwhile we ask the media and human and women’s rights organizations for support.

Taraneh Mousavi, 28, was among hundreds arrested on June 19th, 2009 in Iran's post-election aftermath. Like many of the detained, tortured, beaten and murdered citizens who took part in civil protests against the election results, there has been no news of her whereabouts.

It is reported that after the elapse of three weeks, an anonymous regime agent has contacted Taraneh's mother, stating that she has been hospitalized in Imam Khomeini's Hospital in Karaj.

The hospitalization, the agent reported, was due to rupturing of her womb and anus, in what was presented as an "unfortunate accident" in the vicinity o the Sharia'ti Street.

According to a witness account who was arrested with her, she was detained in the vicinity of Ghaba Mosque in the Sharia"ti Street in Tehran and was later transported to the Evin Prison.

The witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated that she became the subject to many physical and emotional abuse and ongoing torture. Islamist militia blocked any form of contact between Taraneh and her parents inside the prison.

According to witnesses, while most of the participants in the ceremony were dressed in normal clothes and trainers, Taraneh was wearing chic clothes and high-heeled shoes, and caught the interrogators' attention because of her hairstyle, make-up and beauty.

When Taraneh's family, who live in Jeyhoun Street in West Tehran, went to look for her at Nobonyad police station, the officers at the station said they didn't know anything about her. But the other detainees told the family that Taraneh was in custody with the Basijis and hadn't been turned over to the police station. This made the family even more worried.

The probability the she had been gang raped increased when a couple of days later an unidentified person telephoned the family and said that after an "accident" Taraneh had been admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Karaj because of tears in her womb and anus.

After several days of searching, her family at last found Taraneh's car, which had been parked near Ghoba mosque, and they went to inquire at Imam Khomeini hospital in Karaj. One of the nurses confirmed that an unconscious girl matching Taraneh's description had been brought in by plain clothes forces and had been removed again after a couple of hours. This girl's particulars hadn't been entered in the hospital records.

This increases the suspicion that Taraneh M. may have been raped by the Basijis and security forces and may even have died. But her family won't yet accept this and hope that if they follow the advice of the police, i.e. to keep quiet, they will be able to trace their daughter.

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/17/latest-updates-on-post-election-protests-in-iran/#t8h36m

The main slogans were “Baradar’e basiji chera Baradr Koshi.” The speaker after Rafi was urging people to shout “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” People responded in mass by shouting “Death to Russia” and “Death to the Dictator.”
............

Today, of course, there were tens of thousands of people outside, with prayer-goers struggling to still go inside. I heard “Marg bar Rusya” (Down with Russia) and later was told that even “Marg bar Chin” (Down with China) was chanted.

.......................

Since people couldn’t break out into chants in front of the thug squads, they had to resort to codified slogans. “Marg bar Diktator” (”Death to the Dictator”) alternated with “Marg bar Russiye” (”Death to Russia”) — this was a sly jab at Ahmadinejad-Khamenei due to their alleged alliance with Russia in orchestrating the vote coup (Medvedev had promptly congratulated the fraudulent win and welcomed Ahmadinejad to a regional summit after the elections; Russia is widely believed to give behind-the-scenes support to Ahmadinejad’s government, bypassing sanctions, selling arms, helping build the nuclear plant in Bushehr, etc.)
