Fresh clashes in the northwestern City of Sannandaj

Scattered clashes took place, today, in the northwestern City of Sannandaj located in the Iranian province of Kurdistan. Groups of demonstrators retaliated to the brutal attack of regime's militiamen by using pieces of stones and incendiary devices.

Tens of residents had resumed their peaceful protest action in front of the Governor's office when militiamen started the attack with clubs and tear gas.

Slogans, such as, "Marg bar Jomhoori e Eslami" (Down with Islamic Republic), "Marg Bar Estebdad" (Down with dictatorship), "Rahbar boro Gom Sho" (Supreme Leader Get Lost), "Iran Azad, Azad Iran" (Iran Free, Free Iran) were shouted by demonstrators in the local Kurdish and in Persian languages.

Most areas of the city, such as, Enghelab, Azadi ('Freedom'), Khomeini and Ferdowsi were affected by the unrest.

Tens of have been reported as injured or arrested by special forces sent from cities, such as, Hamedan, Saghez, Kermanshah and Mahabad.

Other northwestern cities, such as, Marivan, Baneh, Mian-Do-Ab, Marivan, Oshnovieh have been, for the last two weeks, the daily scenes of riots and expression of exasperation against an unpopular regime notorious for Human Rights abuses. Demonstrations leading to scattered clashes have been taking place following the publication of the mutilated body of a killed young activist who was arrested on July 9th.

Several demonstrators and security agents have been killed so far and tens of public buildings have been damaged.

It's to note that more and more of region's residents are resorting to protest following President Bush's wise statement on the "need of respecting the territorial integrity of Iran". Till then, most residents of the Iranian provinces of Kurdistan and W. Azarbaijan were fearing to become indirect tools in service of few independentist groups who are targeting to split them from Iran.

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 02 – Iran’s State Security Forces on Monday evening opened fire at a peaceful anti-government demonstration in the Kurdish town of Sanandaj, northwest Iran, killing several people including two children and starting riots throughout the town, eye-witnesses reported.

At least 1,000 people had gathered at Esteghlal Park in the evening, peacefully demonstrating in protest to the brutal torture and murder of a young Kurd by police in the neighbouring town of Mahabad which had acted as a catalyst for widespread anti-government protests in Kurdistan and Western Azerbaijan provinces for the past three weeks.

Protestors held up placards demanding justice for the killers of Shoan Qaderi. There were also chants against senior officials within Iran’s theocratic leadership.

Uniformed and plain-clothed police attacked protestors in Enghelab Square and Sheshom-e Bahman Street and at one point started to shoot live rounds. Eye-witnesses reported that several people were injured or killed. Among the dead are believed to be two children.

As demonstrators dispersed, a full-scale riot broke out in Sanandaj. People threw stones to fight off police and burnt car tyres in the streets. Local banks were attacked and had their windows shattered.

Several sonic-booms were also set off in between protestors.

There is presently no accurate information on the number of people arrested, though witnesses reported heavy police presence in the town. Anti-riot units were also brought in from neighbouring towns to quell the protests.

At least 4 demonstrators and members of the security forces were killed in the violent clashes that rocked, yesterday, the northwestern City of Sannandaj.

The riots started as the Islamic regime forces attacked peaceful demonstrators in the Independence Park and in front of the Governor's Office. Soon, the protest action lead to scattered riots affecting other areas of the city, such as, Enghelab, Azadi ('Freedom'), Khomeini and Ferdowsi.

Tens of public buildings and security patrol cars were set ablaze or heavily damaged by the demonstrators who were shouting slogans against the regime and its leadership, such as, , "Marg bar Jomhoori e Eslami" (Down with Islamic Republic), "Marg Bar Estebdad" (Down with dictatorship), "Rahbar boro Gom Sho" (Supreme Leader Get Lost), "Iran Azad, Azad Iran" (Iran Free, Free Iran) were shouted by demonstrators in the local Kurdish and in Persian languages.

Noise of shoot out and tear gas explosion continued till late night.

Several security agents were disarmed by residents in ambushes created in narrow streets. Female demonstrators were forcing the agents to follow them into streets were masked armed opponents were disarming the militiamen.

The situation inSannandaj is very tense and more unrest is expected to take place.
