Outlawed Iranian opposition group ≥rents≤ demonstrators in New York; pro-monarchist groups call for Ahmadinejad arrest

New York, Sept 14, 2005 ≠ An outlawed Iranian opposition group, which obtained a permit from the New York Police Department to hold a demonstration in front of the United Nations today, attracted an estimated 2,500 supporters to protest the presence of Iranπs president at the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly.

But many of the crowd, coming from Denmark, Germany, Canada, Eritrea and Sudan, acknowledged that they had been recruited by the organization to attend the rally for money, and that all their expenses ≠ including international air fare, hotels, and a daily stipend - had been paid by the organization.

≥Basically, what you see is ≥rent-a-crowd,≤ said Kourosh Kalhour, spokesman for a pro-monarchist group, the Constitutionalist Movement of Iran, which held a rival demonstration nearby.

The Mujahedin-e Khalq, also known as the MEK, the MKO, was black-listed by the Department of State in 1994 as an international terrorist organization because its members had assassinated U.S. military officials in Iran in the 1970s.

[Photo: MEK ≥President≤ Maryam Rajavi, speaking to supporters in New York via a live satellite feed from Paris]

MEK hit squads also murdered U.S. employees of Rockwell and other defense contractors in the 1970s.

Condemned as a ≥Marxist Islamic≤ cult by the former Shah, the MEK played an active role in the 1979 revolution and supported the taking of U.S. hostages in Tehran. The organization today claims that those actions were not condoned by the current leaders of the organization, but were the actions of a splinter group.

In 1986, the group moved its headquarters from Paris to Baghdad, and attempted to launch an armed invasion of Iran in April 1988, backed by Saddam Hussein. In the 1990s, Saddam used MEK troops to attack opposition militias in the Kurdish safe haven of northern Iraq that today have joined the new Iraqi government.

A front organization, the National Council of the Iranian Resistance, has also been black-listed by the State Department. Speakers at todayπs event, which included a member of the Canadian parliament, demanded that the United States lift the terrorist designation of the group.

Many U.S. members of Congress have signed letters urging the State Department to remove the group from the terrorist list because they helped to expose the Iranian regimeπs secret nuclear programs.

While large numbers of Iranians enthusiastically waved portraits of MEK leaders Massoud and Miryam Rajavi, hundreds of non-Iranians stood out in the crowd.

Martin Peterson, 26, of Ringe, Denmark, said MEK representatives contacted him recently in his country and offered to fly him and members of his family to New York for the rally. ≥We thought it was a good cause to support,≤ he said.

[Photo: Martin Petersson (right), 26, of Ringe, Denmark, says and 70 other Danes were flown to New York for six days, at MEK expense. Other groups from Germany and France were also flown in for the rally at MEK expense.]

Peterson said he flew over from Denmark all expenses paid with a group of 70 Danes, and that similar groups had been recruited in Germany and France.

The MEK flew a group of 25 Africans from Sudan and Eritrea to New York from their homes in Ottowa, Canada,

Elizabeth Val, 35, flew down from Ottowa along with her three children, thanks to MEK recruiters. ≥We want to tell the UN that the same violations of human rights we see in Iran are happening in Darfur≤ region of southern Sudan. ≥We have come to protest human rights violations.≤

Traveling with her was Sumia Ibrahim, 40, and Abeba Suleiman, 40 both originally of Eritrea. Both women brought children along, on MEK-paid tickets.

Pro-monarchist Iranians demonstrating nearby said a group of 21 MEK-protestors had flown with them overnight from Los Angeles, and talked openly of how they had been recruited by the MEK for the rally.

Rival demonstrations of U.S.-based Iranian exile groups gathered an estimated 800 people outside the UN. Some came in buses from Washington, DC, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Others flew in on a group charter from Los Angeles, with each person paying their own way.

≥We worked very hard to bring together people who normally donπt talk to each other,≤ said Roozbeh Farahanipour, secretary general of Iranians for a Secular Republic (Marzepor Gohar). Farahanipour was a key leader in the July 1999 student uprising in Tehran and fled to the United States two years later.

While not a monarchist, Farahanipour said he felt it was important for Iranian opposition groups who supported non-violent regime change to work together.

≥That is the important thing,≤ said Zia Atabay, a prominent broadcaster who founded National Iranian TV in Los Angeles. ≥Here we have all these groups together, even if normally they donπt talk.≤

Several speakers called for the United States to prevent Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from holding lobbying sessions with pro-regime groups during his stay in new York.

Others called on the U.S. to arrest him on terrorism charges, stemming from his involvement in the 1979-1981 hostage crisis and his role in the murder of Iranian dissidents in Vienna, Austria and elsewhere.

[FDI Executive Director Kenneth R. Timmerman called on NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly to send home Islamic Republic president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad]

Non-monarchist groups held a separate rally earlier in the day that included leaders of Marzepor Gohar, Iran Society, SOS Iran, Alliance of Iranians (Texas), National Iranian Congress, Social Democrats, Iranian Council, Iran of Tomorrow, the Pan-Iran party, and the Student Movement Coordinating Committee for a Democratic Iran (SMCCDI). Members of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran protested separately.

I believe those Iranians & others that think just because MKO has changed its name to NCRI, they have changed their strange islamo/commi ideology, or just because one or two of them have been able to give out information regarding Iran’s nuke, they may have given up on their cultish behavior, and should be taken seriously and be part of the main stream opposition groups. Let’s not be fooled again, and give an Islamic fascist that also embraces communism any credence. Let’s try to expose this group to young Iranians within the country, for what they really are, so they won’t be fooled again.
The group originated from the dead Hezbeh-tudeh with more islamic followers, so they combined the two greatest evil on this earth, islam and communism, and came up with evil2 or MKO/NCRI Their two leaders (Rajavis) are as corrupt and deceitful as the rag-heads, with the addition of the communism. There was a great article about 2 years ago in the WSJ explaining their strange cult like principles. Maryam has been married twice and Massoud I think 3 times, but their comrades in the camp are not allowed to marry or have any sexual attractions toward the opposite sex, because it will divert their concentration from their goal, which is fighting their enemies.
What this group has learned very well from Hezbollah and Hamas, is how to get their followers to give financial aid to their organization and “cause”. A friend of mine used to know a Dr. follower (shows education does not guarantee wisdom and common sense) who use to pay between $500.00 – $1000.00 a month to the new NCRI. What I can say is that, they are very well financed. That is how they were able to “buy crowds” “hire people” to come from all over the world expense paid, to participate in “their rally”. Very similar to the rag-heads’ tactics, that pays people to participate in demonstrations to play up to a naïve and dumb outside media; and to buy votes etc.etc. Why do MKO’s have to resort to fraudulent means to achieve their goal? it is simple they know well about their reputation, and being unpopular, by hiring crowds they think it will give them legitimacy and will make them look like main stream opposition; which is far from it, by this action they are more discredited than ever. I was told unlike other opposition groups, they would not allow their people to mix with others. In addition, Iranians will never forgive a group of people that made a pack with their enemy Sadam, and attacked their own country and their Kurdish compatriot. They are considered nothing but traitors. I consider Rajavis more dangerous than the rag-heads.
Their priority is:
1-Rajavis to come to power--which means more corruption than ever.
2- Imposing non-Iranian values such as Communism/Islam, by intimidation and terror. Imposing their strange cult on Iranians.
3-Iran and Iranian values are last on their list.

To all patriotic Iranians beware of NCRI they are the same terrorist group as MKO not a mainstream opposition group. Their leaders should never be allowed to have a voice in the future of Iran.

If you look at the original link with Maryam's picture and her red scarf, it tells it all: scarf, to show her allegiance to islam, and "red", her allegiance to communism. Where is her allegiance to Iran & Iranian people??
It is like jumping from frying pan into fire, going from rag-heads to red rag-heads.

An article regarding NCRI (National Council of Resitance of Iran) the new and improved name of MKO.

After being occupied by the Islamic Regime (IRI) for the past 27 years, at the very least the average Iranian has learned that Mullahs belong in the mosques and not in politics. It is difficult to understand why a so called “secular” opposition group such as the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR) has brought a mullah and formed a committee to preach about non-fundamentalist Islam. Probably the solution that this group has in mind is to replace the fundamental regime with a more moderate version of Islam. The policy makers of this group who have and will not hesitate to sell every inch of Iranian soil to gain political power is now offering a new and supposedly remodelled Islam.

Ayatollah Jalal Gangei, who is the Chair of the Religious Tolerance Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, pointed out in a conference on Oct. 5th that fundamentalist Islam used by IRI is dangerous to peace and security in the world. He also stated that “true nature” of Islam could help the world to establish peace in the region. This speech resembled one of the earlier speeches by the Mullahs during the revolution.

NCR leadership has not changed during the past two decades and the group members continue to wear Islamic hijab and yet the group continues to insist on their secular and democratic policies. NCR’s leaders have been in power almost as long as the leaders of IRI, without any significant change to top officials in the group and they still claim to be a democratic group. Also wearing of hijab, following Islamic policies and promoting a “modern Islam” is anything but secular, yet they insist that they are a secular group. The group’s actions and policies seem to be full of contradiction if not hypocrisy.

There is no doubt that during the reign of the late Shah’s regime and due to his religious beliefs, people were not educated as they should have been with regard to Islam. Also under the current occupying regime even more religious dogma has been introduced and forced upon the people. Hence, the majority of the Iranians consider themselves Moslems without having a clear understanding of the matter. Well aware of this fact, NCR’s domestic plan is banking on a joy ride on this religious wave. But, when the time comes, their Islamic ideology will force a religious filter on their vision and they will miscalculate, again. The fact remains that the majority of Iranians, whether religious or not, have had enough of a non-secular state and will seek and use the opportunity to establish a secular state with total separation of religion and state.

NCR is offering in their foreign plan an alternative Islam to the International Community, who have seemed to enjoy the current Islamic state for a along time and probably won’t mind a moderate Islamic state where the sweet business deals can remain in place, and new and even more lucrative deals can be made. NCR’s action is in total disregard to the short-term and long-term Iranian national interests in exchange for political power on shaky grounds at best.

What Iranians need today is to have such opposition that leads the way for a secular and modern Iran. A future Iran where religious dogma, whether moderate or fanatical, is replaced with common sense; where Iranians of all faiths practice their religions freely without infringing on the others’ rights; where separation of church and state is a pillar of the government; where science is taught in schools and religion in mosques, churches, synagogues and temples.

In a glance at Iranian refugees around the world who have had to flee the IRI and joined the free world for freedom and equal opportunities, the measure of success is obvious in various fields. This indicates that Iranians are capable of great things when there are opportunities available.
Opposition groups and intellectuals should plant the seeds of a modern future where our children won’t have to repeat the same mistakes; that requires lessons learned from our past to guide our present actions.

To gain political power and advocate a pre-arranged ideology at the cost of national interests and to endanger the future of Iran is precisely mimicking the current regime’s performance.
The only ones who should be pleased by their performance are the Iranian people: they are the ones who are going to make the final decision for Iran’s future.

IRAQI KURDS WANT IRANIAN OPPOSITION LEADER TRIED. *

http://www.rferl.org/reports/iran-report/

Iraqi Kurds want Masud Rajavi, leader of an Iranian opposition organization based in Iraq, to be arrested and tried, Radio Farda reported on 20 October. Rajavi's group, the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MEK), settled in Iraq in the 1980s, where it received assistance from and cooperated with former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The Kurds say they want Rajavi to be tried because of the role his organization played in their repression by the Hussein regime.
Mohammad Tofiq Rahim, an official with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, said in an interview with Radio Farda that his organization has documentary evidence of Rajavi's role. He said that when the Kurds seized control of northern parts of Iraq with U.S. assistance at the end of the Gulf War in 1991, the MEK cooperated with the Iraqi Army in retaking control of the city of Kirkuk. In the process, he charged, hundreds of the city's residents were killed by the MEK.

"Everyone in Iraqi Kurdistan knows that Masud Rajavi cooperated with the Mukhaberat [intelligence] and security forces of Saddam Hussein not only in the suppression of the Kurds, but all the opponents of the regime of Saddam," Rahim added. (Bill Samii)
