Iran: It’s Time for a Progressive Revolution

By Amil Imani

The time for a progressive revolution has arrived. The majority of Iranian people refuse to be fooled and intimidated any longer. They refuse to follow orders from the beasts of Allah currently ruling Iran. Iranians have recognized the fundamental weakness of their oppressors. With a little help here and little help there, they can be transformed overnight from seemingly subdued and helpless sheep into mighty lions.

It is time for the Iranians to strike, gather forces, organize and especially demonstrate in the streets in increasing numbers, even in the face of massive, gruesome, bloody repression by the Islamic rulers who still have a powerful armed apparatus at their disposal. It is time to unleash the wrath of the Iranian people on the Islamic zealots. It is time to become even more defiant and end the barbaric theocratic regime by massively participating in a progressive revolution.

AP - Gunfire from a pro-government militia killed one man and wounded several others Monday after hundreds of thousands of chanting opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marched in central Tehran to support their pro-reform leader in his first public appearance since disputed elections.

Today the world is witnessing the demonstrated anger of millions of Iranians against a regime that denies their most basic rights, including the right to choose leaders who could improve their abysmal condition.

There is no exit from this condition, so long as one man appropriates onto himself the “power of god” and controls the judiciary, the media, the security forces and, through direct and indirect appointees dictates the only candidates claiming to represent an impoverished and disenfranchised people.

Today I stand united with my fellow Iranians and call for the end of the Islamic Republic, or any other prefix in front of the name of my beloved Iran that indicates theocracy or any other form of disregard for democratic and human rights.

I caution the world that offering any incentives or “carrots” to the theocracy under these circumstances is an affront to the people of Iran. This is not a time for short-sighted, self-defeating tactical games. This is the time for the free world to stand true to its principals and support the people of Iran’s quest for democracy and human rights.

Tehran, Iran, Jun. 16 – At least seven people were killed in Tehran during a massive anti-government rally on Monday, state television reported on Tuesday.

"Seven people killed near illegal Tehran rally", said a headline by the state-run English-language television channel Press TV. It based its report on an earlier announcement in Iranian state radio.

It did not identify those who had been killed.

The report said several people were wounded when "hooligans" attacked a compound believed to have belonged to the para-military Bassij force.

The opposition group People’s Mujahedin says that at least 10 people have been killed by security forces in Iran since the election which it denounced as a “sham”.

It said one student, one woman and one man were killed by security forces during clashes earlier this week in the southern city of Shiraz.

Up to a million people took part in anti-government rallies in Tehran and other major cities on Monday, protesting the re-appointment of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following a presidential election contest which they believe was rigged.

Venting their anger at the clerical establishment, many young protestors in Tehran chanted “death to the dictator” and some held up banners calling for ‘democracy’. Iran does not allow UN-supervised elections.

For a service that limits users to 140 characters, Twitter is finding its influence growing worldwide. The San Francisco company Monday delayed a crucial maintenance operation to accommodate the high volume of information flowing about the explosive election protests in Iran.

People both inside and outside Iran have been sending short text messages about the violence and civil disobedience that has engulfed the nation's capital, Tehran, for the last two days. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has defended his reelection last week, but the protests have grown more intense.

Open letter to the people of Iran

by Nazanin Afshin-Jam June 16, 2009

To my fellow compatriots, the brave Iranian men and women, who for the last few days have unleashed a spirit of energy that has been repressed for 30 years under an oppressive and undemocratic regime...

... we love, admire and support you.

Oh how we, living in exile, wish we could be at your side at this critical juncture in history.

Please keep the momentum going with acts of nonviolent civil disobedience. Like a snowball in motion, once underway, cannot be stopped by anyone.

The eyes of the world are watching your every step and are behind you. World leaders are closely observing the country proclaiming their desire to see the wishes of the Iranian people met. They simply need to see the sheer numbers of the population that seek change and reform. They too will be on your side.

This is our chance to regain our destiny as the freedom loving sons and daughters of Cyrus the Great. This is our chance to bring down the theocracy and rise up to establish a democracy so that our children will be able to enjoy the fruits of liberty: freedom, equality, the rule of law, separation between religion and state and a constitution based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We see your struggles on the streets, we feel your passion and pain, we smell the fear of the ruling minority, we hear your cries for change, we understand the sacrifices you are making and we hope to taste victory with you when we unite once again as family in our great and beautiful homeland.

Drop by drop we can create an ocean of change and put out the fires of injustice.

In solidarity and in spirit,

Nazanin

PS. I dedicate my song "Someday" to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqkSmpKkfdI
