Let Dogs Loyalty and Devotion Be a Lesson to Us All

Unfortunately, animal cruelty is abundant in this world, and its ugliness is not confined to any particular geographic location or cultural background. However, cruelty and indifference to dogs is especially common in the Muslim world, and particularly in Iran.

As the pestilence of Islam infiltrated Iran, one of its many infectious gifts was cruelty to dogs. With that infiltration, such a negative attitude to man’s best friend has become mixed with Iranian culture, and further accelerated since the Ayatollahs’ rise to power.

Among the numerous superstitious claims made by Islam, one is that dogs are filthy animals and ought not intermingle with humans. They are, among others (including all non-Muslims) referred to as “Najis,” meaning filthy. Of course, why a dog is considered filthier than a human or other animal is baffling. There is no scientific evidence for this, which leaves egg on Islam’s face yet again.

Biologically, dogs have a special relationship with man. They co-evolved in a symbiotic relationship, benefiting from each other. Wolves that later evolved into dogs would scavenge around human camps, and became tamer as they learned not to fear man. As their interactions grew, man benefited by having a guarding and hunting companion. Thousands upon thousands of years of evolution has helped forge a special beneficial bond between these two species. A pact has been made, not by any individuals, but by the DNA of dogs and humans.

Any cruelty is appalling, but it is even more so when a pact exists. True to their nature, dogs never break this pact. It is always humans that do so, through the dark nature that resides within. If ever a dog has acted viciously, it is only as a result of negative conditioning by a vicious human.

The special bond between human and dog is occasionally compromised by stray individuals, simply because cruelty exists in some individuals of society, no matter which society is concerned. However, in Islamic countries, and namely Iran, the cruelty goes beyond the occasional disturbed individual. It has been adopted because of Islamic superstition and general Taazi sadism. The ignorance of this attitude has undermined the welfare of man’s best friend on a wholesale basis, where eradication and cruelty to dogs is widespread. It is incumbent on us to oppose such cruelty that stems from superstition, as is so often the case with religion, and especially Islam. It is time for Iranians, and in fact all humans, to recall why dogs have been our best friends, and the loving pact that exists between our species. A better fulfillment of both species will then follow. After all, the love of a friend, whether it is from a human or an animal, is one of the sweetest indulgences of living.

I will now refer you to an article about a true story of a particular dog’s reminder of that love. It is the story of the loyal devotion of a policeman’s dog, named Bobby:

THE LEGEND OF GRAYFRIAR'S BOBBY
Source: http://www.petstylist.com/ForPetOwners/Grayfriar.htm

Many years ago, there lived a special dog, a Kyleakin Skye Terrier named Bobby, who was the embodiment of devotion and undying love. His best friend and master, John Grey, was a policeman in Edinburgh, Scotland, with whom Bobby would walk his rounds every day. The two were inseparable and familiar figures in Edinburgh.

When John died in 1858, he was buried at the Grayfriar's churchyard. His faithful dog Bobby followed the funeral procession and then lingered at John's gravesite, choosing to remain at his master's side to watch over him. The town's efforts to provide him with a new and permanent home proved to be futile, as Bobby would sit day and night, through all the seasons, guarding his beloved master's grave. A man named James Brown, who was the caretaker for the Grayfriar's cemetery at the time, bent the rules and allowed Bobby to stay. Furthermore, when the weather got bad, he would coax him inside to warm up at the fireplace.

As the years went by, Bobby began to leave his master's side on a daily basis to walk with another policeman, a Sergeant Scott. This Sergeant trained him to respond to the town's cannon that was fired once a day at exactly 1pm, so that the town knew the correct time and more importantly, Bobby would know it was lunchtime. He would then head over to Trail's Coffee House where he was fed daily by John Trail. The coffee house is still there to this day, only now it is known as Grayfriar's Bobby Pub in honor of it's most loyal patron.

In 1867, Bobby's life of freedom was almost ended because of a new law that stated all dogs must have a license. The purpose of this new law was to get rid of all the stray dogs, which were viewed as a pestilence. Bobby's future looked grim until William Chambers of the Scottish Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who was also the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, stepped in and paid for the license. The Lord Provost granted Bobby a special collar with a permanent, lifetime license, engraved with the words "Grayfriar's Bobby from Lord Provost, 1867 License", so that he could continue his daily rounds and vigilant watch over his friend and master.

Bobby went to join John on January 14, 1872 at the ripe age of 16 and was buried just outside the cemetery where his master lies. In 1873, the Baroness Burdett-Couttes immortalized Bobby with a statue erected outside the gate of the Grayfriar's churchyard where he spent his life. This memorial was designed as a fountain with cups for people and a lower trough for dogs to drink out of, thus uniting dogs and humans. The Dog Aid Society also erected a stone memorial on Bobby's presumed burial site. As the years have passed, several books, articles and even movies have been made about this remarkable dog and his touching story. Bobby's memorials have become a favorite spot, a reminder to visitors from around the world and all walks of life, of the devotion and love of one small dog. There is an inscription on the stone memorial that expresses best why this one little dog is loved and admired so much. It simply reads, "Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all".

Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a violent psychopathology that does not confine itself to animals. "Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives," wrote humanitarian Albert Schweitzer. "Murderers...very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids," according to Robert K. Resler, who developed
profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Studies have now convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention. They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes humans.
The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.

In a study of the beginning of animal and plant domestication in southern Persia, Frank Hole and his colleagues concluded from osteological evidence that the dog had probably been domesticated in Khuzestan in 5500 B.C.E. Remains of domesticated dogs have also been found at the site of Haji Firuz in Azerbaijan province (radiocarbon dated to 5500-5000 B.C.E.).

A statue of Persian Mastiff from Persepolis (Click to enlarge)

Aside from Zoroastrian funerary rites, pre-Islamic Persians used the dog not only for hunting and herding but also in war. Persians, Greeks, Assyrians, and Babylonians used large mastiffs as shock troops; one Athenian dog so distinguished itself against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.E.) that its likeness was supposedly placed on Greek victory monuments.

Indian dogs were highly prized among the Persian aristocracy; Xerxes I (489-65 B.C.E.) reportedly took a large number of them with his army when he marched against Greece. One of the Persian satraps of Babylon assigned the revenues derived from four large villages in that province to the care of his Indian hounds. A dog belonging to Darius III (336-30 B.C.E.) supposedly refused to leave his corpse after he had been struck down by Bessus.

Dogfights must have been common in ancient Persia. The Persian phrase sag-e karzari (war dog) may refer either to canine warriors or merely to dogs trained for dogfights.

Myths

Pre-Islamic myths:

According to the Bundahishn, all animals were created from the purified semen of the primordial bull. Ten varieties of dog are mentioned, of which only the guard dog, the sheep dog, and the hunting dog can properly be considered dogs. The dog is said to have been created to protest man's possessions against wolves; in its opposition to evil it cooperates with the cock and is able to repel evil by its mere gaze.

In ancient Persian folk etymology the word sag (dog) was derived from seh-yak (one third) because one third of its essence is human.

Islamic myths:

Three distinct myths of the creation of the dog can be reconstructed from Islamic texts. According to a tradition related on the authority of Ali b. Abi Taleb, when Adam and Eve were cast out of paradise, Satan came to the beasts of the earth and encouraged them with violent cries to attack and devour the couple; his spittle flew out of his mouth, and God fashioned a male and a female dog from it. The male was sent to guard Adam and the female to protect Eve. The enmity between the dog and wild animals was thus initiated.

In a second version, God created the dog from the clay left over from His creation of Adam, which may lie behind the assertion in some sources that dog bones and tissue may be grafted to the human body.

The third myth may be deduced from a tradition about the taboo on eating the dog's flesh because the animal is "metamorphosed"; the implication is that human sinners are transformed into dogs and that eating the flesh would be a form of cannibalism.

A tradition about the domestication of the dog was related on the authority of Ebn Abbas: When Adam was cast out of heaven and attacked by Satan, God reassured him and sent Moses' staff as a means of defense; Adam struck a dog with it, but God commanded him to pat the animal on the head. The animal thus being domesticated, befriending Adam and his seed.

In epic and legend

Accounts of feral children raised by various animals are widely attested, but it can be verified that human children have been nursed by dogs. Several heroes, gods, and legendary figures of antiquity were supposed to have been nursed by dogs.

Herodotus reported a legend according to which Cyrus the Great had been suckled by a *****. Similarly the author of Mojmal attributed the violent nature of "the father of Soqlab" to his having been nursed by a dog. In the Bahman-nama violent men are repeatedly likened to those who have been nursed by dogs.

In some oral versions of the Shah-nama, Afrasiab is said to have owed his violent temper to his having been suckled by a *****; the wicked king Zahhak is said to have been nursed by a she-wolf. Another ruthless epic character, Bokhtonnasr (Nebuchadnezzar), was supposedly so hideous that his parents had no choice but to expose him, but he survived, thanks to a ***** who came to nurse him three times a day.

According to a contemporary Boir Ahmadi story, the messianic ruler Kaykhosrow is hidden with his horse and hunting dog in a cave in the province of Fars. Aside from the expected association of kings with hunting dogs in epic literature, dogs fulfill other roles in Persian tales.

According to a famous tale in the Shah-nama and other sources, Bahram was awakened to the oppression of his tyrannical vezier as a result of witnessing a shepherd's treatment of his treacherous sheep dog, which, having grown enamored of a shewolf, was allowing the latter to ravage his master's flocks.

In mystical literature

Because of the dog's humble position in Persian life, it became a symbol of humility in mystical literature. According to some Muslim sources, Jesus scolded his apostles for criticizing the stench of a dog's carcass; rather than appreciating the whiteness of its teeth.

Noah (Nuh, in popular etymology derived from from an Arabic root associated with mourning) is said to have received his name because God scolded him for expressing disgust at a dog, which inspired him to bitter lamentation for his deed.

The mystic Ma'shuq Tusi once struck a dog with a stone, and immediately a divine horseman appeared and whipped him, exclaiming that in the eyes of God the ascetic is essentially no better than the creature that he mistreats. Many mystics proclaimed that dogs had first taught them humility.

In magic

The association of the dog with the devil may have motivated several attempts at eradicating the animal. The Prophet Mohammad (and later Yusof b. Hajjaj) was said to have ordered all dogs to be put to death but to have modified his order to only apply to black dogs, especially those with two spots (noqtatayn) over their eyes.

The black dog figures prominently in magic. Its satanic connections mean that harming it may bring injury or misfortune to the perpetrator. In Khorassan, it is believed that he who kills a dog will lose a child or seven years of bad luck. Such beliefs may at least partly reflect pre-Islamic taboos against harming dogs, reinterpreted to conform to the Islamic association of the animal with evil.

For example, by the 9th century, Zoroastrian concern for the welfare of dogs had already come to be viewed as an attempt to avert the evil eye. Nevertheless, according to one tradition, Imam Husayn was seen eating in front of a dog, to which he gave a piece of bread for each piece that he ate himself.

In fable and folktale
Many fables about dogs in the Aesopian corpus are also found in Persian folklore and literature. Perhaps the most famous is a about a dog that drops meat (or a bone) for its reflection in the water. Others have been classified by Ulrich Marzolph, who has also provided a convenient list of tale types about dogs in Persian folk narrative.

Tales of the dog's fidelity are particularly well represented in oral and written sources. In one version a dog (or sometimes a mongoose) saves a child from a serpent by biting the latter to death; the child's father sees the dog's bloody mouth and, thinking that it has eaten the child, kills the animal, then finds out the truth.

Dog is supposed to be man's best friend but it may not be the right mode of protection if you are a pious leader of an Islamic state with a reputation for forgoing luxuries.
So perhaps, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, should have known better than to allow his security team to deploy four highly trained sniffer dogs in a search for explosives before his appearance at the national press exhibition.

It hardly helped that journalists attending the event at Tehran's youth artistic and cultural centre were ordered outside for more than two hours to enable the animals to scour the venue unhindered, before it was declared safe for the president.

The incident has put Ahmadinejad in the dog house with his critics, who point out the contradiction between the canine deployment and classic Islamic teaching that dogs are unclean. Grumbles have also been heard about the cost of the animals, which were bought for a total of £314,000.
Some complained that the dogs contradicted the president's carefully crafted "simple-life, justice-seeking, anti-luxury" image, the conservative website Tabnak reported.

A contrast has also been drawn between Ahmadinejad's decision, on taking office, to remove costly Persian rugs from his presidential quarters, in keeping with his ascetic persona.

Iran quietly broke its religious taboo on dogs several years ago when officials decided to use them at airports and border crossings for detecting drug traffickers. However, their deployment in the protection of the head of state may be unprecedented, at least since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
