Our World: Politically correct perfidy

Caroline Glick, THE JERUSALEM POST
Sep. 11, 2006
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1157913606853&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

Last Friday, Harvard University 's student newspaper The Crimson had a noteworthy front page. The top headline read, "Students plan to protest Khatami's visit."

The second headline read, "Cheney visits Harvard Club through backdoor." The first story referred to plans by student groups to protest Harvard's Kennedy School of Government's decision to invite former Iranian president Muhammad Khatami to speak at the school on Sept. 10.

The second story reported how Vice President Richard Cheney was forced to enter the Harvard Club in Boston through the back door to evade some 200 protesters.

On the surface, these stories seem to perfectly balance one another. Some people are protesting against Cheney, some against Khatami…

Now how are the Red Sox doing?

Kennedy School Dean David Ellwood defended the decision to provide his school's most prestigious platform to Khatami by asking rhetorically, "Do we listen to those that we disagree with, and vigorously challenge them, or do we close our ears completely?" This sounds reasonable, but is it?

It is surely important to know what people like Khatami have to say. But why did Harvard need to honor him with an invitation to speak? And why was he allowed to speak alone? Why did Harvard not suggest that he debate Iranian students or journalists whose friends and colleagues were imprisoned, tortured and in some cases killed by Khatami for calling for democracy and freedom of the press during his tenure?

Why did Harvard not offer to have Khatami debate former Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu regarding the ballistic missiles capable carrying nuclear warheads that Iran developed during his tenure; the hundreds of millions of dollars Iran transferred to Palestinian terror groups and to Hizbullah during his presidency; and the advances in Iran's nuclear weapons program that were made when Khatami was in office?

Why did Harvard not suggest Khatami debate Vice President Richard Cheney regarding the evidence that several of the Sept. 11 terrorists passed through Iran on their way to the US; several senior Al Qaida leaders including Osama Bin Laden's son Sa'ad have been operating in Iran since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001; and that most of the terrorists in Iraq are directed by Iran?

Of course, Khatami would have refused to participate in such a debate. But had a debate between him and Cheney been organized, it would have been interesting to see which side the protesters outside of the Harvard Club in Boston would have supported. Expressing the view of his 200 fellow demonstrators, Nick Giannone told the Crimson that having Cheney speak at the Harvard Club was, "the equivalent of Hitler coming back to life and coming to Boston ." Giannone continued, "This guy's a straight-up fascist. I also find it pretty appalling that someone would pay… to sit in a room with a war criminal."

It would also be interesting to know what side Ellwood and his Kennedy School colleagues would have taken. Just a few months ago, then Academic Dean Prof. Steven Walt co-authored an anti-Semitic diatribe titled The Israel Lobby where he effectively accused Israel and the America Jewish community of subverting US national security interests by coercing the US to fight the war against the global jihad and view Israel as a US ally.

THE TWIN headlines in the Crimson were complemented by twin news stories in Israel 's papers on Sunday. Sunday morning Jerusalem Magistrates Court Judge David Mintz dismissed criminal charges against right-wing activist Nadia Matar. Last summer Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz indicted Matar for "insulting a public servant" in reaction to a letter Matar faxed to Yonatan Bassi, the head of the Disengagement Authority where she compared Bassi to the Judenrat who collaborated with the Nazis in deporting fellow Jews to concentration camps.

In his decision to expunge the charges against Matar, Mintz wrote, "Anytime we are dealing with freedom of speech, criminal law does not present the correct and effective tool."

Using the same logic in the past, Attorney-General Mazuz has refused to indict MK Azmi Bishara, now visiting in Damascus with two of is fellow MKS Jamal Zahalka and Wasal Taha, for incitement to violence or treason for statements he has made expressing support for Palestinian terrorism, Hizbullah and Syria .

At the urging of Interior Minister Roni Bar-On, Sunday, Mazuz ordered a criminal investigation against Bishara, Taha and Zahalka for visiting Syria in violation of the law barring officials from visiting enemy states without explicit government permission. The law was passed in response to Bishara's last visit to Damascus in 2001. The Knesset passed the law because six years ago the Attorney-General claimed he lacked the legal means to indict Bishara.

Bishara claims that he has a right to say anything that he likes. And he is right. He has the right to praise Hizbullah. He may tell Israeli Arabs that they should reject Israel 's right to exist. His colleague Taha had the legal right in July to tell an online audience that he and his colleagues had repeatedly advised the Palestinians to kidnap IDF soldiers. Taha had the right to commend them for abducting Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Bishara had the right last week to praise Syria for its operations to free "occupied Arab lands," and warn his Ba'athist hosts to be on the lookout for Israeli aggression.

It is legal to make these statements. What is illegal is the treasonous actions they describe. Yet, rather than contending with the fact that Bishara, Taha and Zahalka are guilty of treason, Mazuz now investigates the technical fact of their visit, just as in the past he ignored their treasonous actions arguing that they have a right to their opinions - as if providing aid and comfort to Israel's enemies is a matter of opinion.

IT BEARS pointing out that Bishara - who like Hizbullah , Iran , Fatah and Hamas believes that Israel has no right to exist - is a favorite son of the Israeli Left. Haaretz's op-ed pages are open to him. Last Tuesday he wrote there that protests against the government and IDF's mishandling of the war are the result of the inherent racism of Israeli society which immorally assumes "that Israel… must threaten its Arab neighbors and not be threatened, deter and not be deterred; and that the Arabs are incapable of developing human and material infrastructures that make resistance possible."

Bishara, who blamed the war in Lebanon on the US which he said put Israel up to it, is the former director of research at Hebrew University's Van Leer Institute and a frequent speaker at the institute's events. In 1997, the New Israel Fund invited him to participate in a conference at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington discussing Israel at 50.

When considered in isolation, Harvard's decision to invite Khatami to speak; the leftist protesters' desire to humiliate Cheney; Mazuz's decision to indict Matar for "insulting a public servant; and Mazuz's decision to ignore Bishara, Taha and Zahalka's apparent treason, all seem to be reasonable good faith judgments. They can all be defended in the interests of liberty, democracy, free speech and public order. But when placed in the overall context, it becomes clear that the opposite is true.

By inviting Khatami to speak unopposed at Harvard, the Kennedy School effectively advanced his anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-liberal agenda.

In calling Cheney a Nazi, a fascist and a war criminal, the leftist protesters in Boston silenced debate about the nature of fascism, genocide and war crimes by claiming that those who fight these scourges of humanity are morally equal to those who commit them.

By indicting Matar for expressing herself because he didn't like her views on the one hand, and refusing to even investigate apparent acts of treason by Bishara and his colleagues because those actions are considered acceptable by his social circle on the other hand, Mazuz makes a mockery of Israel 's laws. He transforms his position from one of chief law enforcement officer to one of chief thought enforcement officer. To advance a radical, anti-Zionist and anti-American political agenda, he is willing to outlaw debate and ignore treason.

Many argue that the only way to stop the Left's subversion and so win the war of ideas, is to attempt to co-opt its agenda from the inside. By this logic, champions of free speech, democracy and liberty should eagerly seek opportunities to speak at Harvard, or be the token "fascists" on panel discussions at Hebrew University . Unfortunately, this view is wrong. Accepting the legitimacy of leftist institutions prolongs their power, expands their undeserved legitimacy and erodes the power of the message of those who defend liberty, free speech and democracy.

Rather than supporting the Left, those concerned about the protection of liberal values should work to expose the corruption of these institutions and build alternative institutions that can replace them.

Five years after Sept 11, the greatest asset the jihadists who seek our physical and spiritual destruction have are those individuals, institutions and groups within our own societies that prevent us from seeing the dangers and defending ourselves. Our greatest challenge as individuals is to expose these dangers and those who hide them to our fellow citizens.

Murder is Justified if Political, Can We Have Dialogue of Civilizations Now?

Khatami: In Islamic Republic, if your mother is raped, tortured and beaten to death by high ranking officials of the regime and if your claim to seek justice is viewed as political, you will get no justice and the murderers will walk free while rewarded! In Islamic Republic, don’t rush for democracy and justice, be patient. We need to move gradually forward and rapidly backward! After 27 years of thriving and successful Islamic regime in Iran , we have just begun our path to democracy. Thus, the world's civilizations should bow to the mullahs and consider us as role model and the beacon of democracy!

Yours truly,

“Hich Kaareh” (the man of no position), Khatami

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-09-14-wiesel-iran_x.htm?csp=34
NEW YORK (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel says Iran should be expelled from the United Nations.
"I began a campaign for the expulsion of Iran from the U.N. and the declaration of its president as a persona non- grata all over the world because he threatens a member state of destruction," the Holocaust survivor said Thursday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Iran announced April 11 that it had enriched a small quantity of uranium, fueling international concerns that it is well on the way to developing an atomic bomb. The country insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" and has dismissed the Holocaust as a myth.

TERRORISM: SUICIDE BOMBER'S 'WEDDING' TO FE ATURE IN NEW TV SHOW

Dubai, 14 Sept. (AKI) - A new programme airing on al-Arabiya, the Dubai-based pan-Arabic network, will on Friday show rare footage of a mock wedding ceremony carried out for a suicide bomber on the eve of his terrorist mission. Known as The Martyr's Wedding - the young man is being symbolically wed to the 'virgin' that under Islamic teaching awaits him in heaven - it is also believed to be a form of moral encouragement by terrorist groups to encourage followers to conduct suicide operations.

The programme is the second in a new series on terrorism which examines some of the social, religious, political and economic factors that play into the terrorist phenomenon and boasts rare or previously unknown video footage.

The first episode, aired last Friday, discussed the backgrounds of the the three most wanted leaders of Al-Qaeda - Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - revealing details that have never been shown through video footage and interviews with their relatives and friends.

The upcoming second episode, entitled "From Recruitment To Death", looks at how young people are being convinced to join extremist groups, and how they are being trained on weapons and in carrying out suicidal attacks.

There is also footage showing how and where members of those groups receive intensive training in explosives and in combat with various kinds of weapons.

The surprise of the show, according to al-Arabiya, will be a special interview with one of the former leaders of an extremist group - a friend of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi. The two co-founded an Islamic terrorist group in Jordan in the nineties, and spent four years together in jail. This former terrorist leader will be speaking of his experience as a prominent leader of a terrorist group until he reflected, repented and decided to reject violence and the murder of innocent people.

Dutch justice minister, Piet Hein Donner

NETHERLANDS: MINISTER SURVIVES NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE AFTER SHARIA LAW REMARKS

The Hague, 14 Sept. (AKI) - Dutch justice minister Piet Hein Donner on Thursday survived a no-confidence motion in the parliament brought against him by rightwing conservative Dutch MP Geert Wilders's party, the Groep Wilders, over Donner's controversial suggestion in a new book that Islamic (Shariah) law should be applied in the Netherlands if two-thirds of the population is in favour. Muslims currently make up some 6 percent of the country's population.

"I had hoped that the minister (Donner) would have stated he categorically ruled out the idea of Sharia in the Netherlands," Dutch daily Der Telegraf quoted Wilders as saying during Thursday's emergency debate, adding that Donner needed to better clarify his views on the subject.

Der Telegraf quoted Donner as saying there had been misunderstandings concerning his remarks in a book published on Wednesday and that it is untrue he is in favour of Sharia law. In the book, Donner says: "For me it is clear that if two-thirds of Dutch people want to introduce Sharia that should be possible. How could we legally oppose it? It would be scandalous to say 'that is impossible'.

Wilders is best known for his view favouring the restriction of immigration, especially from non-western countries, and his opposition to the populous Muslim state of Turkey joining the European Union.

There are close to one million Muslims living in the Netherlands out of population of 16 million. Turkish and Moroccan Muslims form two-thirds of the total number of Muslims.

SAYS TERRORISM: IRAQI CRISIS HELPS IRAN 'S ATOMIC AMBITIONS EXPERT

Herzliya, 14 Sept. (AKI) - by Ahmad Rafat - The last day of an international conference on terrorism Thursday in Herzliya, Israel, organised by the Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT), an Israeli think tank, focused on Iran's nuclear programme and the country's support of militant groups in the Middle East. Terrorism and the nuclear threat was the theme of a workshop on Iran . Addressing the gathering, Israeli analyst Ebrahim Kam, the deputy chief of the Jafa centre for strategic studies, said the Iraqi crisis is helping Iran 's atomic ambitions.

The Islamic Republic needs nuclear weapons to extend its hegemony in Iraq, while at the same time the Iraqi crisis helps it on its path toward atomic weapons, the analyst said. The international community fears Iran is trying to build atomic weapons though Tehran claims its programme is solely for civilian use.

Iran is supporting different groups and strategies in Iraq in order to create enough instability to place the US and its allies in a difficult position, Kam added.

Iran is supporting the Shiite militias of Moqtada al-Sadr, Shiite leader Abdelaziz Hakim and Sciri (The Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq)'s 10,000-strong militia, called the Badr Brigades, as well as funding Sunni insurgent groups, the analyst noted.

GERMANY: FIRST RABBIS ORDAINED SINCE WORLD WAR II
Dresden, 14 Sept. (AKI) - Germany on Thursday ordained three rabbis - the first in over 60 years- at a ceremony hailed as a significant milestone for the Jewish community in the country that carried out the extermination of over six million Jews in the World War II Holocaust. Germany's Daniel Alter, Czech-born Thomas Cucera, and South African Malcolm Matitani were ordained in the eastern city of Dresden 's modern, stone synagogue, which was rebuilt after the fall on the Berlin Wall and which is the first in the former East Germany .

"After the Holocaust, many people could never have imagined that Jewish life in Germany could blossom again," said president Horse Koehler. That is why the first ordination of rabbis in Germany is a very special event indeed."

Kucera, 35, Alter, 47, and Matitani, 38, wore black robles with white prayer shawls trimmed with tassels draped around their shoulders. Some 250 people, many of them from Jewish communities across Europe and in Israel , attended the ceremony. Afterwards, the governor gave a reception for the new rabbis and those attending the cermony.

Kucera will be based in the southern German city of Munich, Alter in Oldenburg, northwest Germany, and Matitani in the South Africa 's legislative capital of Cape Town . The three graduated from Abraham Geiger College in Berlin , founded in 1999 and attached to the University of Potsdam .

Kucer, Alter and Matitani are the first rabbis to be ordained in Germany since the Nazis desroyed the College of Jewish Studies in Berlin in 1942, which for over 50 years forced students to travel abroad to study to become a rabbi

The Jewish community in Germany has grown again slowly since World War II and now numbers over 100,000 but only has 25 rabbis. It has more than tripled since reunification in 1990, mainly owing to a government policy to allow Jews from the former Soviet Union to enter Germany . When the Nazis were voted into power in 1933, Germany had a thriving Jewish community of over 500,000, many of whom emigrated or perished in the Nazi extermination camps.

September 15 2006
Mr. Elie Wiesel
I would like to thank you for your moral stands against the barbaric regime in Iran.
For your information, on March 13, 2005 Ms. Homa Ehsan, Director of S.O.S. Iran’s
Political Office, urged the United Nations to expel the Islamic Republic in Iran from
the UN based on human rights violations inherent in IRI’s constitution which are in
stark contradictions to UN’s Human Rights Charter.
In spring of 2005 Ms. Ehsan attended the meeting of the UN Human Rights
Commission in Geneva and hand delivered the same message and demand to the
Commission officials.
For your information and review, below are copies of two of our letters to “Office of
the High Commissioner for Human Rights” highlighting the unmitigated proof that
the Islamic Republic’s constitution violates the “Charter of Human Rights” in its
rotten cores.
We hereby would like to offer you and your office S.O.S. Iran’s support in pursuing
this very important and urgent matter.
I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you for an interview on our
satellite television program that has a sizable audience around the globe including
inside Iran. If possible, we would also like to set up a meeting with you to further
discuss and coordinate our support for your campaign.
Best Regards,
Dr. Iman Foroutan

Dear Sir/Madam:
S.O.S. Iran is composed of a large number of groups opposing the Islamic Republic
in Iran (IRI.) S.O.S. Iran is demanding that the membership of Islamic Republic of
Iran (IRI) in the United Nations be terminated.
Over the last 26 years, the people of Iran and the world have been suffering from
the ever increasing activities of IRI in support of terrorism and human rights
violations. IRI has been the cradle of support, sponsorship and the expansion of the
religious terrorism that has been threatening world security. IRI is thriving on
international terrorist activities and has been blackmailing the world by developing
nuclear weapons.
Some of the European countries which have been assisting IRI to expand its nuclear
power capabilities for the purpose of the power generation are slowly realizing that
the final objective of IRI is nothing but to obtain nuclear weapons. The international
community will have to face this eminent danger and take steps to alleviate this
worldwide threat.
The United Nations is an organization which defends and protects the rights of the
nations using the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a metric by which it
evaluates human rights in the world. We find it surprising that the United Nations
allows the membership and participation of IRI, which violates the most basic rights
of Iranian citizens and justifies their criminal actions in its constitution.
The purpose for submission of this petition is to reveal the contradictions of IRI’s
constitution and civil laws with those of United Nations Universal Declarations of
Human Rights. IRI’s enormous crimes against humanity are repulsive reflection on
humanity that must be erased.
Page #3

The Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:
Whereas, recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights
of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace
in the world;
Whereas, disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts
which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which
human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and
want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people;
Whereas, it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last
resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be
protected by the rule of law;
Whereas, it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between
nations;
Whereas, the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith
in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in
the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress
and better standards of life in larger freedom;
Whereas, Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with
the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human
rights and fundamental freedoms;
Whereas, a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of greatest
importance for the full realization of this pledge;
In reality the following are practiced in the Islamic Republic of Iran:
In the 2nd article of IRI constitution it is stated that the foundation of governing, and
legislation only comes from God. Devine revelations are through the Supreme
Leader, the “Imam” or (Velayate Faghih).
Article 207 of IRI’s penal code states that if a non-Muslim kills a Muslim then the
killer is liable to legal retribution, qisas, and subject to the death penalty. In
contrast, a Muslim can kill a non-Muslim and only pay blood money (Diyeh).
Article 209 states that if a man deliberately murders a Muslim woman, then before
he is to receive Gesas (death penalty), the family of the woman have to pay the
murderer’s family half of his blood money. The succeeding article extends the same
double standard to a non-Muslim man murdering non-Muslim women, whether or not
they share the same religion. Thus a woman’s life is valued as half that of a man and
the punishment of a man murdering a woman is not the same as a woman’s unless
the family of the murdered woman pays the murderer half his blood-money.
Page #4

According to IRI law if a person changes religion from Islam to any other religion,
he/she will be labelled an “apostate” (Mortad) and therefore it is merited to be
killed.
The above mentioned Islamic Republic laws are in conflict with the Article 18 of
Universal declaration of human rights that states everyone has the right to freedom
of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion
or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or
private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and
observance.
Another example is the article of 26 of UDHR that states everyone has the right to
education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental
stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional
education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally
accessible to all on the basis of merit. However in the Islamic Republic of Iran, these
opportunities are only available to the Shiite Muslims who can prove their loyalty to
the supreme leader.
The article 4 of UDHR states that no one shall be held in slavery or servitude;
slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms, however in the
Islamic Republic of Iran the father or the grandfather of a female can force her to
marry anyone who he deems fit and collect her dowry at any age. He can even deny
her permission to travel and even prevent her from leaving the house. One can only
conclude the lawfulness of slavery in the IRI regime.
The respect for the inherent right to life of a person under 18 is not guaranteed
under the IRI law, particularly in light of article 220 of IRI’s Penal Code, which
provides that a man who kills his own child or his son's child is not subject to
discretionary punishment (qesas).
The Islamic Republic article 222 states that anyone who kills an insane individual is
not subject to prosecutions.
The fifth article of UDHR states that no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Whereas, Article 201 of IRI criminal
law states that a thief shall be subject to amputation of four fingers of right hand for
first offence, the left foot for the second offence, prison for third and execution for
the fourth.
Chapter 6 of the IRI criminal code states that everyone drinking a glass of alcoholic
beverage shall receive 74 lashes.
The penalty for adultery under Article 83 of the penal code, called the Law of
Hodoud is flogging (100 lashes of the whip) for unmarried male and female
offenders. Married offenders may be punished by stoning regardless of their
gender, but the method laid down for a man involves his burial up to his waist, and
for a woman up to her chest (Article 102).

The women without the proper Islamic republic dress code will be punished by 74
lashes.
Article 186 of IRI penal code states that any person who is involved with or supports
an armed opposition against the Islamic government and the divine rule is subject to
capital punishment even though the culprit may not be a direct participant in the
armed insurgency.
Article 111 of IRI penal code states that act of homosexuality is punishable by death.
Article 237 of IRI’s penal code states that a first degree murder can only be proved
based on the testimony of two male witnesses.
Article 11 of the IRI constitution states that the Iranian armed forces’ duties are to
engage in Jihad (holy war) for god and to promote the divine rule throughout the
world. Based on this article of the IRI constitution, support of terrorist groups by the
Islamic Republic is legal. It is in this framework that IRI sponsors organizations such
as Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and the Al-Queda. It is perfectly legal to wage war and
defeat the infidel America in Afghanistan and Iraq. This law permits support of terror
groups to force out Israel from Palestine.
In conclusion, based on IRI laws, the arguments presented here and many more that
can be presented upon request, the IOCC hereby urges that the United Nations expel
IRI from the U.N. and all its affiliate organizations.
This statement was presented in and approved by the International Conference of
the Iranian Opposition Coalition Council on March 13, 2005 in Los Angeles,
California.
Respectfully yours,

Office of the United Nations
High Commissioner for Human Rights
UNOG-OHCHR
1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland
June 23, 2006
Honorable President and Members of the Human Rights Council
The replacement of the Commission of Human Rights with the Human Rights Council
on March 15 2006 was heartwarming news to freedom lovers and to those defending
human rights.
Regrettably the commission had failed in its original goal of protecting freedom and
in practical terms sometimes strengthened the human rights violators by offering
them a platform from which they could act as if they were the supporters of human
rights (wolves dressing as sheep).
However, this renewed optimism emanated from the hope that this new council
would keep the most blatant violators of human rights out of the council. After all,
how could criminals be trusted to protect the very same thing they violate?
The failure of the now disbanded commission was noticed when it was faced with
massive human rights violations such as the killing and summary executions of
political prisoners in the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) in 1987. Even then, the
commission deemed it sufficient to merely release a statement expressing its
displeasure. Despite these atrocities, the same criminals were allowed to keep their
seats in the commission, and to make matters worse, they were even allowed to
become candidates for the new council!
Our representative, Mrs. Homa Ehsan, brought our concerns to your attention a year
ago in Geneva. Our position is and has always been that countries that enact laws
that are in direct violation of human rights should not be allowed to become a
member of the United Nations or, at the very least, not to be a member of then
Commission or now Council on Human Rights.

It is our hope and the hope of all those who protect human rights, that these guidelines be
accepted and enacted by the UN and all offices under its auspices, especially, the Human
Rights Council. We strongly believe that once you have accepted the representatives of IRI,
by inference you are approving of their inhumane laws. This could mean that the council
could no longer be truly considered as an objective guardian of human rights and able to
condemn the violators.
You and the people of the world know full well the barbaric actions of the IRI when they
confront freedom lovers, journalists, critics, workers, teachers, even children and teenagers
who only wanted their basic human rights. (Photo journalist Zahra Kazemi is just to mention
one). What is really shocking is that the barbaric laws of the IRI are even written in their
constitution. However, and perhaps unknowingly, once the UN and the offices affiliated with
the UN, accept the membership of the IRI delegation, they indirectly legitimize these
discriminatory laws.
We bring to your attention Principle # 2 of the IRI constitution, points, 1, 2,3,4,5 and 6:
“Legislation duties are delegated to God, continuation of leadership is by divine intervention
(Velayat Faghih), and holy war (Jihad) or the killing of infidels is permissible to maintain the
Islamic system”,
In Principle # 3, point 11 of the IRI constitution: “Establishment and maintenance of an
Islamic Army is a religious duty”.
According to IRI Laws, killing the opposition and their supporters, execution of those who
convert to another religion and the execution of homosexuals and children under 18 years
of age is permissible. According to the same law, a father who kills his own child will not be
punished as well as the killer of an insane or mentally retarded person.
These are but a handful of examples of misguided laws that have been legislated in Iran.
There are hundreds of laws like these. How on earth could you place those people who
enforce these laws on a Council of Human Rights? What kind of message are you sending if
we permit violators of human rights to sit on a commission or council whose job is to
protect human rights?
If this is not hypocrisy, what is? Why should representatives of this regime that violate the
rights of people of Iran be granted permission to speak at the opening session of this
council? The IRI is mocking Iranians and citizens of the world by trying to create the
perception that since they are tolerated by the world community (international business
partners) and the United Nations Organizations, they can continue suppressing every voice
of reason in Iran with impunity.
We propose that this new Human Rights Council employ a number of experts in
international law to review the constitution of countries that violate human rights. These
countries should be put on notice that as long as their laws counter the spirit of human
rights principles, they will be banned from all United Nations organizations, or at least those
safeguarding human rights.
Best Regards

Elie Wiesel joins call to expel Iran from UN

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3303107,00.html

Nobel Prize laureate joins group of Israeli legal scholars, public figures calling for Iran’s removal from int’l body; ‘it is hard to believe that when Ahmadinejad is denying the Holocaust the enlightened world is planning to host him at General Assembly,’ group says; former ambassador to US Rosenne: Nobody will be able to claim that we did not know and therefore did not react

With the opening of the UN General Assembly on September 12, 2006, Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel has joined a call by Israeli legal scholars and public personalities who are calling for the expulsion of Iran from the UN due to the statements of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other members of the Iranian national security establishment.

The group said in a statement that it was established at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs “in order to warn of the violations by the Iranian president of the 1949 Convention to prevent and punish the crime of genocide and to propose the initiation of legal proceedings against Ahmadinejad within the UN framework.”

Members of the group include Dr. Meir Rosenne, former legal advisor to the Foreign Ministery and Ambassador of Israel to the US and France; Dr. Dore Gold, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN and today President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs; lawyer Irit Kahan, former director of the International Affairs Department at the State Attorney’s Office; Eytan Bentsur, former director-general of the Foreign Ministry; attorney Justus Reid Weiner, former director of the American Law and External Relations Department of the Justice Ministry, and MK Danny Naveh.

“The Jerusalem Center’s legal group has determined that the Iranian president is in violation of the 1949 Genocide Convention, which outlaws incitement to genocide,” Dori Gold said.

'Mandatory moral obligation'

Eytan Bentsur added: It is inexplicable and inexcusable that the international community is not reacting vehemently to Ahmadinejad’s Nazi-style utterances. If there is no international uproar, he will be led to believe that he can get away with murder.”

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz and Professor Irwin Cotler, a member of the Canadian Parliament and former justice minister of Canada, have also joined the group’s call as of late.

"It’s quite incredible that 70 years after World War Two the president of a member country of the UN is stating load and clear that his intention is to wipe the Jewish State off the map and to realize the indifference of civilized countries when such a threat is uttered against the Jewish people," Meir Rosenne said.

“Nobody will be able to claim that we did not know and therefore did not react.”

'A real threat to humanity'

The group said it believes that Ahmadinejad’s statements constitute “direct public incitement to commit genocide and participation in genocide” and that “the Iranian threat is not a potential or theoretical one. On the basis of international legal standards, the president of Iran has violated the explicit prohibition in the Charter on the prevention and punishment of crimes of genocide. This violation is punishable by the UN, its main bodies and judicial organs the international, regional and municipal jurisdictions.

“The request to expel Iran from the family of nations is not only legitimate, but is the mandatory moral obligation of all those who see themselves obligated to the peace of mankind. Iran today endangers the peace of the entire world. It is necessary to do everything to prevent the president of Iran from fulfilling his plans, which pose a real threat to humanity," the statement said.

“It is hard to believe that at a time when the president of Iran is making statements denying the Holocaust and does not hide his intention to erase Israel from the map, the enlightened world is planning to host Ahmadinejad at the opening of the General Assembly instead of evicting his country from the UN altogether."

A group of Israeli diplomats plans to turn to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and demand that it launch legal proceedings against Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for conspiring to commit crimes against humanity.

Following the scathing remarks made by Ahmadinejad in the past few months against Israel's right to exist and his Holocaust denial, while the Iranians are exerting increasing efforts to obtain nuclear weapons, Israeli diplomats decided to form a group aimed at looking into the possibility of launching a legal procedure.

On Sunday, the group members announced that a legal examination of the issue, in which international legal experts took part, ended with the conclusion that the Iranian president could be sued. The legal file against Ahmadinejad is almost ready for submission.

Among the forum members are former Israeli Ambassador to the United States and France Dr. Meir Rosen, former Foreign Ministry Director-General Eytan Bentsur, and former Minister Dan Naveh. The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA), headed by former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dore Gold, is providing the forum with logistic assistance in preparing the lawsuit.

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide

was accepted by the UN General Assembly on December 1948, as the international community's response to the revelations on the Holocaust. The forum's document quotes a speech by Ahmadinejad from October 28, 2005, in which he called to "wipe Israel off the map."

In an interview to the al-Alam Iranian television network during the Islamic Convention in Saudi Arabia, Ahmadinejad declared that Israel's existence was "the main obstacle faced by the Islamic nation." Recently, in April 2006, the Iranian president defined Israel as "a rotten and dried-up tree which will be destroyed by one storm."

'Direct and public incitement to commit genocide'

The Convention on genocide defined genocide as acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. The acts for which countries can be punished as part of the Convention include physical genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, as well as a "direct and public incitement to commit genocide."

Rosen and Gold write in their document that "Ahmadinejad's remarks constitute without a doubt a 'direct and public incitement' to commit genocide. The Iranian regime supports terror organizations, such as the Islamic Jihad, which continuously carries out murderous terror attacks against innocent Israeli citizens. However, the gravity of Ahmadinejad's remarks is particularly outstanding in light of Iran's attempts to develop mass destruction weapons."

The document also stated that "the State of Israel must act against Iran through clause 9 of the Convention. According to this clause, disagreements between states that signed the Convention regarding its implementation must be solved by turning to the International Court of Justice in The Hague."

Both Israel and Iran signed and approved the discussed treaty in the 1950's.

At this stage, the forum is formulating the last wordings of the petition to the ICJ, while continuing to collect evidence, most of it from the media. The forum plans to take additional steps against Ahmadinejad in other European countries with legislation against Holocaust denial.

Columbia Withdraws invitation to Ahmadinejad...so let's write them a thank you note!
Dear Friends,

I have spoken with the assistants of Mr. Lee Bollinger, the president of Columbia University and their graciousness and intelligence was extremely moving. Therefore I would like to urge all of you to take the time to write both Mr. Bollinger and Ms. Judy Jacobson [A professor at the school of public health] to thank them for their insightful comments and very righteous decision not to allow the terrorist Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia university and desicrate the hallowed halls of academia.

Mr. Bollinger’s e-mail address is: bollinger@columbia.edu and Ms. Judy Jacobson’s is: jsj4@columbia.edu.

I would also like to request that everyone who does drop them a line to specifically call for the immediate removal of Ms. Lisa Anderson, the radical dean of Columbia’s school of international & public affairs, who “independently” decided to invite this monster to Columbia, from her position.

Our diligence in connecting with people who take a stand and join us in our fight against the tyranny of the Islamic Regime is important at this time.

Thank you.

Columbia Withdraws an Invitation to Ahmadinejad
By ELIANA JOHNSON - Staff Reporter of the Sun
September 22, 2006
http://www.nysun.com/article/40142

Overruling a prominent dean, the president of Columbia University , Lee Bollinger, yesterday withdrew an invitation to the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The dean of Columbia 's school of international and public affairs, Lisa Anderson, had independently invited Mr. Ahmadinejad to speak at the World Leader's Forum, a year-long program that aims to unite "renowned intellectuals and cultural icons from many nations to examine global challenges and explore cultural perspectives."

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, Mr. Bollinger said he canceled Mr. Ahmadinejad's invitation because he couldn't be certain it would "reflect the academic values that are the hallmark of a University event such as our World Leaders Forum." He told Ms. Anderson that Mr. Ahmadinejad could speak at the school of international and public affairs, just not as a part of the university-wide leader's forum.

Ms. Anderson's assistant cited an inability to arrange for proper security as the reason for the cancellation.

Mr. Bollinger told Ms. Anderson that while he finds Mr. Ahmadinejad's views "repugnant," she has the "right and responsibility to invite speakers whom she believes will add to the academic experience of our students."

The invitation sparked heated debate and outrage on campus and elsewhere because Mr. Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier and the head of a state that sponsors terrorism. The brouhaha over Mr. Ahmadenijad's invitation has also spotlighted the confusion of many regarding if and how standards should be applied when universities decide whom to welcome to their campuses.

A professor at the school of public health, Judy Jacobson, said Ms. Anderson "didn't see what line she was crossing." When asked to clarify the substance of that line, Ms. Jacobson paused. "Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier and inciter and I think that causes him to go far over the line," she said.

A Columbia sophomore who is a reporter for the Columbia Spectator, Mark Holden, said that while he personally does not like Mr. Ahmadinejad, he thought he should have a fair hearing. "It's a tough call,"Mr. Holden said."If given the choice to protest for him or against him I certainly would protest against him."

Ms. Jacobson, the leader of Columbia's chapter of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, a nonprofit group that aims to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism on college campuses, sent a letter to Mr. Bollinger attacking the university's standards on such invitations. The letter, signed by numerous professors from all parts of the university, states,"Neither academic freedom nor the First Amendment requires Columbia University to give a podium to academic freedom to anyone who wants it, let alone a Hitler wannabe who has actively suppressed academic freedom in his own country."

A Harvard professor of law, Alan Dershowitz, said universities must either declare that they will serve as open platforms or articulate clear standards regarding who is welcome to speak on their campuses.

"Bollinger should have said that anybody can speak at Columbia period, but he would never say that. This was an educational moment missed by the university to articulate what its standards are," Mr. Dershowitz said.

Former Iranian president to receive honorary degree

The University of St Andrews is to award an honorary degree to Iran's reformist former president Seyed Mohammad Khatami.
The university, which has awarded honorary degrees to the musician Bob Dylan, actors Michael Douglas, Helen Mirren and Joanna Lumley, and a number of international golfers, will present Mr Khatami with the title Doctor of Laws at a ceremony in St Andrews on October 31.

Mr Khatami, the president of Iran from 1997-2005, will deliver a lecture and also inaugurate the university's Institute for Iranian Studies.

Ali Ansari, reader in modern history and director of the institute, said the award recognised Mr Khatami's intellectual and practical work to improve relations between Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities.

Dr Ansari said the award also recognised Mr Khatami's academic work on Islamic philosophy and the west and "the clear international message he sends of dialogue between civilisations".

"In an otherwise tense international situation he does offer an alternative," said Dr Ansari.

The new institute will offer postgraduate courses from next September, said Dr Ansari. The university, which already offers respected courses in Middle Eastern studies, had some seed money available for the institute and was then offered 12,000 books by a wealthy Iranian donor, who wished to remain anonymous.

"Books were more of a temptation than money," said Dr Ansari. "On the basis of a resource like that we can set up a postgraduate course in Iranian studies."

The university has strong links with the United States and has a high proportion of US students attending. Dr Ansari said the institute aims to bring together Europeans, Americans and Iranians in one student body.

Dear Mr. Niall Scott;

I am the daughter of late Iranian scholar " Ali Akbar Saidi Sirjani". Sirjani was the author of more than 29 Literature and history books on Iran . www.saidisirjani.com in his open will, he has pointed out Mohammad Khatami as his murderer. After 1979, khatami was appointed as khomeini special agent at " Keyhan" newspaper. he established torturing intellectuals with his super power of running the only newspaper. then he became the head of " ershad" same as department of censorship.

Khatami banned my Fathers works. He burned down his books. When in March 1994, 28 armed Islamic republic guards entered our house asking the door to be opened cause you have mail! the house which my mother and I were all alone, the house which we were hold as hostages for 3 whole days, they took all my fathers hand written and ready to publish works: complete set of his works on Persian Vocabulary Dictionary; his tapes interviewing his best friends: Ali Dashti, Dr. Parviz Khanlari and Dr. Mozafar Baghaie Kermani; "Tarikh bidari Iranian", known as 2 volumes on constitution Revolution of Iran; along with any piece of paper with my late father hand writing on it.They took all his published and non published works, his notes and letters; 2 of unpublished books which was safe in his computer.

Sirjani's murder was announced as a death in prison: on November 1994. Then khatami became the president of Islamic republic. After he did his best in cutting strong roots of Iran 's culture and literature and any opposition against islamic republic.

Young generation, Iranian Student stood up against khatami. For sure you have seen the video of his last so called speech in Tehran University . The arrest and brutal killing of students happened during khatami's 8 years of being head of Islamic state.

Now your university [St. Andrews University] is ruining its reputation by inviting khatami. I am writing to you asking to CANCEL this invitation. khatami deserves nothing but a fair Tribunal dealing with Islamic republics crimes against Iranians .Arrest of khatami is the least UK has to do.

attached please find useful information related to mohammad khatami.

with best wishes;

Dear Sir Menzies Campbell,

Surly as scholar you must be aware that Mohammed was sterile therefore could not produce any children, with the result that the term SEYED which means descendants of Mohammed is false & forgery.
No body including your terrorist guest of honor Khatami could be SEYED.
That alone should create a doubt in your learned brain that to what kind a forger you are going to bestow Doctorate Degree!
The atrocities which took place under the so-called President ship of that false Seyed Khatami needs an encyclopedia by its own. But if you want to close your eyes for some worldly gain, of course it is your choice.
But you should also have in mind that by doing so you are tarnishing the reputation of you prestigious establishment.
I do not need to add any thing else.
With best wishes & regards,

Join Iranians in protesting St. Andrews University award to the criminal Khatami
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 13:24:39 -0400
Hello,

The revisionist faculty at St. Andrews University, rather than take the time to read the letter written by Sayeh Sirjani (bottom of the page) about her father’s murder at the hands of the criminal Mohammad Khatami, have dismissively written the directly below, pathetic form letter back to her. The denials of Khatami’s track record is not only unbelievable, it is downright brazen!

I took the time to phone Mr. Niall Scott, who has written this distasteful response. After explaining just a few facts about Mr. Khatami’s history, I also mentioned certain situations that occurred during Mr. Khatami’s recent unfortunate trip to the United States . Mr. Scott told me that he categorically disputes Mr. Khatami’s connection to Zahra Kazemi’s murder and he simply acted perfectly uninterested and indifferent to the facts surrounding the way Khatami quashed the 1999 university student uprising in Iran that basically betrayed all those who voted for him in the first place!

Mr. Scott’s letter and the attitude betrays his willful blindness to the truth and that Iranians are nothing but a treasanous lunatics who are simply looking to disrupt the life of a humble monk! By awarding Khatami with this award, St. Andrews University has shown contempt for documented history and the dark and painful reality of Iranian life under the boot of the Mullahs. They have fascistically and willfully turned a blind eye to their obligation to properly educate all those who attend their academic institution.

I urge one and all to write St. Andrews University at the following e-mail addresses and tell them to stop lying: principal@st-and.ac.uk; deputy principal@st-and.ac.uk; master@st-and.ac.uk; vpres@st-and.ac.uk; vpinfo@st-and.ac.uk; vpext@st-and.ac.uk; proffice@st-and.ac.uk; ns30@st-andrews.ac.uk

In the memory of brave Iranians who were killed and imprisoned during the reign of Khatami, I codemn the actions of St. Andrews University, as an affront to the depleted people of Iran and I invite Mr. Bob Dylan, Mr. Michael Douglas, Ms. Joanna Lumley, Ms. Helen Mirren and others who were previously bestowed with the award now earmarked for this shameless, to stand with us and those who pursue the light of a secular and enlightened society, to hold St. Andrews University accountable for such a thoughtless act.

Thank you.
Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi

Thank you for your email about former President Khatami’s visit to the University of St Andrews and our decision to award him an Honorary Doctorate. Please rest assured that the University does not take such decisions lightly and that the honour was conferred only after the widest consultation with experts in modern Iran , both in academia and beyond.

His Excellency Mohammad Khatami has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in both academe and politics. He served first as the Minister of Culture until 1992, when he resigned in protest at the pressures being brought to bear by a hard-line parliament, and again as President from 1997-2005. He was elected twice to the Presidency (1997 & 2001) in landslide election victories which saw him garner nearly 22 million votes on each occasion (his support coming mainly from the young, in particular students). Throughout his academic and political career, Mohammad Khatami enjoyed a reputation as a moderate cleric who sought dialogue and engagement with those of opposing views. He was and continues to be an enthusiastic proponent of Islamic democracy, human rights and civil society (he was the first president to found an office for the participation of women within the Presidency), while recognising that each society must develop within its own cultural framework.

During his first administration (1997-2001) he articulated his vision for a Dialogue of Civilisations, in contradistinction to the dominant discourse on the clash of civilisations, and persuaded the United Nations to adopt the theme for 2001. He was the first President to be invited on a series of State visits to a number of European countries including, France , Italy , and Germany . He has also been active in his relationship with the Vatican . He has since been invited to join the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s ‘ Alliance for Civilisations’ (one of only 18 members, and of two from the Middle East ). Over the last year, he has inaugurated a Foundation for the Dialogue of Civilisations, based in Geneva and Teheran, which he hopes will further understanding between Islam and other faiths. In the current climate of tension and confrontation, Mr Khatami’s approach offers a courageous and refreshing alternative.

It is above all for his work to encourage dialogue between faiths that the University of St Andrews has decided to award HE Mohammad Khatami an Honorary Doctorate.

Kind regards
Niall Scott

We just don't get it. The Left in America is screaming to high heaven that the mess we are in in Iraq and the war on terrorism has been caused by the right-wing and that George W. Bush, the so-called "dim-witted cowboy," has created the entire mess.

The truth is the entire nightmare can be traced back to the liberal democratic policies of the leftist Jimmy Carter, who created a firestorm that destabilized our greatest ally in the Muslim world, the shah of Iran, in favor of a religious fanatic, the ayatollah Khomeini.

Carter viewed Khomeini as more of a religious holy man in a grassroots revolution than a founding father of modern terrorism. Carter's ambassador to the UN, Andrew Young, said "Khomeini will eventually be hailed as a saint." Carter's Iranian ambassador, William Sullivan, said, "Khomeini is a Gandhi-like figure." Carter adviser James Bill proclaimed in a Newsweek interview on February 12, 1979 that Khomeini was not a mad mujahid, but a man of "impeccable integrity and honesty."

The shah was terrified of Carter. He told his personal confidant, "Who knows what sort of calamity he [Carter] may unleash on the world?"

Let's look at the results of Carter's misguided liberal policies: the Islamic Revolution in Iran; the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (Carter's response was to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympics); the birth of Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization; the Iran-Iraq War, which cost the lives of millions dead and wounded; and yes, the present war on terrorism and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

WHEN CARTER entered the political fray in 1976, America was still riding the liberal wave of anti-Vietnam War emotion. Carter asked for an in-depth report on Iran even before he assumed the reins of government and was persuaded that the shah was not fit to rule Iran. 1976 was a banner year for pacifism: Carter was elected president, Bill Clinton became attorney-general of Arkansas, and Albert Gore won a place in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

In his anti-war pacifism, Carter never got it that Khomeini, a cleric exiled to Najaf in Iraq from 1965-1978, was preparing Iran for revolution. Proclaiming "the West killed God and wants us to bury him," Khomeini's weapon of choice was not the sword but the media. Using tape cassettes smuggled by Iranian pilgrims returning from the holy city of Najaf, he fueled disdain for what he called gharbzadegi ("the plague of Western culture").

Carter pressured the shah to make what he termed human rights concessions by releasing political prisoners and relaxing press censorship. Khomeini could never have succeeded without Carter. The Islamic Revolution would have been stillborn.

Gen. Robert Huyser, Carter's military liaison to Iran, once told me in tears: "The president could have publicly condemned Khomeini and even kidnapped him and then bartered for an exchange with the [American Embassy] hostages, but the president was indignant. 'One cannot do that to a holy man,' he said."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has donned the mantle of Ayatollah Khomeini, taken up bin Laden's call, and is fostering an Islamic apocalyptic revolution in Iraq with the intent of taking over the Middle East and the world.

Jimmy Carter became the poster boy for the ideological revolution of the 1960s in the West, hell bent on killing the soul of America. The bottom line: Carter believed then and still does now is that evil really does not exist; people are basically good; America should embrace the perpetrators and castigate the victims.

IN THE '60S it was mass rebellion after the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. When humanity confronts eternity, the response is always rebellion or repentance. The same ideologues who fought to destroy the soul of America with the "God is dead" movement in the 1960s are now running the arts, the universities, the media, the State Department, Congress, and Senate, determined more then ever to kill the soul of America while the East attempts to kill the body. Carter's world view defines the core ideology of the Democratic Party.

What is going on in Iraq is no mystery to those of us who have had our fingers on the pulse of both Iran and Iraq for decades. The Iran-Iraq war was a war of ideologies. Saddam Hussein saw himself as an Arab leader who would defeat the non-Arab Persians. Khomeini saw it as an opportunity to export his Islamic Revolution across the borders to the Shi'ites in Iraq and then beyond to the Arab countries.

Throughout the war both leaders did everything possible to incite the inhabitants of each country to rebel - precisely what Iran is doing in Iraq today. Khomeini encouraged the Shi'ites across the border to remove Saddam from power and establish an Islamic republic like in Iran.

Carter's belief that every crisis can be resolved with diplomacy - and nothing but diplomacy - now permeates the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, Carter is wrong.

There are times when evil must be openly confronted and defeated.

KHOMEINI HAD the help of the PLO in Iran. They supplied weapons and terrorists to murder Iranians and incite mobs in the streets. No wonder Yasser Arafat was hailed as a friend of Khomeini after he seized control of Iran and was given the Israeli Embassy in Teheran with the PLO flag flying overhead.

The Carter administration scrambled to assure the new regime that the United States would maintain diplomatic ties with Iran. But on April 1, 1979 the greatest April Fools' joke of all time was played, as Khomeini proclaimed it the first day of the government of God.

In February 1979 Khomeini had boarded an Air France flight to return to Teheran with the blessing of Jimmy Carter. The moment he arrived, he proclaimed: "I will kick his teeth in" - referring to then prime minister Shapour Bakhtiar, who was left in power with a US pledge of support. He was assassinated in Paris by Iranian agents in 1991.

I sat in the home of Gen. Huyser, who told me the shah feared he would lose the country if he implemented Carter's polices. Carter had no desire to see the shah remain in power. He really believed that a cleric - whose Islamist fanaticism he did not understand in the least - would be better for human rights and Iran.

He could have changed history by condemning Khomeini and getting the support of our allies to keep him out of Iran.

Possible appeasers crime examples: support of détente. Its detractors—including Soviet dissidents—saw it as a euphemism for appeasement. In Iranian case the G8 Détente with Islamofascist regime in past 27 years for short term financial gains from Islamofascist regime corruptions.

Carter's Foreign Policy, a Gift That Keeps on Giving Iran & Terrorism

We just don't get it. The Left in America is screaming to high heaven that the mess we are in, in Iraq and the war on terrorism has been caused by the right-wing and that George W. MICHAEL D. EVANS, the Jerusalem Post - Jun. 20, 2007

President Jimmy Carter was elected as the 39th President of the United States during the time when the American people were confused and felt betrayed by President Nixon's Watergate scandal and the political failure of the Vietnam War. Carter did sound like a reasonable man at a time when America was in her darkest hour and people thought this man of moral conviction could lead them through their national nightmares. He narrowly defeated President Gerald Ford. But it all turned out to be a disaster for both the United States and the world as a whole.

Jimmy Carter was unsuccessful in doing what he promised to deliver and his lack of experience in foreign policy and national politics resulted in a disastrous political defeat for his party and himself in 1980. And for almost 12 years, the Democratic Party was forced to stay away from the White House since many didnt trust the Democrats to run the foreign policy of the US any more. Not until 1993 when Bill Clinton took over and ran the country for another eight years with more or less the same results. Democrats have shown that they are basically inexperienced in matters of foreign policy. When Jimmy Carter entered the political fray in 1976, America was still riding the liberal wave of anti-Vietnam War emotions and numerous mistakes made during the Nixon presidency.

It all became official when Jimmy Carter delivered his Inaugural Speech on 20th of Jan, 1977 and said: "Our moral sense dictates a clear-cut preference for these societies which share with us an abiding respect for individual human rights. We do not seek to intimidate, but it is clear that a world which others can dominate with impunity would be inhospitable to decency and a threat to the well being of all people."

Nonetheless his pro Human Rights campaign shocked the foundations of many American allies including the late Shah of Iran who was running an ancient country with cultural and historical complications that needed time to be corrected. Carter was unable to understand these issues. What happened in Iran in the late 70's and the resulting revolution/takeover of islamic extremists is a complex issue. It is a culmination of many variables including social, political, cultural, religious, economic and strategic, both domestically (Iran) and internationally (USA and European).

The late Shah of Iran was authoritarian, but not a tyrant. He was not an Idi Amin, Saddam, Pinochet or Khomeini and his thugs, absolutely not. He was a patriot and seen as one among many Iranians and a true one at that, for things he did to upgrade the lives of ordinary Iranians and modernizing the country he inherited. His secret police SAVAK was no worse than any other intelligence agency (including some current western ones) and corruption has never been unique to the Iranians and the cronies of the Shah's court. These social and mostly political problems were not genuine excuses for a revolution like that of Iran in 1978-79 period.

Indeed the late Shah of Iran made some notable mistakes and a few grave ones. In my opinion, he should have been more aware and in tune with the needs of his people rather than being so single minded in implementing his vision for a secular and modern Iran. I think, partly, it was a vision being implemented too quickly and not aligned with the cultural and social maturity of the Iranian population. His Majesty the late Shah of Iran once said that the single unifying point for Iran was "the King, the Monarch". That holds true but, equally, the other unifying point, certainly at that time for Iran, was "RELIGION" i.e. Shiite Islam. Perhaps, not among a few educated, westernized Iranians, but certainly for the majority of average people there. Progress is a great thing provided your average population mindset can keep up with it.

The Shah was weakened by President Carters human rights campaign. The Carter administration totally ignored the facts of the country they were dealing with. President Jimmy Carter was a weak man led by his liberal views and emotions. His mistakes were much graver than the Shah's .The main difference is that Carter's mistakes affected the world (as we witness now) more intensely than the Shah's. Carter's actions gave birth to what we call Islamic Fundamentalism. The alliance of the Reds (Communists) and Blacks (Islamists) contributed to the Shah's downfall. All emboldened by one single factor which was President Carter's absolute ignorance of the problems on the ground. His mishandling of the Iranian revolution and back-stabbing of the Persian monarch emoboldened the Soviets to invade Afghanistan.and also sent confusing signals to other US allies in the world. He should have known at the time that the soviets were intimately and actively involved, in getting rid of the Shah. It's hard to believe that he didn't know and not only allowed it to happen, but enabled it so that he could get rid of the Shah and replace him with this religious man, Khomeini.

The invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union in 1979 caused the US to rush to contain the threat of Communism in South and Central Asia again, therefore aided and directed by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan's intelligence services, the US had to fund the Mujahedeen for ten bloody years. These foreign fighters later, empowered by the defeat of the Soviet Union the evil empire- decided to bite the hand that fed them for the most part of the 1980s. The lack of resolve in handling of the Iranian revolution and the US Embassy Hostage Crisis gave the green lights to other Jihadist groups around the world that if US is attacked, it won't fight back. We saw the similar incidents happening through out the 1980s until 2001 - A few of them are the US Marines Barracks bombing by the Iranian backed Lebanese Hezballah in 1983, 1993 attack on WTC in New York City to attacks on the USS Cole in 2000 and finally the September 11th tragedy. The mistakes made during the 1979 still haunt us until today.

One of the many things Carter's administration was unable to comprehend was the fact that the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-1980 had almost nothing to do with the so-called 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mossadeq. The argument the Iranians made at the time was historically misguiding. Mossadeq was not elected by popular vote. Indeed he was appointed to run the cabinet by the Shah and when he was asked to step down, he refused. Therefore Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, had to have the military to remove the very man he had appointed to premiership a few years ago. Most importantly, due to oil embargo imposed on Mossadeq's government after his noble campaign to nationalize Iranian oil and ousting the British, he started getting closer to the Soviet Union and it made the US and especially UK - wounded by the nationlizing of oil in Iran - to scramble a coup against the rogue PM Mossadeq and restore the order in the most vital part of the middle-east.

This was the basic argument for the ayatollahs during the hostage crisis of 1979 and was the Iranians grievance, but the truth was that it only misguided the nave western audience including president Carter who didn't like the previous US foreign interventions around the world including those which were made by the Republican presidents. Iranian coup of 1953 had the backing of Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower and UK's Winston Churchill.

However, Khomeini by taking the US embassy staff as hostages and keeping them for 444 long days was up to an ugly game: Eradicating those who were secular and/or liberals that his regime didn't like, including Prime Minister Bazargan, Qotbzadeh and other nationalist and secular forces who once were his allies.and truly helped him in his quest to rise to power.

Mr. Carter couldn't understand that by playing the "Diplomacy Game" with the mullahs, he was paying a higher price for the US national and international interests. His diplomatic gesture were seen as signs of American weakeness and demise. And Islamic terrorists spiritually, and I'd say politically and financially, emboldened by the late ayatollah Khomeini's revolution learned the fact that they can hit the Great Satan and other western powers without the fear of backlash. No one is going to punish them for their wrong doings. The weakness of the United States through out Carter's presidency resulted in great tragedies.

Jimmy Carter's belief that every crisis can be resolved with diplomacy - and nothing but diplomacy - has had many catastrophic results. What we encounter today as Islamic Terrorism mostly backed by the current Iranian regime is one of the few gifts of the failed Carter's foreign policy. Had he shown resolve in dealing with the 1979 revolution and the US embassy hostage crisis, we would not be in this mess we are today. Diplomacy is a great tool to enforce your policies, if it is correctly backed by other tools of foreign policy including military might and economic incentive and disincentives. Jimmy Carter didn't apply these tools properly in order to handle many crises he faced during his 4 year presidency.

President Carter failed and his failure still haunts us.
