U.S. demands release of Iranian journalist

WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Wednesday demanded Iran release Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji, saying he was imprisoned because of his political views and that it was increasingly worried about his health.
International human rights groups two weeks ago urged Iran to release all political prisoners, including Ganji, whom they said was being denied medical care in Iran's Evin prison.
Ganji is a journalist detained in 2000 for linking officials to political murders and later sentenced to six years in prison. He was allowed to leave prison on May 30 for medical care, but was back behind bars on June 10 before he could get treatment for asthma and back pains, the groups said.
"We are increasingly concerned about Mr. Ganji's health and the conditions of his detention," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in a written statement calling for Ganji to be released without conditions and to receive medical care.
"Mr. Ganji's courageous efforts to investigate extra-judicial killings by Iranian security forces and his commitment to free speech and democratic government have earned him the respect of many around the world," McCormack added.
He said Ganji was jailed because of "his political views and peaceful activities" and Washington was "alarmed by recent reports that Mr. Ganji's health has been failing and that he has been denied access to family and legal representation."
Rights groups, joined by Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, two weeks ago said the judiciary had overruled a request from prison authorities for Ganji and another government critic, Nasser Zarafshan, to get medical treatment.
"Ganji is in prison just for peacefully criticizing the authorities," Ebadi, who is Ganji's lawyer, said in a joint statement with the rights groups. "His mistreatment in prison is a serious violation of fundamental human rights standards." |

LONDON, July 2 (IranMania) - Wife of jailed journalist, Akbar Ganji, said her husband has been weakened by his continued hunger strike.
Massoumeh Shafie told ISNA that after meeting Ganji for an hour she realized that Ganji had become very weak due to the hunger strike.
“Although my husband is not held incommunicado anymore and he has been transferred to the prison’s general ward, he is still on hunger strike and weighs only 58 kilos,“ she said.
Shafie also noted that Ganji’s breathing problems have intensified and was taken outside the prison for treatment. |

Ganji warns of his coming death and Khamenei's responsibility.
http://regimechangeiran.blogspot.com/2005/07/ganji-warns-of-his-coming-death.html
Iranian blogger, Windsteed, Iran Hopes 2005 http://iran-votes-2005.blogspot.com/2005/07/mr.html:
Mr. Akbar Ganji, a dissident journalist, writer and politican activist who has spent over 62 months in the Islamic Republic prison for publishing his anti-regime opinions, has written a letter to the outside world to let everyone know if he dies in prison, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be directly responsible for his death. Ganji who has been on hunger strike since last month says that "Hejazi" from the office of the Leader delivers Khamenei's orders to Mortazavi, Tehran's chief prosecutor, on how Ganji should be treated.
I just wonder what has happened to us Iranians. Why don't we do anything for Ganji? What has happened to us? Isn't Ganji and his situation more important to us than a sport victory for which poured onto the streests to show, not only our joy, but also our power? Can't we use this power to support Ganji? Can't we just march on, I don't know, Enghelab avenue to show that we care about Ganji? Doesn't Ganji need our support? If it were not because of us, for our freedom, Ganji would not have been jailed. He put his life in danger, he sacrificed his freedom to open our eyes to the truth. This brave man revealed to us what was going on behind the curtains, he told us how the 'holy men' ordered our fellow Iranians to be butchered only because of their opinions. We have no hope in the international human rights bodies. They are useless. But can't we do something to at least show that we care about Ganji? Is this the way we treat freedom fighters?! |
