Young Iranians pay for Democracy with their lives

The civilized world is shocked by hearing the news that dozens of Iranian youth are being murdered by their own government during peaceful demonstrations in the streets of Tehran.
While most of the foreign journalists were ordered out of the country in preparation of the ongoing ‘coup de farce!’ of the regime, subsequent to its fraudulent presidential election, this particular crime is still being perpetrated in front of international news cameras. Thus, the regime has no possibility of hiding it.
This particular outrageous violation of demonstrator’s fundamental rights is to be added to the notorious beating, killing and pillage of Tehran and Isfahan Universities’ residence halls which seems to have become a nightly routine for armed juvenile delinquents called ‘Basijis.’ Theses notorious hooligans are paid and protected by the government to attack defenseless students and other civilian protesters.

For a regime that has committed thousands of crimes against its own youth over the past 30 years, this latest transgression against the lives and rights of the Iranian people is considered business as usual. This is the same regime that in 1988 mass murdered thousands of political prisoners within the walls of Evin and other state prisons without ever having to give account to any national or international tribunal. What makes current incident special is due to focused international attention on the region in general and on Iran in particular.

While the current turmoil is routine for the regime, the international reaction to the events has not been routine. The adverse reactions to the behavior of the ruling clergy has been punctual and severe. The words of admonishment for the government and support for the people has been forthcoming from all important quarters of international community. The Presidents of the United States, the European Union and France, the Secretary General of the United Nations, The Chancellor of Germany, as well as many other leaders and spokesmen of countries and human rights organizations have joined voices in condemning both the killing of peaceful demonstrators as well as the fraudulent elections.

All of this is due to the sacrifices of those who have given their lives and those courageous young Iranians who continue to resist by risking their lives in order to establish democracy and human rights in their tortured homeland

Payam Akhavan, a former UN war crimes prosecutor at The Hague and co-founder of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre, is working on a petition to send to the UN Security Council and The Hague - that will look into Iran's post-election violence.

In an interview to Al Jazeera from New York, Akhavan said: "the Iranian regime can't continue to suppress people unless they resort to mass murder".

To: Prosecutors of the International Court of Justice

Dear Madams/Sirs, Prosecutors of the International Court of Justice,

Based on the constitution of the Islamic regime ruling Iran, Ali Khamenei, the leader designated as The Absolute Theocratic Guardianship, has unlimited authority, his commands must be unconditionally enforced and he cannot be challenged or opposed in any way. As such, Ali Khamenei acts in nothing more than in his own self-interest, in dereliction of his duty to safeguarding the lives, property and dignity of the people of Iran and maniacally runs rough shod over our nation; and with the aid of his oppressive henchmen, they add to the multitudes of the tortured and murdered of this land. This is a dictator whose inept and brutal policies has stiffled any expression of dissent and has squarely put our country in the path of destruction.

This suffocation and continued injustice has drowned out the voices of protesting groups such as the legions of workers, teachers, students, writers, journalists, bloggers, etc. Each day the number of the executed and tortured, in the prisons increases, all simply as a result of differences of opinion or opposition to the regime’s course of action.

As a result, in view of the recent warrant issued by your court, in the case of Omar al-Bashir, the criminal leader of The Sudan, we the below signatories, call upon you to also investigate crimes committed by Ali Khamenei, and to also issue a warrant for his arrest.

Sincerely,

To: To the people of the world!

Mr. Ban Ki-Moon,
Noble Ladies and Gentlemen; heads of the democratically elected governments of the world,

Over the past few days, following the fraudulent Iranian presidential “elections”, the entire world has been witnessing the uprising of the freedom loving people of Iran against deception, injustice and tyranny of the rulers of the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian people have been demonstrating their outrage against their repressive rulers by the millions and in epic levels throughout Iran. After 30 years of oppressive and despotic rule by the clerics, the great and heroic people of Iran are now determined not to allow their intelligence to be insulted any longer and have decided that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and are unequivocally calling for an end to the tyrant rule of the clerics in Iran. The Islamic rulers and the clergy not only have no respect for the will of the Iranian people, but have demonstrated their truly fascist essence by resorting to the most barbaric and inhumane crack downs on people’s peaceful demonstrations.

In their quest for achieving their goal, which is for a free, democratic and secular Iran, the Iranian people are being confronted by the most brutal and barbaric attacks by the state police, security forces and armed thugs organised by Ahmadinejad’s government. Thousands of protestors have been brutally assaulted and beaten up and many have been killed in the most vulgar manners during the peaceful rallies in Tehran and other major cities.

There are hundreds of pictorial evidences recorded on still and movie cameras showing the barbaric behaviours of the Islamic Republic’s security forces, which in time shall be presented to the International Courts of Law as hard evidence in order to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice. The ultimate responsibility of these crimes will be put upon the rulers of the regime, in particular, Mr. Khamenei himself; the so called “Supreme Leader”!

We, the undersigned, draw your immediate attention to the following:

• Any State with such measures of brutality and savagery against its own people can not possibly be tolerated and hence be worthy of recognition by the world community.

• At these critical moments, the Iranian people need the support of the world community who have been watching the ongoing events in Iran with dismay.

• The free and democratic nations can not possibly tolerate such barbaric behaviours of a repressive state against the will its own people.

• The Islamic Republic of Iran has been and continues to be in gross and intolerable violation of all international conventions to which they are party to and have been signatory to adhere to.

• After the recent events in Iran, and the barbaric response of the Islamic government to the protestors in the aftermath of the rigged “elections”, the world community can not possibly consider the Islamic Republic’s government as the true and legitimate representative of the great Iranian nation.

• We demand the United Nations to expel the Islamic Republic of Iran from the United Nations and void its membership in protest for its blatant violation of human rights in Iran. There are hundreds of undeniable pictures and video clips to substantiate this fact.

• Equally well, we ask all the Free States and governments of the world to expel the Islamic Republic’s so called “Diplomats” from their countries and to close down its embassies in their respective countries to show their denunciation of Islamic Republic’s inhumane behaviour against its people and to support the legitimate demands of the freedom seeking people of Iran.

We expect the free world community to stand beside the Iranian people during these critical times and to show their support for their freedom seeking struggle during these decisive moments.

Sincerely,

The home of Neda Agha Soltan

The Iranian authorities have ordered the family of Neda Agha Soltan out of their Tehran home after shocking images of her death were circulated around the world.

Neighbours said that her family no longer lives in the four-floor apartment building on Meshkini Street, in eastern Tehran, having been forced to move since she was killed. The police did not hand the body back to her family, her funeral was cancelled, she was buried without letting her family know and the government banned mourning ceremonies at mosques, the neighbours said.

"We just know that they [the family] were forced to leave their flat," a neighbour said. The Guardian was unable to contact the family directly to confirm if they had been forced to leave.

The government is also accusing protesters of killing Soltan, describing her as a martyr of the Basij militia. Javan, a pro-government newspaper, has gone so far as to blame the recently expelled BBC correspondent, Jon Leyne, of hiring "thugs" to shoot her so he could make a documentary film.

Soltan was shot dead on Saturday evening near the scene of clashes between pro-government militias and demonstrators, turning her into a symbol of the Iranian protest movement. Barack Obama spoke of the "searing image" of Soltan's dying moments at his press conference yesterday.

Amid scenes of grief in the Soltan household with her father and mother screaming, neighbours not only from their building but from others in the area streamed out to protest at her death. But the police moved in quickly to quell any public displays of grief. They arrived as soon as they found out that a friend of Soltan had come to the family flat.

In accordance with Persian tradition, the family had put up a mourning announcement and attached a black banner to the building.

But the police took them down, refusing to allow the family to show any signs of mourning. The next day they were ordered to move out. Since then, neighbours have received suspicious calls warning them not to discuss her death with anyone and not to make any protest.

A tearful middle-aged woman who was an immediate neighbour said her family had not slept for days because of the oppressive presence of the Basij militia, out in force in the area harassing people since Soltan's death.

The area in front of Soltan's house was empty today. There was no sign of black cloths, banners or mourning. Secret police patrolled the street.

"We are trembling," one neighbour said. "We are still afraid. We haven't had a peaceful time in the last days, let alone her family. Nobody was allowed to console her family, they were alone, they were under arrest and their daughter was just killed. I can't imagine how painful it was for them. Her friends came to console her family but the police didn't let them in and forced them to disperse and arrested some of them. Neda's family were not even given a quiet moment to grieve."

Another man said many would have turned up to show their sympathy had it not been for the police.

"In Iran, when someone dies, neighbours visit the family and will not let them stay alone for weeks but Neda's family was forced to be alone, otherwise the whole of Iran would gather here," he said. "The government is terrible, they are even accusing pro-Mousavi people of killing Neda and have just written in their websites that Neda is a Basiji (government militia) martyr. That's ridiculous – if that's true why don't they let her family hold any funeral or ceremonies? Since the election, you are not able to trust one word from the government." A shopkeeper said he had often met Soltan, who used to come to his store.

"She was a kind, innocent girl. She treated me well and I appreciated her behaviour. I was surprised when I found out that she was killed by the riot police. I knew she was a student as she mentioned that she was going to university. She always had a nice peaceful smile and now she has been sacrificed for the government's vote-rigging in the presidential election."

A doctor who claims he tried to save Iranian martyr Neda Soltan says she was shot by a pro-government milita gunman.

Neda Soltan didn't fear death, friends say

An Iranian doctor who claims he tried to save Neda Soltan as the young Iranian protester bled to death on the streets of Tehran said Thursday that she apparently was shot by a member of Iran’s pro-government Basij militia.

Video images of 26-year-old Soltan, with blood pouring from her mouth and nose as a few Iranian men struggled to save her, have became a powerful symbol of the protests taking place over Iran’s disputed presidential election.

Dr. Arash Hejazi told the British Broadcasting Corp. that he was one of those men who tried to save her.

Hejazi, who is currently studying in England, said he was briefly visiting friends in Tehran when he heard the protest Soltan was taking part in and went to see it.

Suddenly, he said, police began to fire tear gas and race forward on motorcycles.

"We heard a gunshot. Neda was standing one meter (yard) away from me. I turned back and I saw blood gushing out of Neda’s chest," he said.

“We ran to her and lay her on the ground. I saw the bullet wound just below the neck."

Hejazi said he tried to stop the bleeding, but she soon died.

The protesters first thought the gunshot had come from a nearby rooftop, but later spotted an armed member of Iran’s Basij militia on a motorcycle, and stopped and disarmed him, the doctor said.

The man appeared to admit shooting Soltan, shouting “I didn’t want to kill her,” but the furious protesters confiscated his identity card and took photographs of him before letting him go, Hejazi said.

Thousands of Iranians have protested since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in a June 12 vote that the opposition claims was marred by massive fraud.

Pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi has said he was the true winner and has pushed for a new election, despite refusal by the Iranian government, which has promised to crack down on further protests.

Hejazi, who said he now primarily works at a publishing house he has created, said he knows he is putting himself in jeopardy by talking about what happened and that he may not be able to return to Iran.

"They are going to denounce what I am saying. They are going to put so many things on me. I have never been in politics. I am jeopardizing my situation because of the innocent look in her (Neda’s) eyes," he said.

But, the doctor told the BBC, "It was a tough decision to make to come out and talk about it, but she died for a cause. She was fighting for basic rights ... I don’t want her blood to have been shed in vain."

He added: “She died on the streets to say something."

Mullahs Cannot Stop the Persian Reawakening

"Alicia, Islamic Tazi Mullahs want nothing more than the destruction of Iranian culture. To call the mullahs leaders of Iran is an insult to Iranians and their culture. The term Islamic and republic are not compatible -- for Islam gets its authority from Allah and Sharia law and the republic from the people. To say "Iranian election" like the western media does is an intellectual crime against the Iranian people. The prerequisite of an election is the freedom for people to choose their candidates and not a handful of fascistic Mullahs. Any negotiations with Tazi Mullahs occupying Iran, is an attempt to further defraud the great people of Iran -and the people know it. Obama, should have directed his message to the people rather than legitimizing the Mullahs by calling them leaders." Babak Iran- March, 2009

Such as these Lebanese Hezbollah MERCENARIES
who are among some 15,000 imported by Mojtaba Khamenei (Supreme Ruler's son) to LETHALLY suppress demonstrators and senior clerics who oppose him and his father and their alliance/coup with Ahmadi-Nejad the Turd.

Aircraft bringing in the mercenary Hezbollaha and other Palestinians were landing at the Southern port of Mahshahr.

The bearded man pictured above in a green shirt holding a walkie-talkie, patrolling the streets of Tehran is Hezbollah of Lebanon's Hussein Monif Ashmar a leading operational member of the terror group with responsibilities including organizing suicide attacks. His photo was identified by a now exiled former member of Quds (islamic iran's Special Forces) : Amir Farshad Ebrahimi.

Protesters have captured, identified and released Arabic speaking suppression members from the following countries: Somalia, Sudan, Oman, Syria, Yemen and Palestinians.

Venezuelan security outfits were sent recently by Hugo Chavez to protect Ahmadinejad and Khamenei since they no longer trust Iranian security personnel.

Interestingly in debates before the upheaval, Mehdi Karoubi had been puzzled by the amount of aid Ahmadinejad had sent to Hugo Chavez

Remember when Ahmadi-Nejad spent nearly $650,000 (EACH ) on three bomb sniffing dogs (Alsatians) to guard his office? To the horror of his staff and visitors who consider dogs as utterly unclean and not to be touched or be sniffed by them.

Usually in foreign policy circles the use or entering of foreign troops into any land signals a greater strife, and usually heralds war. This information is in the least, disturbing.

Iran's sovereignty has been compromised, and will cause a dangerous imbalance in the geopolitics of the middle east.

The use of Palestinians goes back to before the 1979 revolution when Yasser Arafat had flown militias to help in the street killings of the Islamic revolution. AND CARRY OUT EXECUTIONS in the prisons.

Arafart received billions of dollars from Khomeini after the victory of the Islamic revolution. And the contents of the homes of the rich and famous which Khomeini, who had spent his life sitting on a cushion on the floor granted him persmission to plunder. Convoys of some 200 trucks a day, loaded with sometimes priceless art and museum pieces were trekking out if Iran and back.

When this dried up Arafart told Khomeini he had to return to run things at home and his men forced young Iranian vigilantes to start doing the executions themselves or be shot down by the Palestinians. Once they had executed a few dozen, combined with having watched it happen, soon inured them.

See how easily and informally they execute in islamic iran

A lot of people in Iran believe that the individual who is most responsible for orchestrating Ahmadinejad's selection was Khamenei's son Mojtaba Khamenei and he is in direct control of Basij

Britain has reportedly Frozen $1.6B assets of Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran's supreme leader

Mojtaba Khamenei

Payvand.com - Unsourced reports are circulating that British banks have frozen $1.6 billion in funds belonging to Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the supreme leader. This supposed affront is cited as another reason for displeasure with Britain in high places in Iran.

"The total assets frozen in the UK under the EU (European Union) and UN sanctions against Iran are approximately 976,110,000 pounds," Ian Pearson, Britain's Economic Secretary to the Treasury said in a written statement to parliament on Thursday.

The statement did not give any further details.

Mojtaba Khamenei has emerged as one of the driving forces behind the government's crackdown, diplomats and observers said, as reported in a Guardian article published on June 22nd. Also, according to some Iran analysts, Khamenei, 70, is maneuvering to position his son as his successor.

The Basij (Persian: بسيج) (literally "Mobilization"; also Basij-e Mostaz'afin, literally "Mobilization of the Oppressed"; officially Nirouye Moqavemate Basij, literally "Mobilisation Resistance Force") is a paramilitary volunteer militia founded by the order of the Ayatollah Khomeini in November 1979. The Basij are subordinate to, and receive their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

The force has been widely used in order to control the widescale protests following the 2009 Iranian presidential election. According to Iranian state-run media reports, eight of the 20 killed during the protests were members of Basij.

Consisting of young Iranians who volunteer to join this force, the Basij are most notable for their loyalty to the supreme leader Khamenei. Currently Basij serve as an auxiliary force engaged in activities such as internal security as well law enforcement auxiliary, the providing of social service, organizing of public religious ceremonies, and more controversially morals policing and the suppression of dissident gatherings. They have a local organization in almost every city in Iran.

Quote:

An Iranian’s Woman’s View on Peaceful Islamic Laws

My name is Shiva Mahbobi. I am a women’s rights activist from Iran and a member of the public relations of the International Committee against Stoning (ICAS).

First of all, I would like to thank the organizers for inviting me to this conference and also would like to thank all of you for being here.

24 years ago when the Islamic regime of Iran announced that all women must wear the Islamic dress code (Hijab), thousands of women came to the streets of Tehran to protest against this law. They were chanting “Women’s Rights are Universal” and “we didn’t take part in the revolution to go backwards”. They said NO to the compulsory Islamic dress code and NO to the Islamic rules and policies. Since then women in Iran have been fighting against the Islamic laws and traditions; they have fought against sexual apartheid, and have fought for freedom and equality every day of their lives. I am sure you would do the same thing if you were told starting from tomorrow:

You will be separated from men in all public places including universities and transportation
You have to obey the Islamic dress code and you will be punished if you don’t
You have no right to travel without the permission of the male of the family
You have no right to divorce and if you get divorce you won’t have the custody of your children
You will face imprisonment, flogging and paying fine if you were arrested while walking with your boyfriend or wore make-up
You have no place to go and seek refuge if your husband abuses you, beats you up or rapes you
You have no right to work if your husband disagrees
You will be subjected to oppression and discrimination in all aspects of your life.
You will be stoned to death if you have sexual relation out of marriage.

In Iran where an Islamic state is governing the country and law is based on Islam, stoning which is torture and a gradual death and the most inhumane and horrifying form of punishment is carried out for women and men (mostly women) for committing extra-marital relationship. Stoning has been officially introduced in the country’s penal codes.

According to article 102 of Islamic Penal Code, A man is buried to his waist, while a woman is buried up to her chest and stoned to death.

Article 104 defines the size of stones and stipulates: In stoning to death, the stones should not be so large that the person dies upon being hit by one or two of them, neither should they be so small that they cannot be called a stone.

An eye-witness in Iran has described a scene of stoning in the city called Gohardasht in Iran:

“To the astonishment of the people, the two sentenced were dragged to the designated area; their hands were tightly tied behind their backs and their whole bodies were covered with white shroud. Then the mercenaries dug holes in the hill of soil and the sentenced were covered up to their waists in dirt. In order to prevent the sentenced from escaping, water was added to the soil. Then the cleric ordered the stoning. Within the first few seconds, the two sentenced lost control because of the intensity of pain; they bent to the ground while blood leaked out from under their grave clothes. After a few minutes, the cleric announced that the “evils” had died and proclaimed the end to the stoning. “

It’s hard to believe that cruel laws such as stoning are still happening in the 21 century and in fact it’s the law of a country.

Since the Islamic regime of Iran came to the power, tens of women and men, again mostly women, have been stoned to death and many including Ferdos.B, Shahnaz and Sima have been sentenced to stoning and are currently in prison.

During these 24 years, women have been able to push back the misogynist Islamic regime and some of its laws. One of these laws is stoning. In the light of the massive campaigning and protests both inside and outside the country against stoning, in December of 2002 the Islamic regime of Iran had to announce the suspension of stoning law. They suspended stoning not because they believe it is an inhuman law, but because they believe it gives the Iranian regime a bad image internationally. Therefore, soon after, they announced execution as a form of punishment for sexual relationship out of marriage instead of stoning. In mid summer of 2003, the execution of Shahnaz, 35 years-old Iranian woman, was finalized and she is awaiting her sentence to be carried out. Prior to Shahnaz in the beginning of winter of 2003, another woman by the name of Khair-ol-Nessa was sentenced to execution.

When we talk about women’s situation in Iran and their rights in conferences, we sometimes face questions like, isn’t this the culture of people in Iran? Aren’t women in Iran or other Islamic-stricken countries happy to live in that condition? Etc. These questions are mostly raised by the defenders of cultural relativism. Cultural relativism bases people’s rights on where they were born and therefore has double standard for human rights. This idea believes that, what is happening to women in the Islamic-stricken countries such as Iran is acceptable by women and it is in fact part of their culture. They say, stoning and beating women is part of the culture of these countries and women have chosen to be treated like this. This idea respects all cultures no matter how reactionary they are. They don’t realized or don’t want to realize that, this is in fact the culture of the Islamic regime that is imposed on people in Iran. I have started my speech with an example of the protest of women to prove that woman in Iran have always been protesting against the Islamic rules. More over, I believe, to abolish stoning we have to address the root of it, which is the Islamic rule. Nowadays, political Islam is one the main reason for women’s misery in the Islamic-stricken countries therefore, the first step to save millions of women in these countries from stoning, abuse and violence is separation of state from religion and bringing down the political Islam from power.

Finally, what we can do about this situation and how can we help?We are all here because we do care about women’s rights and we are against the brutal law of stoning. This conference and other conferences such as this are a good opportunity to find out about women’s situation in different countries but more importantly, these conferences are good opportunity to build international solidarity in defense of women’s rights as well. At the moment three women Ferdos.B, Sima and Shahnaz are in prison in Iran and waiting to be killed and as I mentioned previously, Shahnaz’s sentence has been finalized. Right now the ICAS has two campaigns, one is to save Amina Lawal in Nigeria and one is to save Shahnaz in Iran. You can join this committee and its campaigns to save the lives of these two women and to abolish stoning law in all the Islamic-stricken countries. No matter where we are from, stoning a woman to death is an insult to every one of us and to humanity.

We have a resolution condemning stoning in all Islamic-stricken countries. I would like to urge the conference to adopt this resolution and send it to the respective governments.

We need to show the world that we will not stand idle while women are massacred.

We must show to the world that we are united to defend women’s rights.

Women’s rights are universal.

Together we can make a difference.

Thank you

Historians and archaeologists are entrusted with the task of examining and narrating the past. These tasks require the historian to be as balanced and neutral as possible in his or her writings. The events of June 2009 have certainly put that requirement (upon this writer at least) to the test.

What has attracted the attention of the world media has been the assertive role of Iranian women in the political protests, especially the young student, Neda Agha-Soltan, who was killed on June 20, 2009 as she engaged in political protests in Tehran.

The young Iranian girl Neda Agha-Soltan who was shot by security forces on Tehran’s Karegar Street on June 20, 2009. Neda represents the immortal spirit of the women of Iran who have often been at the forefront of political and social change across centuries of Iranian history.

Though fallen, Neda represents the immortal spirit of the women of Iran. This article aims to highlight the importance, leadership and deeply rooted courage of Iranian women throughout the history of Iran since ancient times. The women of Iran have been participants and engines of civil and political change throughout Iran’s ancient history. Below are a few examples that highlight the role tghat Iranian women have played in the history of Iran.
